South Korean film studio N.E.W. reports that period thriller “The Night Owl” has been licensed for remake in China.
It claims that its deal is the highest price ever paid for rights to remake Korean IP in China, but it declined to disclose either the value of the deal or the identity of the buyer.
South Korea and China maintain frosty diplomatic relations and, despite Korean content being hugely popular worldwide, film industry relations have been frozen as a consequence. No Korean film has had a theatrical release in China for nearly a decade.
But remakes are a way around the problem. Chinese companies have adopted the practice of licensing and remaking Korean films and TV shows in order to play down the origins of the story and to be able to legitimately claim that their titles now have Chinese nationality.

Madrid-based Rock & Ruz – the production company of Netflix’s “Nowhere,” which has just been confirmed by Netflix as its most-viewed Spanish-language movie of all time – has pacted new projects with Italy’s Leonardo Fasoli, a head-writer of “Gomorrah” and creator of “ZeroZeroZero,” and Spain-based Alejandro Hernández, a co-writer on Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and “La Fortuna.”
Targeting the key to high-end fiction success in Europe – its screenwriters – and added to “Nowhere” and an upcoming Spanish-Mexican remake of hit Korean movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7” – the freshly-announced projects mark out Rock & Ruz as a new and significant Spain-based international player.
As international markets – both theatrical and global streamers – are asking for bigger films with identifiable audiences, Rock & Ruz’s bold slate looks like a ready source of titles.

Disney appears to be having a Squid Game moment.
The star-studded Korean spy series Moving has become Disney+ and Hulu’s most-watched K-drama ever — in the U.S. and globally — within just seven days of release. The show launched on Disney’s streaming services on Aug. 9 and has become the company’s most popular series in any language, based on hours streamed, across the Asia Pacific region, including in Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. That means viewers in Asia have already watched Moving more than Disney’s core franchise series like The Mandalorian. (Disney declined to share more precise viewership data.)
“The global consumer response towards the first 11 episodes of Moving has exceeded our expectations,” said Carol Choi, Disney’s executive vp of original content strategy in Apac. “From the U.S. to all across Apac, it is fast becoming a breakout hit with its captivating storyline,...

Producer and broadcaster Jtbc has such a strong track record of making attractive and successful Korean TV drama series from tales of everyday lives that almost everything it does is likely to attract attention. Adding the presence of Son Ye-jin, star of Studio Dragon and Netflix hit “Crash Landing on You,” makes “Thirty-Nine” potentially one of the hottest Korean series of 2022.
The title is a reference to the age of three female friends who are only just the right side of forty. The 12-part romantic drama depicts them juggling life, work and relationships as they approach mid-life.
Son, who had the starring role in early 2000s blockbuster films “The Classic” and “April Snow” but in recent years has focused more on TV, plays the head of a dermatology clinic in Seoul’s affluent Gangnam district. She is joined by co-stars Jeon Mi Do (tvN’s “Hospital Playlist”) as a drama...

Hit Korean movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7” is set for a Spanish-language remake following a deal between sales agent Contents Panda and production company Rock and Ruz.
The 2013 original film told the fact-based tale of a man with intellectual disabilities who was wrongly jailed on theft charges. While in jail he struggles to prove his innocence, but befriends other prisoners who smuggle in his daughter to share their cell.
The film grossed $80 million on release in Korean theaters and has been successfully remade in Turkey, The Philippines, Indonesia and in Kannada for the Indian market. International rights are handled by Contents Panda, an affiliate of “Train to Busan” studio Next Entertainment World, and indie sales firm Finecut.

Hideki Matsuyama made history on Sunday, becoming the first Japanese man to win one of golf’s four majors. His victory at The Masters handed CBS the most viewers last night. Due to the nature of live sports, the below fast-national Nielsen numbers for CBS should be considered subject to upward adjustment. In other words, while CBS and ABC appear to currently be tied for first place among adults 18-49, it is very likely CBS will adjust up (and away from ABC in the demo) when final figures become available. For now, we’ll report what we’ve got. Also of note last night, Telemundo finished third in ratings, mostly thanks to airing the movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7.” The previous Sunday was Easter, which had some pretty low TV-viewing levels. Turkey’s Oscar entry “Miracle in Cell No. 7” made waves in the country when it first debuted, just as the South Korean film of the same name, from which it was adapted, did in 2013. Turns out, the Korean filmmakers embraced the adaptation with open arms.
“When I first watched the South Korean version, I also thought about my childhood, my father and my family,” producer Saner Ayar said during TheWrap’s International Screening Series. “And in fact, my outstanding issues with my father and everyone actually questioned their parenting skills. They thought about how they could be a better parent. There was sort of this enlightenment that everyone felt. So when we were actually making this movie, what we wanted was that when actually people watched it in the theater, they would not want to go to a dinner with their spouses, but instead they would want to run...

Principal photography began on Monday in Glasgow, Scotland, on “Blind,” a Bollywood remake of the eponymous 2011 Korean action thriller.
Sonam Kapoor (“Veere Di Wedding”) headlines the cast, which also includes Purab Kohli (“Sense8”) and Vinay Pathak (“A Suitable Boy”).
“Blind” follows a woman who loses her sight after a car accident, only to find her other senses develop, allowing her to help the police in an ongoing investigation.
The remake is directed by feature debutant Shome Makhija, who has previously worked with filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh (“Kahaani”) as associate director on a number of films, including the Glasgow-set “Badla,” a remake of 2016 Spanish-language thriller “The Invisible Guest,” starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu.

“Good Neighbour” is a project worth looking out for two big reasons. One: it is the return of actor Oh Dal-su. The once much-loved actor fell sharply from grace when his name came up in the early days of the #metoo movement in Korea. All projects featuring the actor had since been shelved or dropped, including this one. However, the court cleared him of all wrongdoings last year and fans have been looking forward to his comeback to the big screen. The second reason “Good Neighbour” should jump up everybody’s anticipated films list is that it is also the return of director Lee Hwan-kyung, whose last film seven years ago was the smash-hit and still highly popular “Miracle in Cell No. 7”. Excited now? I bet you are!
