I tried, It Just Isn't That Funny
openwaters-17 January 2020
I felt like she went into little dramatic thinking she was cute or affable but it didn't land for me. It seemed that she was playing to the small crowd there that is really into her versus a wider stage that this format is intended for. I think she has the goods as an actor but doesn't know how to play to a medium that's bigger than the room she was in there just yet as a comedian.

So so so so disappointing
sclafunk10 January 2020
I think she needs Abby. Broad city is pretty great, but based on this. I don't think Ilana has been doing standup very long. She has charisma but the writing is super weak. She should Stick to surreal absurdist type stuff it's def her strong point. I get it, discrimination sucks, and there are hateful people in the world. I'm so tired of hearing about the same 5 woke topics, beyond that, at this point it's simply lazy and over safe. I can't wait for the first comic or writer to evolve us past this pretend to be woke to appease/entertain/ market to a bunch of people who pretend to hate capitalism.

Woke, Tired and Ageist
Roundcat14 January 2020
There's no jokes. She just talks about how she hopes anyone born in the 70s would die soon and how she is failing to cope with the real world. All the audience worship her as she talks about herself in the third person. It's embarrassingly lacking of talent and the bigotry is right at the fore. Really disappointing.

More like An evening with Ilana Glazer
jwassdesign7 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I would consider this "an evening with Ilana Glazer" not necessarily stand-up. I absolutely hate to criticize her. Some of it feels super scripted. When I was in another room it sounded like a reading. Her physical humor really works in her favor and she does it well. I hope if she wants to be a stand up comedian she continues to work mics and gives us more authenticity. This was a bit of a snooze. Trying to fill time is what it was feeling like. Idk, maybe skip it. But maybe not? There are some good lil bits in there. It's just the audience wasn't totally feeling it either and it made it rough.

Lastly, *SPOILER* she was wrong about something, you totally CAN suck underwater.

Pretty bad

Sorry to be negative here. I'm a huge Broad City fan and lover of standup comedy but this is downright cringeworthy. Hard to watch.

Broad city, hilarious. This special? Nope
jaceburgess11 January 2020
Had high hopes because broad city is so good. But I could only watch about 10 minutes of Ilana's standup. I'd never seen her as a standup before and after watching this I'm not sure if she's spent much time doing it.

Embarrassing
tragic-946194 January 2020
I loved "Broad City" so I had high hopes for this. I couldn't get past 5 minutes because it was so cringe worthy I felt bad for her. This is really really bad. If you like watching people bomb at stand up, this is your gig.

Amazon trying to be Netflix
Brad_G353 January 2020
Netflix has hit the jackpot for stand-up comedy over the past few years. This is an attempt by Amazon to get in on the game.

I love Ilana. I loved Broad City. I love most of her Youtube stuff. If you already know Ilana, you'll watch this and enjoy yourself in some way. If you don't know her, this could be the longest hour of your life.

There are funny haha moments and Ilana can tell a story. The low score for this comes mainly from the production. Someone should've really controlled the encouraging hecklers from all the people in the crowd... you know... those people that loudly keep agreeing with the comic or make weird comments during the silent moments. Those people that find the humor much funnier than you and they want you to know it. If you've been to any kind of comedy show, you know these super annoying people. I think it's bizarre that this special is filled with that.

There are much worse stand up specials out there for sure. At least Ilana doesn't make her jokes cheesy when they don't land. Most comics want to dwell on the things that don't work. Not Ilana. She keeps things moving.

If you love her in Broad City...
manicpixel7 January 2020
Then don't ruin your memories of how hilarious she is in that by avoiding this "stand up comedy" special. I watch a lot of stand up and thus barely qualified as that. She's trying really really hard to act aloof but the heavy handed SJW vibe and cringe worthy quips barely register with her obviously excited venue audience thus on TV it comes off flatter than unleavened bread. If you want to watch it consider yourself warned.

Wonderful, relatable and hilarious
shamblerbatman5 January 2020
I adored this. I haven't found many recent comedy specials which I've enjoyed as I often find that comedy pushes women toward crude, lazy comedy in the way so many men traditionally write... But I really liked this special. I related to so much of what she said, and I finished the special thinking "that was relaxing and chill" . I think it starts stronger than it ends, but I still enjoyed it and look forward to more.

First times are hard
emailemily30008 April 2021
I like Ilana Glazer. This, her FIRST special, wasn't that funny. I think I only laughed once. But I wasn't rolling my eyes the whole time either - if you like Ilana Glazer, it's pleasant to watch. No worse than chatting with a friend. Ilana Glazer is likeable and charismatic and I really think she could get better at this with more tries. She has something for sure, but she's getting a special on a global streaming platform for her first big performance/first time getting back on the horse. She's successful, so that was an option for her. It's like George Harrison said about learning in public (ie. That he did that).

I hope she perfects this craft, if she's passionate about it. I don't think anything will hold her back. She's making the right observations, just like Broad City, and she's a good performer - the writing and structure of it is just not there yet. There were moments where I thought "wait, was that the punchline?" and others that were a little better. I even think the material was pretty strong at times, it just could've been written better. Kids being forced to reenact the holocaust by teachers sounds like gold. It's confusing and questionable and and maybe sadistic and maybe the kids found it fun because it's not a sit-down lesson, so the teachers had to take it up a notch trying to scare them (but within the context of a school) until it got to be something weird and completely different from the holocaust etc. IG just didn't do much with it. Maybe she's just not familiar with the medium yet, maybe she should have spent more time on less gags. There was some good material here, just a little wasted.

At best, this is like a fun school assembly. At worst, you'll grumble about how "woke" it is and use that as a reason for it not being very funny. (Don't do that. Even if you don't agree with Ilana Glazer's outlook, she didn't say anything offensive. Don't even bother complaining about that or how it offended you. How much actual (and acclaimed) offensive comedy have women and minorities had to put up with throughout time? Complain that it's not funny, not that it's "too woke". And if you feel annoyance and frustration at inoffensive yet progressive comments and you find that this distresses you, that's on you, not the speaker. Maybe think about what you heard instead of reacting so primally. Preachiness is another thing, but this wasn't preachy. Sometimes people hear preaching when they hear mildly liberal opinions they haven't heard before, but it's likely just their conscience telling them they've been wrong all this time.)

If "woke" comedy exists, and I see no reason why it shouldn't - if we're still having to call uncontroversial comments like "the patriarchy exists" "woke" - then Ilana Glazer might find it. If you have never heard of Ilana Glazer, watch broad city. If you've never heard of Ilana Glazer and you don't want to watch broad city, don't watch this special. If you watched broad city and you liked it, might as well watch this special. If you watched broad city and you didn't like it, wtf are you sure? Go watch it again.

It Isn't Funny--Very Disappointing
ThomasPaineGuy11 January 2020
I don't understand why this was so bad. I like Broad City--that's why I checked out the video in the first place. I saw the poor ratings and thought they couldn't be right because Ilana is hilarious. Wow was I wrong. Bad jokes, grim political ideology, this is literally the most unfunny thing I have ever seen.STAY AWAY.

I feel bad for hating this so much
GMFreeek10 September 2020
I'm a HUGE Broad City & Ilana fan, but this...this was PAINFUL. Every two minutes I checked to see how much longer it had to go. I was hanging out for it to finish, it was that bad. I didn't laugh or smile once. Some of the content was just soooooo drawn out, particularly the Nazi fashion section. I'm a HUGE lefty so I though the content was gonna be right up my alley. I had a hard time connecting with it though. I'm all for left wing politics, but not when you have to tear others down to prove a point. Most of the time I was wondering why the audience was laughing? I wouldn't call this a comedy special, I watch a lot of comedy & this wasn't it. This was more like listening to her talk, incessantly for an hour, with no punch line. The sad thing is it's tarnished my opinion of Ilana, she's not as shiny as she once was for me & that's sad :(

Keep those cyanide capsules handy
gmaileatsyourlunch9 January 2020
I give this one star because it's technical aspects are at least competent.

There's so much wrong here it's hard to wrap my head around it. Nothing works. Her timing is terrible. Her setups are terrible. It's not insightful. Her jokes pander to the absolute lowest, laziest rung of radically left, millennial woke culture, with punchlines like "cause that's what a typical MAN would do, right?" Even her intro looks absurd and ridiculous unless you're already on her hype train.

It isn't that progressive gender topics are off-limits for comedy. Joan Rivers did that as far back as the mid-1960s. It's that there's almost zero evidence of the craft of comedy to be found. She's not turning a contentious talking point on its ear and making us see it in a different way via her humor. She's not poking fun in a witty way. She's not challenging the audience by illuminating why their stereotypes might be flawed or ridiculous. All she's doing is trotting out these stereotypes one after another and taking unfunny cheap shots at them to get predictable affirmation from a crowd that either thinks exactly like her or is being coached. Or plied with lots of booze. Likely all three.

It's the equivalent of a group of middle school bullies surrounding one kid and saying "His face is funny, right? What a stupid, funny face this kid has, right?" And all the other bullies start laughing hysterically. "You're right! His face is so funny and stupid. You nailed it! You're hilarious! You should be a comedian." It's zero comedy and one hundred percent appeal to her tribe to agree that somehow what's coming out of her mouth is funny.

It's not my first rodeo with this kind of thing. Go to any open mic or thrown together comedy event and you'll have to suffer through a few acts that still haven't figured out that being angry and ranting doesn't make you a comedian. But what defies imagination in this case and utterly blows my mind is that Amazon took one of those people and pointed a camera at them for over an hour...and then PUBLISHED IT. And as of this writing on 1/9, it's been out nearly a week and it's still being pushed at the top of the Amazon Prime page. I assumed they'd be furiously burying this or or encasing it in concrete and evacuating everyone for hundreds of miles like Chernobyl.

But whatever. Unless you want to see the most toxic, humanity-destroying corner of supposedly woke, progressive culture set to what feels like a laugh track, avoid this.

It felt like an episode of broad city......
takostar6719 January 2020
By that I mean, it feels like Ilana didn't know what to do with her life and so she tries stand up comedy and fails miserably.

I didn't found it funny
nudistphoneguy4 January 2020
I was looking forward for this special since I have seen Ilana in movies and TV series where she is very funny. Maybe some other viewers can find it funny, I did not. I follow stand up comedy and I am pretty open minded to every material but coul not finish the special. If you found it funny, more power to you.

Bitter and not funny
aleeward19 January 2020
After 5 minutes I could slowly feel my loving memories of Broad City disappear.

Even the small crowd, who obviously adore her, find it difficult to muster a giggle at her poorly constructed gags. There's nothing funny at the content and it feels like an attempt to feel liked by trashing political correctness.

I would not even urge anyone to watch out of curiosity.

Mediocre at best
mozzarella533 January 2020
I can gloss over the politicized and exaggerated opinions, but this show is just plain disappointing. The only time I even smiled was for a second during the Holocaust bit, but then I was immediately reminded why I wasn't laughing in the first place. Her connections between jokes were alright, and she's ok at telling stories, but the skills don't really matter if the content isn't good. Some people like it, though, so you might as well give it a shot.

A voice of healing
daisy-222029 January 2020
It was a new incredible voice I wanted and needed to hear. Not your typical comedy stand up but who is Ilana Glazer to do anything typical? It felt like just a different version of story telling like Hasan Minhaj's pieces. All of her art is very thoughtful. Her opinions are well crafted and you can tell she works hard to use her platform for a greater cause than just getting a laugh. Her bravery and warmth shine through and seeing works like this give me hope. It was one of the first stand ups where I genuinely felt like I didn't have to brace myself for a racist stereotyping punch line.

Thank you Ilana. I think pieces like this are more of stories needed to be told than wanting a cheap laugh on a Wednesday night.

Not good enough for an open mic
denzil-0943430 January 2020
5 minutes of dancing followed by 50 minutes of out of breath filler on the fly. I have exactly as much respect for this performance as the performer has for the audience. Zero.

Trying to hard to be something relevant.
kollasch-378163 August 2020
First off it was so cringeworthy I could not go pass the halfway point.

She is trying to be something I dont think she even believes. The jokes were reduced to some sort of male bashing and LGBTQ positive rant. But it didnt come off as comedy, maybe tragedy.

Horrible
bwils4410 January 2020
These woke comedians get laughs from the mental patients in their audiences but that's where the laughs end. Ilana tries to be cutting edge here but flops miserably. The only people laughing are drunk and subscribe to the same idiotic woke culture. These people make morons look like Stephen Hawking. What a cringe inducing liberal mess. Do not waste your time.

"Patriarchy". That's so 1960s; Find new material
joshdestardi5 January 2020
Bland, dumb and more of the same from a 'woke' comedian.

How much longer will 'comics' (and I use the word loosely here) be accepted by the woke crowd as long as they're bland, milquetoast and a complete mirror image of the woke crowd....vs. brave, unrestrained, laugh at everyone, every group, every thing not politically correct which actually makes it F U N N Y?

My God how far we've fallen.

Love Broad City, Don't Love This
uberholly31 January 2020
At first I thought there was something wrong with *me* because I wasn't laughing. Before I knew it I'd turned away to, like, fold laundry while I listened. It never got funnier; in fact it never got funny. You can be woke or not, be feminist or post-millennial or blasé or blue or observational or slapstick a damn mime as long as you're funny. If you're not funny -- then you're doing it wrong.
