Camp Meh
Kaptain_Bluddflagg15 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Contains spoilers.

This movie is about a boy who is part of a covenant community that is beginning to have doubts about the religion he was raised to believe in, and his experiences at a summer camp for other youths from that same community. The devil makes a cameo, though this time in the form of hallucinations brought on by mass hysteria, which was a result of the indoctrination of all of the people involved. I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian church that had a lot in common with a covenant community and I am now agnostic...mostly because of the way that religious groups in general, and the one I belonged to in particular, indoctrinate their younger members.

A lot from this movie made my skin crawl and brought back a lot of memories, but it wasn't really scary, at least not in a way that is usually associated with horror movies. For me it was a reminder of the evils of religion, of the way religious groups tend to brainwash themselves and anyone they can get their hands on. While I never saw anything as extreme as what was portrayed in this movie, I did hear a lot of the same kind of nonsense about sin and the devil and all of that. Guilt seems to be the predominant feeling elicited in many as a result of partaking of religion (especially Catholicism), and it took me a long time to get over the guilt I felt not only for wanting to disassociate myself from the religious group I was affiliated with, but also for not wanting to be considered a Christian.

This movie accurately portrays the ways in which young people are treated while being indoctrinated. The summer camp, the school they attend, the picnics and gatherings they enjoyed as children, all are part of a system designed to tie a person to a group of people and to ensure that they all adhere to a rigid code of "morality". While this movie seems to be denouncing this type of community it doesn't really do so as strongly as it probably should have.

You might notice that in this review I didn't really go into the plot of the movie all that much; the reason is that the plot is rather bland and uninteresting. It has its moments, but in the end it just wasn't that engaging. The only part of the movie I enjoyed was seeing a particularly obnoxious camp counselor getting his clock cleaned. The obnoxious priest did not really get what he deserved, which was to be publicly discredited, though he did end up in a coma. Also, the main character is portrayed as being disturbed; this movie would have been much better if he had realized that his beliefs were destroying him and renounced them. His speech when refusing to take the Eucharist at the end was more...lame (for lack of a better word) than moving or thought provoking.

While I am all for something different, this movie made me nostalgic for more conventional horror fare. I'd much rather see a bunch of people killed by a ubiquitous knife-wielding psycho, and women randomly taking off their clothes for no apparent reason, than watch a movie that does a rather poor job of tackling a serious issue.

Camp hell, more like movie hell
Johnny_que18 September 2010
Thoroughly unimpressed.

I gave this movie two stars because at least the special effects were somewhat decent. Either than that, this movie was pure hell to sit through and watch.

I was under the impression that this was a horror film, setting the story with a Christian camp. Usually in horror movies, it sets the scene for normal life at the camp, and then some guy comes and starts stabbing them all. That was the only thing that kept me watching the movie, because I was waiting for that to happen. SERIOUS LIFE MISTAKE!

Don't wait on this movie like I did, you will be horrified, but only in the sense that you just wasted your life away watching this.

When did sin enter your life?
nogodnomasters25 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Jesse Eisenberg does appear in the movie, but not for long. The movie seems to confuse Christian denominational theology. Traditional Catholics do not believe in "end-time" signs and prophecy. While they do believe in purgatory, they are not that big into it as they used to be. Tommy is connected to a demon, but we aren't sure how and why. There are a bunch of kids at Christian summer camp which is comical as a comic book is torn up and a Journey CD is the instrument of the devil. Tommy keeps asking the question, "If God is in control why is there a devil?" The priest asks Tommy, "When did you let sin into your life?" Of course masturbation is one of Tommy's "gateway" sins. Who knows where it might lead...

The sex scene consists of two teens (one a 16 year old virgin "harlot") dry humping in the dark.

I will say I was confused by the ending and the message of the movie. Is this an atheist movie or a movie whose message is that Satan uses long drawn out conversions to create atheists by manifesting himself as a demon? Does the movie really mean to say Steve Perry is a demon seed, or makes fun of those who do?

As a serious Christian movie, I would give it one star. As a movie that makes fun of Christians...maybe 2 stars.

No nudity, or gosh darn swearing. Dry humping, references to rock group "Journey" and Spawn comic book. Kids almost eating jelly beans. What I really can't believe is the "R" rating. As Sara might tweet, "WTF?"

Will mean more to those who are fundamental christians
prizm417 April 2011
Perhaps this movie is better described as a psychological thriller, rather than horror.

It details events based on the director's own experience as a teenager. A teen is sent to a church camp that is an odd mix between catholicism and fundamental Christianity (baptist/charismatic). Apparently it's a real sect of Christianity called the People of Hope that I hadn't heard of before.

Having grown up in fundamental Christianity, I recognised a lot of the teachings in this film, and I don't think the director over-exaggerated any of it. There are supernatural events in the film, though those events seem to be the hallucinations of the christians themselves, brought on by their indoctrination.

The film's core point is the guilt and fear that fundamental Christianity puts in people, particularly those who grew up in the church. Everything you do is a sin or allows "the devil" into your life. Whether it be a worldly comic book, or sex before marriage, both are treated equally as bad and there is no excuse. Ironically, there is no grace or real love - it's all about condemnation, suppression, and always trying to be 'holy' (which can never happen since humans are imperfect).

This constant indoctrination by the church leaves many christians full of guilt, fear, and in extreme cases, psychotic.

The film could've been a bit shorter and it does have a bit of an indie feel. I think the audience it will speak to the most is those who have any experience with fundamental Christianity. In that respect, I recommend they watch this film.

Bad not made for TV movie
Funchingo17 September 2010
The acting was okay. The story was interesting until it went absolutely nowhere. It was a road that should have stayed less traveled. The movie is suppose to be based on true events. But what the hell where those events. The story telling is so fragmented and ambiguous, and perhaps would have been better told in say 22 minutes ala Twilight Zone, but the plot is so stretched that the filler dilutes whatever message the movie makers wanted to make. I waited until the last minute to see if this movie would "save" itself, yet alas no. I only sacrificed 90 minutes of time to trite. Oh, and the music, the score, or whatever it was, was just awful. In fact, the music used during the opening credits should have tipped me off to the crap that lied ahead.

90 Minutes of Hell
burden8912 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Camp Hell was worse than an after school special. I am shocked to find they spent $3 million on this film. I get the religious undertones of guilt and torment these teens go through in a church community but the title is really deceiving. The direction, pace and plot was also pure torture to observe. What made this movie even worse is the fact your waiting for something scary to happen based on the suspenseful trailer. However, it appears Lionsgate spent more time on the trailer than the actual movie. I rank Camp Hell as one of the worse horror films I've ever seen because it was: (1) really bad; and (2)it took itself so seriously.

Movie was not Horror
Kelloggs-5013 August 2011
This movie was not a horror movie. Jess Eisenberg was on the cover of this movie but had probably about a minute or two in the movie. If I see a picture of a famous actor on movie cover, I expect to see a whole lot more of him. The movie is not worth renting or buying. Don't waste your time renting it! Oh and to the gentlemen who said Lawsuit. This type of storyline has been done to death. Some kids going to some camp of some type and being chased, haunted or whatever by some madman, demon etcetera. Your Teaser trailers only show some guy running around in some fangs and blue make-up. Also, Even if you try to take them to court, You have no clue how long that script has been written and approved and copyrighted for a film format. Besides, They can use any storyline that they want as long as it doesn't follow the exact same format of a particular piece.

Born again Christian advert.
nexus620104 May 2011
Why this has been listed on most sites as a horror film I will never know.It is, without any doubt a 90 min ad for the benefits of Christianity.

A young boy in a strict Christian family goes to summer camp where he is told that Looking at girls will make him burn in hell, as will reading comics, eating jelly beans ??????,wanking, listening to rock music and, well everything thats fun really. Here he fins he may be being followed by a demon.

What is scary about this film is that it makes no apology for its views, which in most people opinion are far right wing Christian ideals.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. OR BURN IN HELL. lol

this is a movie where nothing happens seriously, you wait for something to happen but nope. its mostly a waste of time, do not rent this trust me it is very bad! there is one thing that happens, the movie ends. the only thing i liked about this movie was that how bad the camp was and how bad the priest was if you don't believe me give it a rent then you will!basically there is this kid that doesn't like Jesus or god so they send him to this camp where they try and help him believe then the kid starts having nightmares and and the priest there trying to help him is to religious and says these terrible things to him and doesn't want them to have any contact with the girls there. thats basically it.

indeed hell
trashgang15 March 2011
Over here it's called camp hell, a perfect title, it was indeed hell to watch, or in the US it was released as camp hope, yes, i hoped it was over. What was this that I just watched, luckily I paid almost nothing for this piece of crap. I thought that you couldn't get worser than the Twilight franchise but it could be done. This is all about not having intercourse or don't masturbate. And don't get me wrong, you won't see any of this. This is for me just a promo for fundamental Christians. Nothing else happens. No horror, no scary parts, no nudity, no nothing except 3 dead pigeons beheaded, man was I afraid. If you are a Christian in real life than you will surely masturbate on this one but for the pagans, as they call it, don't visit camp hell.

This sucked.
vampyrecowboy23 October 2010
So, I saw this for free and it just sucked.

Too much religion preaching and just too boring.

The story just drags and drags and drags.

How many times does somebody have to be lectured about sex and how wrong it is? This movie is such BS on so many levels.

Even though this was free, it still was a waste of time.

Where was the horror? Where was the scary? Nope - not here.

Go to bed instead - maybe you'll have a nightmare.

Boo.

Am I at ten lines yet?

An unconventional psychological horror film that will stay with the freethinkers and exorcises the close-minded.
iworkfortheharold26 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I just saw this film and it blew me away. For some people, this film will be a disappointment. Why? Because people are expecting a conventional horror flick. They see "religion" and "demon" and think: "Oh, exorcism movie, not again." This film takes the religion theme to a whole new level.

It's basically a social commentary on the dangers of how some people interpret religion. Religion itself has nothing wrong with it, it's how people interpret it that makes it such a touchy subject. The concept of "Saint vs. Sinner" is executed beautifully and it will make you think long after the credits have rolled. If it doesn't, then maybe films like this one simply aren't for you.

I've seen many people on here talking about how this is not a horror. This is not true, but not false either. Horror is subjective. Some see blood-and-gore flicks as horror, some say horror is something psychological. Is this a horror film to me? Absolutely. Jump scares, dramatic music and tension doesn't equal horror in my book. That's evoking a natural human reaction known as shock. Jump scares aren't a valid horror device because it doesn't evoke fear. Fear is being afraid of what is to come, not screaming with your heart going 300 BPM because someone just jumped out of a closet to really loud musical effects.

Camp Hell is a very interesting and beautifully executed psychological horror film that pushes the boundaries of what people perceive as horror. If this doesn't apply to you, you're watching the wrong genre of films. Harsh? No, simply an opinion. The horror community needs more films like this.

I really must break a lance for this movie!
headsign27 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Tommy, an adolescent teenager from a obviously Christian fundamentalist family, is sent to a boot camp where boys and girls of his age are expected to learn to deny theirs lusts and live their future lives in pure faith. Camp Hope is led by Fr. McAllister, a priest who is at the same time charismatic and fanatically devoted to fundamentalist Christian belief and his right hand, Christian, a drill sergeant type of guy. Then there is Bob, the camp's entertainer who seems to be the only staff member with more moderate opinions and nurse Carol, the camp nanny who believes that prayer heals better than medicine. Of course, putting adolescent boys and girls together in a summer camp is like leaving a cat alone with a fishbowl. Forbidden lust soon leads to "sin" which leads to guilt and all results in psychological catastrophe, inner conflict and psychosis.

The movie's biggest problem is that it first appears to be a classical teenage slasher flick but then turns out to be a fine psychological coming of age movie which settles with the tragic pressure of extreme religious morality. The cast is well-chosen and the playing is really good. Especially Fr. McAllister is highly realistic as an overly devoted priest who strongly believes in the path of pure faith, despite the fact that his very influence has, in the past, already caused a young man to become criminally insane and also despite of his recurring psychotic visions. Unfortunately, the way this movie is marketed, one would rather expect a sort of remake of slasher classics like "Sleepaway Camp", thus the rightful anger of nice and sleazy horror flick fans who feel like they were tricked into watching 90 minutes of pseudo horror and no one got murdered, eviscerated or beheaded.

If, like me, you are equally able to enjoy a movie like "Friday the 13th" and a movie by Aldomovár or a light-hearted coming of age movie like "Little Darlings" and if you're not offended by direct and open critic at fundamentalist Christian morality, you're quite likely to enjoy this movie. Otherwise, stay away! It's probably not the movie's fault if you don't like it, neither is it yours but most probably the undecided marketing which positions it as a horror flick.

amkn7517 June 2022
"Based on true events" came up at the end of the movie. If that was at the beginning I wouldn't have continued.

It's a terrible movie about, one of many, true horrors of this world; religion.

watch this if you're interested in a genre that could be called 'christian horror'
neonexitsign10 August 2011
i rented this from redbox, and was pretty disappointed in it. i'm a fan of all types of horror movies, but in my opinion, mr. vanbuskirk could have done a lot more to give it some kind of menacing atmosphere...it's like i spent most of the movie waiting for the movie to start, honestly. there were several side stories, none of which were brought to conclusion, or developed enough to be anything more then an addition to a confusing movie. camp hell had some potential, but seems like the director was so intent on trying to fit everything he wanted to do in one movie that he ended up with too much stuff, too little time. i would skip this. at first i thought it was a new genre, Christian horror...after reading an interview with him apparently this was not the case, but it still didn't turn out very well.

Camp Boring
ArchieIsCool27 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
On watching this I was hoping for some sort of horror after watching a trailer. Its about a camp for Christian teens sent by their parents to pray, sing and listen to the priest who runs it. Its more supernatural than horror concentrating on Thomas a teen who has bad dreams of a demon, at the camp a girl catches his eye and they pet in the woods which is a mortal sin.

I was waiting for the horror but there is not any! The priest is all for being pure and having no sins and is played well be the actor in fact the acting is fine but I was disappointed by the lack of gore that will teach me to watch a one minute trailer which misled me.

Its based on a true story.

Overall a childish time pass movie, which you can rent, if you have young siblings or kids in the house and they want to watch a horror movie. :p

CAMP HOPE/HELL – TRASH IT ( D ) Camp Hope/Hell, well I thought it's going to be Scary after watching its promos but it was not at all, totally made for children and even I guess made by a kid too, seems like. Though it doesn't means it's not enjoyable, it is good time pass watching same thing about God and Satin. Will Denton and Valentina de Angelis chemistry is lovable. Conner paolo did a good job. Dana Delany was just there and perfect as always. Jesse Eisenberg did friendly cameo. Overall a childish time pass movie, which you can rent, if you have young siblings or kids in the house and they want to watch a horror movie. :p

Camp for unruly Christian kids
bkoganbing12 July 2020
Here's a time waster of a film. If you think that you will see another Exorcist movie, forget it. If you think this is a celebration iof religion, forget it.

Father Bruce Davison runs a camp where good Catholics send their kids every summer. This place is mainly to teach about giving into temptation especially those sins of the flesh. But other things too. Imagine confiscating jelly beans. Where's God's commandment aganst them?

The only sin is sitting through this tripe and see a lot of good players waste time and talent.

Evil, Power-Mad "Monks" Are The Real Horror
LeonLouisRicci25 July 2012
A psychological study of the horrors of fundamentalist indoctrination. It's a competent, well mounted, and professional looking film for a low-budget effort.

The movie delivers some creepy moments and a scene or two that scares (in the Horror movie method). But it is not a slasher, gore, or monster movie.

One gets the impression that the anti-religious elements are soft-peddled somewhat. Could the Writer/Director still be suffering from a real-life repression of his feelings ("based on true events" says the credits).

The villainous brain-washers are portrayed as good-natured, sincere, folks doing God's work and don't have any real threat or diabolical intent. Isn't that the "horror" of it all? The harm and damage done by this type of closed-minded inculcation of young people.

One gets the feeling that the reality is that these people, deep in their souls, know exactly what they are doing and are nothing more than evil, power-mad "monks" and it is disturbing that so many people fall for it. That is truly scary.

Horribly misconceived and apparently deceptively marketed...
MrGKB11 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
..."Camp Hell" is a perfect example of why producers shouldn't be allowed to write or direct (stick with what you know) as well as a classic case of wasting money. Three million dollars, seriously? Where did it go, up people's noses? Numerous name actors lend their cred to this pitiful excuse for a cautionary tale of the dangers of hidebound religious dogma, and can only be forgiven if they were otherwise out of work. I'm not naming names because I'm pretty sure they're already fairly ashamed of themselves, right, Jesse? Andrew, Dana, Bruce? Are you listening? The youngsters can get away with it; they've still got careers ahead of them, as long as they don't make mistakes like this too often. You adults should know better. Have I reached the minimum word count yet? Good, that's more than enough typing wasted on this dreck. Yet another black mark on the reputation of whoever picks the videos for my local library.

When I first started to watch this movie I wasn't quite sure what to think as it was quite wired to start of with. however half way through the movie i did find my self getting interested in the plot which i taught they built up quite well. I really enjoyed all of the actors performances. This is quite an usual movie with a different plot than maost movies so it takes sometime to understand what is going on but it is still an OK movie.

A pathetic, paltry effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder6 April 2017
Sent to a missionary camp for teens, a man finds himself targeted by a demonic force intent on driving him insane as he tries to follow the strict doctrine imposed by the camp and tries to find what's going on and why he's being targeted without letting the founders know.

For a variety of reasons, this was a really lame horror effort. The most egregious of all these flaws is mainly due to the fact that there's just nothing going on here, as this one was just a chore to get through due to its pace. There are so many scenes throughout here that are just utterly torturous to get through, from their initial bunk inspections to the endless camp sing-a-long sessions, the sharing groups and all the different interactions with the authority figures keep this one moving on at a strictly plodding pace. Although it's clearly the film's intention to spell the significance of these activities through their priority and focus, the fact still remains that there's no energy or effort in this one to get through these scenes as instead they are just utterly lifeless throughout here and really showcase their hypocrisy rather than offering up the chance for horror-based scares, leaving this one so agonizingly slow it might lull you to sleep before getting to the first lame scare. That's another really big problem area to overcome here, in that the film is so heavy-handed in its religious nonsense by wandering through the proceedings with more focus on the bible study and religious teachings than the horror scenes so that it doesn't give off all that many chances to do anything that's remotely concerned with being a horror effort as this portrayal of right-in-their-mindset religious teachings are just so much to take at times that it really makes this one so tough to take with no scares and so much nonsensical religious banter. The last big flaw to be found here is the fact that when it really tries to be a horror film in the first half, it really does fail to excite or thrill as the potential demonic manifestations and hallucinations are kept so short it's hard to make out what exactly you're supposed to be afraid of and they're so infrequently observed it tends to forget exactly what it's supposed to be, basically just showing them off in short, shaky spurts that make it impossible to tell what happened during these segments and really just proving to be a real failure on most fronts. Despite these issues holding it back, there are a few areas that do work here. One of the film's saving graces is having a bit more energy in the last half and actually gets the chance to feature some more traditional horror elements with the series of fine temptations and encounters throughout the camp as the series of scenes playing around with the demonic figures in the cabins or going around possessing the teens still there. Even with these positives, it's still far too little too late for this one.

Rated R: Language, Mild Violence and a clothed sex scene.

Absolutely brilliant, thoughtful, scary masterpiece of horror
ciccowski-672-64084820 July 2011
If you liked movies like Black Swan, Session 9, The Mechinist, or Jacob's Ladder, then you will love this movie. It's a very thoughtful story of how badly a young mind can be hurt through religious brainwashing. A lot of people here say this movie doesn't make any sense and stuff like that. I think they just can't read the symbols beneath the surface. A lot of the things we see in this movie are the visions of a disturbed mind, they can't be taken literally. A lot of people think a movie has no story when this story is not told in the classical form they teach you in school when you're a kid, but if you're just a little bit smarter you will appreciate this movie as a masterpiece of narrative and psychological terror. And if you ever had a psychotic breakdown you will recognize yourself in the main character, because he is brilliantly constructed. And anyone who is studying professional psychology will find in this movie a very good example of how a child who's being forced to think in a certain way by using terror and fright to convince him, can reach to a level of fear that will cause him a psychotic breakdown and completely melt down. This movie may have a lot of elements that may seem to be supernatural, but that's only in a superficial level, behind those visions you will see this movie as one of the most realistic movies you'll ever see. This happens all the time to young people.

Camp No-Fun.
Someguysomwhere18 September 2010
The doings at the camp of an extreeemely religious community from the perspective of a young man who is troubled by bad dreams and the added complication of his feelings for a girl which is prohibited by the strictures of his religious teachings.

Curious things begin to happen; apparently some kind of demonic attack and persecution and the young man seems somehow at the center of it --or perhaps the group as a whole because of their unreasonable excess. Whatever is happening, be it group hallucination, brainwashing, or reality, it seems that they have somehow brought it on themselves; invited it through their stern conditioning and behavior.

Finally, it's an interesting psychological movie and worth a look. Good story with fresh young actors and adequate to good acting. The lesson may be that at some extreme point of devotion, though well intentioned, reason can be abandoned and the devotion unwittingly transferred to something else. Perhaps the opposite of your intent. When reason is gone, nothing good remains. Love, Boloxxxi.

Pathetic Christian Boy.
eff-eww_kbi12 April 2012
UGGGGH! This movie was so pathetic! The boy who played the Christian was a terrible actor.

The story line was dumb! I cannot believe I even attempted to watch this movie.

Terrible! It will possess you with scoffs and lots of eye rolling.

No WAIT! You know who would like this movie? A pathetic Christian boy that wants to be scared.

Bleh! During the duration of the movie I expected something awesome to happen.

It was so bland and boring, even the 'climax' scenes.

No discernible plot line what so ever. DO NOT watch this movie!
