(CD-SEAS Chalcone Derivatives Series - Synthesis & Evaluation of Antimicrobials in Space)
Submitting a proposal for the Mars One Competition is done for the purposes of scientific discovery, increasing antibiotic effectiveness in space for Astronauts, and for developing potential new treatments on Earth. This is to be achieved through synthesizing a series of chalcones derivatives, utilizing the constant of a chloro with its location on every position of the aromatic ring. Determination of the antimicrobial efficacy in space in regard to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli will be performed through indirect methods to make observations to the change in the environment around these synthesized molecules.
Brennan Callan and Jonna Ocampo belonged to an astronautic training organization and the film is based on her original research in Hawai'i that she was doing for a college degree. She hoped to get her positively unique research placed onboard of a spacecraft heading for Mars. The film did rather well as it was based on quality science. A few other films of research projects were selected as the "winners" head of Jonna's research. In the long run, about 2-years later, the MARS ONE UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE was in financial bankruptcy. Therefore, whether the other projects that "won" had their outside funding, in the end, none of the projects are going to space as the Mars One University Challenge no longer exists. It was good to work on this project and make strides towards having a project get into the final rounds for the best scientific projects. It made all of the team proud to participate on this film.
