- A vampire lands work as a private investigator and falls for mortal woman.
- Mick St. John is not your average P.I. He's a vampire, he's trying to make an (un)living in L.A, and maintaining his secret. A co-ed is murdered with vampiric undertones. A female reporter tries to find the culprit as well, and why Mick seems so familiar to her.—Jesse Sanchez
- Private Investigator Mick St John (Alex O'Loughlin) is a vampire albeit not your typical Hollywood vampire (although he does live in Los Angeles). He sleeps in a freezer instead of a coffin, does not hunt and kill victims (except for the occasional bad guy), drinks blood provided by his friend Guillermo Gasol (Jacob Vargas) at the morgue, likes garlic on pizza, cannot be destroyed by a stake through the heart, is nonplussed by holy water and crucifixes, and cannot turn into a bat. He does, however, have fangs and a problem with sunlight if he's in it too long. He's also superstrong, superfast, and can live forever unless he is destroyed by fire or decapitation.
Twenty-two years after saving four-year old Beth Turner from Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), the vampire who turned him almost 60 years ago, Mick runs into Beth (Sophia Myles) at the scene of a murder. Beth doesn't recognize Mick and has no idea that he has been keeping an eye on her all these years. Now that Beth is working as an investigative reporter for Buzzwire Ezine and is in the public eye, Mick is increasingly concerned for her safety. Beth is currently investigating the death of a Hearst College student, Kelly Foster, who was found with two holes in her neck and a 40% blood loss. Though two puncture wounds to the neck make it appear to Beth that the young coed was killed by a vampire, Mick poohpoohs that idea because, of course, "there's no such thing as vampires." The reason that Mick knows this isn't the case, however, is because he detects no smell of vampire on the dead girl. Mick and his extremely rich vampire friend Josef Kostan (Jason Dohring) are concerned that the story is going to evoke public interest in vampires and endanger them, so Mick does some investigating on his own.
When Mick's trail coincides with Beth's, they share notes and suspect that Dr Christian Ellis (Rudolf Martin), a social anthropology professor at the college and a self-proclaimed vampire who uses his knowledge of vampire lore to seduce coeds, may be involved int he murder. Ellis is the leader of a vampire study group made up primarily of goth chicks and Ellis's TA, Daniel. When a second killing brings them no closer to an answer, Beth goes undercover as a new student in Ellis's class and gets herself invited to the vampire study group. Unfortunately, she angers Ellis when he notices the tape recorder under her blouse, and he attacks her, trying to get the recorder. Beth manages to get away from Ellis but runs straight into the arms of the T.A., who reveals himself as being the one killing the coeds in order to stop Ellis from wasting his pranic energy (lifeforce) on them.
Daniel injects Beth with a tranquilizer and drags her away in his car. Mick catches up with them and leaps at the window, distracting Daniel, who smashes his car into several other cars and ends up wrapped around a lightpole. Mick is tossed off the car and winds up laying in the street, stunned and injured. He sees Daniel get out of the car and walk around to the other side, knife in hand. Just as Daniel is about to stab Beth in the neck with the knife, Mick gets up from the ground and rushes at Daniel. Instead of Beth, Daniel stabs Mick in the abdomen. Mick knocks Daniel across the road. Daniel smashes into a lightpole and lands on the car windshield, his head cracking it to bits. Mick carries Beth back to his apartment.
Epilogue: When Beth comes to, she recognizes Mick as the man who saved her 22 years ago. Then she remembers seeing Daniel stab Mick, but Mick isn't even wounded now. Mick convinces her that she just suffered a bad bump to her head and needs to rest. He offers to take her home. As Beth gets up to leave, she hugs Mick. At first, he doesn't seem to know how to hug her back, but he ends up encircling her in his arms and drawing her tightly.
