Same look, very different feel from the FFFB comics
supermellowcali7 February 2022
Wow, this should be so much better... but it's a show that will resonate with (mostly older) people who read the creative, bold and unique comics. Unfortunately, we're also the ones who noticed the drastic personality differences in the characters, changes that aren't an improvement or an interpretation, but mistakes IMO that disrupt the enjoyment, especially the cast-- seemed to be totally wrong voices, or at least way different from how I imagined them.

They'll never achieve the underground perfection so many yearn for
mfoxartist5 August 2023
I watched all episodes of both seasons (the second half of season 2 comes in the fall of 2023). It's got way too much bathroom humor (what IS the fascination with that crap?), but I liked the voices just fine.

Pete Davidson, who I didn't love on SNL, actually does a good job, though he's been lambasted here and on other review sites. But he'll always be lambasted on review sites. A lot of people hate him. Harrelson and Goodman were fine too, though Goodman is the weakest of the three and Fat Freddy -- with the endless bathroom humor -- is now my least favorite character.

I was surprised by them changing Fat Freddy's Cat's gender to female. But I found her to be the funniest character of everyone. Despite the gender change, she still behaved like Fat Freddy's Cat would behave.

I'm just happy it's on TV and streaming. Hell, it's the Freak Brothers! I'm happy to support Gilbert by adding my viewership. I hope it runs 5 or 6 years. Best thing is, there's almost no censorship and it's violent, foul-mouthed, drug-induced and nudity-laced humor, way beyond adult animation on Fox or Comedy Central.

I get that people want what THEY see as the ultimate perfection in depicting the Freak Brothers in any series (or movie, for that matter). But I've written extensively on the Freak Brothers on my Comixjoint website, and this series is a decent uptake on the characters. I could live without so much toilet humor, but overall I think it's pretty enjoyable and they are bringing fresh life to a nearly-dead genre and engaging a whole new generation in underground comix. That is a huge positive in my book!

Funnier than I anticipated
gsbuie6 December 2021
My husband read the comics back in the day and loved them. So when he saw the animated show on Tubi he was thrilled, me not so much. I was afraid it was going to be stupid and I'm not a Davidson fan.

With that said, it's funny as hell IF YOU ENJOY STONER HUMOR. If you do not, don't bother. But if you do watch now! Ms. Haddish as the Cat steals the show. She is side splitting funny. Harrelson is exceptional, Davidson surprised me...maybe because I don't have to look at his ugly face. The weirdest is Goodman. He just sounds wrong. I was hoping for a moon more 'Big Lebowski' type voice.

With the cast you should think them stoners should at least amuze a stoner. And the females,? Why portraited so not real. Only thing that could saved this would been more dimensions. Of and away.

FREAKY TIME TRAVEL FUN
Sunsphxsuns14 November 2021
Like another reviewer, in the 60s I used to buy and read the various "underground comic books" like Zap, Comix, Arcade, Bijou Funnies, Wimmen's Comix, Mr. Natural, Wonder Wart-Hog and The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. These adult-themed comics were written and drawn by legendary artists such as R. Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Kim Deitch, Trina Robbins, Spain Rodriguez, and Gilbert Shelton (Wonder Wart-Hog and The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers were the genius creations of Gilbert Shelton).

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers first appeared in 1968 and had a prominent role in a Austin-based underground newspaper called "The Rag." The Freak Brothers were an immediate hit, and their stoner adventures were eventually published in a comic book series of their own.

This new 2021 Tubi cartoon series mirrors their comic book exploits. It's very good but it is absolutely not for kids. Like the older underground comics, this updated animated version revolves around the purchase and habitual usage of marijuana. Fat Freddy's Cat also reprises his role in this series, and like his human hippie friends, his daily activities are focused on the procurement and enjoyment of Marijuana.

No spoilers here. This is a new series and will definitely attract counter culture baby boomers who adored these hilarious druggy characters and their misadventures. Of course, that is, if they can remember the outrageous comics that were an integral part of growing up in the 60s.

Oh, wow. This is so bad. Really, really bad.
ersatz_cw5 December 2021
I own a bunch of the old Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics, so I'm quite familiar with the characters and genre of humor, but this show is an abomination in just about every way imaginable. It's shockingly unfunny, for starters.

At least one reviewer mentioned that this show must be for fans of the comics, but I'm here to tell you otherwise. I can't abide it.

Really about all I can say for this show is that it pushes all the wrong buttons for me and I will most definitely not be watching it any further. Hopefully it fades into obscurity very soon.

Freaky 2020
The Freak Brothers made a Timeskip to 2020 and it works. I own some of the Comic Books and it's funny to see them exploring our time today. And with John Goodman and Woody Harrelson it has some excellent Speakers. If you like freaky Cartoons and Stoner Humor then this is for you.

Who're these brothers supposed to be?
skitofit22 December 2021
After reading tons of Robert crumb. And watching the evolution of the freak brothers in their first comics, all I can think is... "what's this s%it?" These aren't the burn out hippies I remember reading about. That's not fat Freddy's cat's personality lol. What's going on here?? Lol.

Counterculture comics rescusitated!
robnoel14 November 2021
I read the sh** out of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics as a kid...usually after smoking a fat doob. This seems pretty true to the original spirit of the comic books...nonsensical and funny. I'm talking in the 80's...the comics were dated by then, but still pretty funny. I know I'm admitting to toking before it was legal, but I'm sure there's a statute of limitations. Either way...I plead the fifth dimension!

Warning: Spoilers
I read the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics throughout the 70s and still have them all. The comics were pure genius. Hilarious political and social satire.

This show is crap.

The humour is basic slapstick and fart jokes. The social commentary is limited to the Freaks being overwhelmed by modern technology, a premise that's been done to death - and better - in countless other media. Example: Freddie is convinced that smartphones, which he sees people using, are Pop-Tarts and he tries to eat one.

Dave Sheridan is rolling over in his grave.

Freakin' Awful
hogryderhvl8 December 2021
I just hope Gilbert Shelton was not involved in this unmitigated garbage in any way. If he was, shame on him. Wretched, awful, pathetic, inferior and shabby are just a few terms that come to mind. If you hold dear the original comics, DON'T look at this. No amount of weed, drugs and alcohol could make this crap not stink. Best to remember it as it was (sigh). Fat Freddy, go out and score us a GOOD animated series and don't get BURNED this time!

Does it get any better?
dougfm5 December 2021
Despite liking the three guys playing the brothers, this is some unfunny stuff. They all pass out for decades, okay sure, why not. But the jokes just aren't there. And John Goodman doing a high pitched stoner voice just isn't working for me. He should've played it more in his natural voice. This show is definitely for the fans of the original comic book which I'm guessing is a very selective audience.

Getting better but....
kvhbfqsy13 December 2021
If you are one of those people who insist on any remake being perfectly true to the original comic book series then you will certainly be disappointed. Definitely it is not for everyone because of the bathroom/gutter humor but still some creative writing by episode 6 and enough laughs. As others have said, the voice casting seems ok with one big exception...Pete Davidson. Truly awful both in his vocal sound and in his inability to avoid overacting.

Naaah, just nah!
orcinussr18 November 2021
Listen, I'm all about the animation, especially when the characters are voiced by legends AND THEY ARE! - but it's horrible, just horrible and even worse, it's not really adult humor in spite of it dealing with adult themes - soo... Pass, reluctantly pass.

I like it....
janglez-1997817 December 2021
The reviews are pretty harsh for the most part. It's pretty good for what its meant to be. It's just a goofy cartoon that doesn't try hard. It doesn't need to try. It's just a cartoon trying to have a loose fun time without being judged by a bunch of couch critics scoring each joke. I don't get the hate for Pete Davidson. I actually think his voice is a good match for the phineas. His character has no filter and his facade of confidence is what makes the character funny. Woody Harrelson makes me laugh too with his relaxed demeanor and hilarious comments in every situation. The dialogue is great and his voice matches up perfectly with Franklin. John Goodman also does a good job. I know people complain about the high pitch lazy voice but it seems to fit the character perfectly. I actually still can't believe it's John Goodman doing the voice. In my opinion the casting was great. Adam Lavine has some scattered scenes that add good chemistry to the 3 main characters. The premise is goofy/silly/stupid but it's on purpose and that's what makes the show funny. It's a really good show to watch after work and kick it on the couch. It's both funny and relaxing to watch in my opinion. I think this show is a good fit for mellow people who can laugh at themselves and not take it seriously. It's comedy and it's a cartoon. Take it for what it is and enjoy it.....or don't. BTW I'm stoned right now, but I hope that doesn't take credibility points away from my review hahahaha. Two thumbs up dudes. 👍👍

Not funny at all! Annoying voices of all the characters. Jokes are not funny. I thought John Goodman had better sense than this. I see why this is on Tubi. No real streaming service would touch this mess if a show. Don't watch it.

The Most Iconic Underground Comic FINALLY Gets Its Due!
druidofparadise17 November 2021
The cast is perfect and the source material is well respected. Gilbert Shelton's spirit is definitely visible in each of the episodes I've seen so far. I really hope the suits in whatever board room this show is beholden to keep it going for a few years!

stud_meister_footlong8 December 2021
I was so excited to watch this series. I even dug through my old collection of the original comics - most pages yellowed and musky - to refresh my fondest stories.

Woody Harrelson and Pete Davidson were perfect as Franklin and Phineas, sounding how I might have imagined them. The BIG disconnect was Goodman's miserable attempt at Fat Freddy sounding like Curly Joe from the 3 stooges. And honestly what gives with Tiffany Haddish as Fat Freddy's cat? Totally not cool with the gender swap.

I watched episode 1, 2 and just gave up midway through 3 with the stupid Jeff Bezo's thing. Fat Freddy's cat was smart, but not that smart. This could have been so much better if the writers were not so lazy.

I cannot believe Gilbert Shelton greenlit this mess.
abba-110025 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am a child of the 70's and 80's and grew up with the classic comix, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and the stand alone Fat Freddy Scat (Kitty) comix. This series is a mess, the two biggest severe disappointments are that they turned the cat female, and Fat Freddy into a moron.

Harrelson, Goodman, Davidson & Haddish are all perfect for their roles. As a big fan of the original comic books, this series is outstanding! I've outgrown my need for the weed but this series still makes me laugh. Too bad there are only eight episodes. Enjoy!

I love watching this series, it has excellent music, and I love the characters, even though I've added a few errors that I caught while rewatching it. All in all, I love this toon in the same way that I love the comic series.

No. Just-no.
leighalero30 November 2021
Can't SOME things just remain classic without the need for insipid reinterpretation? Who is the target audience here, anyway? "Kids" couldn't possibly GAF about "old hippies" and any "old hippie" with a remaining brain cell couldn't possibly find this entertaining. Gilbert Shelton must be spinning in his urn! And speaking as the proud owner of a tattoo of Fat Freddie's Cat for over 40 years, I can definitely say that he is NOT a female. That little bit of artistic license alone is grounds for extermination. I suppose Mr. Natural will be making an appearance as a sex therapist? Gag me with a crack pipe. This is just wrong on SO many levels... Kids~ go back to your Super Heros and leave the adults alone, mkay?
