The film was originally intended as a period adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel, but after languishing for almost a year and a half in pre-production, Director John Woosley took the advice of his girlfriend and industry filmmakers to create something new and exciting.
The film is the subject of a book, "Angel of Music: Making an indy film about The Phantom of the Opera," written by the Director.
The scene in which the Phantom is playing the piano then is unmasked by Christine is a reference to the Lon Chaney film.
The film was originally 83 minutes, but proved hard for people not familiar with the book to follow, so was recut to 48 minutes. In addition to being dramatically shorter, the recut also saw actress Lisa Mader being re-voiced by actress Lindsey McKee (uncredited).
Many of the more complicated sequences were filmed against green screen. This was because adequate locations could not be found (i.e. the Paris Opera House) or they were impossible to build (the torture chamber).
