Very exciting short film, with an ending that...... okay, you see it coming. But the plot advancement is very engaging right up until that twist, and done very well despite the familiar narrative. Kudos to the performers--so much is conveyed in body language without any need for dialogue, making one wonder at times why more filmmakers don't still experiment with silent movies.
I realized as I watched that I haven't seen Penelope Cruz in any movies for quite a long while, so it was gratifying to see her in this. (To wit--it seems she's still been quite busy, just with films outside the Hollywood purview.)
The contributions of the crew for this film also must be noted, as the lighting in each shot lends an air of mystery and anticipation to the story.
It's not a very long film, unfortunately; one does wish the narrative could have been padded out more. Who are these characters? Where do they come from; what becomes of them after the plot concludes? Still, even with its shortcomings, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is.
I can appreciate that such films may not be for everyone, but sometimes it's worth watching features outside your comfort zone.
