Stars: Bill Oberst Jr., Michael Pare, Tom Parnell, Mark Savage, Khalimah Gaston, Alexander Pennecke, Pacey Liz Walker, Austin Janowsky, Scot Scurlock, Liz DeCoudres, Kristina Beringer, Eve Jordan Litchfield | Written by Tom Parnell, Mark Savage | Directed by Mark Savage
Back when I reviewed Purgatory Road I said it might be the film to finally put director Mark Savage over in the US market. Instead, he dropped off the map for four years. Now he and co-writer Tom Parnell back with Painkiller, a sequel to their 2016 dark comedy Stressed to Kill which I haven’t seen. That film featured Bill Oberst Jr. as Bill Johnson, a man who takes the doctor’s advice to get rid of stress a bit too literally and starts killing those who annoy him. In Painkiller, originally titled Stressed to Kill: Doctor’s Orders, he’s back, but his killing has a different focus.
Bill is a radio talk jock.

For four years, Black Lightning has positioned itself as a show larger and greater than its titular character’s super powers.
It was a series about hope, the Black community and family. And when the CW series came to an end on Monday, those same themes emerged as the Pierces regained their super powers and took down the bad guys. Before Jeff/Black Lightning could dig his way out of the grave Tobias trapped him in, buried alive, he had to mentally confront his father’s murder as well as the murder he himself committed as a kid, even though...

Black Lightning‘s Jordan Calloway broke the news to his fans that his Painkiller spinoff will not be moving forward at The CW as it defines its 2021 fall schedule. Shorty after The CW revealed what is and isn’t in the works, Calloway spoke fans and followers via Instagram TV.
“Painkiller will not be going forward, so let’s rip that band-aid off now,” he said.
In addition to the Black Lightning spinoff, nun dramedy Our Ladies of Brooklyn will not move forward at The CW.
The spinoff would have seen Calloway reprise his role as the titular character while Black Lightning showrunner Salim Akil will write, exec produce and direct. Set to join the cast were Sibongile Mlambo, Alexander Hodge and James Roch. The planted pilot spinoff aired as the seventh episode of Black Lightning’s fourth season.

Ahead of unveiling its fall schedule, The CW has announced pickups for two new dramas.
The series receiving orders to series are All American: Homecoming and Naomi.
Both shows have been thought to be locks throughout the entire development season.
All American has remained a strong performer for the network in its third season.
All American: Homecoming will focus on Geffri Maya's recurring character, Simone Hicks, as well as a new athlete.
Simone is a tennis hopeful, while the new person is an elite baseball player from Chicago.
Together, they will deal with the high stakes of college sports while also navigating the highs, lows, and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at college.
All American showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll will executive-produce and write the spinoff, while Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Robbie Rogers, who work on the parent series, will be back to work on the offshoot.

One of the CW’s highest-profile pilots, Powerpuff, is not going to series — at least not yet.
Ahead of the CW’s fall 2021 schedule announcement tomorrow, the network has made decisions on the bulk of its six 2021 pilots, handing series orders to Naomi and All American: Homecoming.
Powerpuff, based on the original Cartoon Network animated series, will be reworked and repiloted off-cycle. The four leads — Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault and Donald Faison — as well as other cast and the writers-producers all remain on board the project, from Warner Bros TV/Berlanti Prods.
Tom Swift, a spinoff of Nancy Drew, remains in consideration. The CBS Studios/Fake Empire-produced project did not do a traditional backdoor pilot; instead the character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Nancy Drew episode, and the network also ordered a pilot script. I hear the CW could potentially order a stand-alone...

A(nother) star athlete and a(nother) DC superhero are officially coming to The CW’s lineup. The network has handed series orders to both All American: Homecoming and DC Comics adaptation Naomi, TVLine has learned.
All American: Homecoming, a spinoff of the mothership football drama, will follow young tennis hopeful Simone (played on All American by Geffri Maya) and an elite baseball player from Chicago (Legacies‘ Peyton Alex Smith) as they contend with the high stakes of college sports, all while navigating “the highs, lows and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at a prestigious Historically Black College.”

The Powerpuff Girls won’t be swinging back into action anytime soon.
As The CW moves forward with series orders for its All American: Homecoming spinoff as well as a Naomi comic book series adaptation (executive-produced by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship), sources tell TVLine that the live-action Powerpuff pilot is being reworked and redeveloped off-cycle (meaning, not in time for Fall 2021 consideration).

This Black Lightning article contains spoilers through Season 4, Episode 11.
Black Lightning is sauntering into its final few episodes with the confidence of a keyboard warrior in a woman’s twitter mentions. It’s casual in a way that’s both worrisome and impressive, and one has to wonder if they got it or if they just think they do. Coming into the season, I felt like the writers were ramping up towards a finale that would be explosive, but so much has happened already, the story has plateaued. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy watching, but I’m less invested than I hoped I’d be by this point. Part of that is due to the fact that the Pierces can’t seem to lose, and that’s still the case in “The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two: Trial and Errors.”

Every villain needs theme music. And when Monday’s Black Lightning opened, fans saw Tobias Whale playing Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5” to establish his latest diabolical plan.
Marvin “Krondon” Jones III, who plays the evil genius, did an especially convincing job of making us believe that he could tickle the ivories like that. Alas, he cannot.
