Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. Actor Anne Hathaway has experienced a lot of ups and downs in her career. She confided that she once had brief anxiety over not being cast in anymore future films right before she was hired for a dream role.

Hathaway starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2010 feature Love & Other Drugs. Michael Douglas is one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood. Having gained prominence with his role in the ABC series The Streets of San Francisco, the actor went on to star in several movies and series. After acquiring the rights to the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest from his father, he produced the eponymous film and won his first Academy Award for it as well.

There was a time where hate for Anne Hathaway was confoundingly strong. But what had she really done to deserve all of the backlash? It’s not like she was a one-note star – she balanced crappy rom-comcs with terrific performances in movies like Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married – or was a problem on the set. And yet people had seemingly decided to turn on her sometime in the early 2010s, with a new term, “Hathahate”, being coined. But one who remained faithful in her as an actress and a professional was Christopher Nolan, who cast her as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and again in 2014’s Interstellar. And for that, Anne Hathaway is forever grateful.

In 1982, Jonathan Demme directed a lovely TV movie called “Who Am I This Time?” about a shy actor (Christopher Walken) who can only reveal himself on stage in a variety of disparate roles. It’s an emblematic title and idea for Demme himself, a director whose fascination for the viewer lies in the fact that he’s paradoxically both an auteur with a clear signature and a director who tried on different artistic personalities throughout his career. There’s the exploitation guerrilla of the early ’70s; the humanist drama specialist who made “Melvin and Howard,” “Philadelphia,” and “Rachel Getting Married”; the off-beat hipster comedian; the sensitive documentarian; the live performance specialist; and the steward of well resourced, star-driven literary adaptations and remakes that became Demme’s specialty after his blockbuster success with “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1991.

Rom-coms are a staple of cinema and have been for decades. Right alongside action movies and horror flicks, these tales of romance infused with humor are often there to help anchor any given year at the movies. Yet, they are often viewed as nothing more than popcorn movies; the cinematic equivalent of empty calories. Director Michael Showalter's "The Idea of You" is here to remind us that these movies can be so much more than that. At their best, they can be illuminating experiences that shed meaningful light on the human condition. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by Anne Hathaway and a star-making turn for Nicholas Galitzine, this is the genre at its best.
The film centers on Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who has to chaperone her teenage daughter's trip to the Coachella after her ex-husband bails at the last minute. There, she...

Is there a more exhaustively, and exhaustingly, tackled theme in American independent film than grief?
Festival lineups and arthouses are littered with stories — some somber, some quirk-laden — of loss and trauma, mourning and memory, learning to live and love again after the passing of a child, a spouse, a sibling, a parent. Despite sublime exceptions like Manchester by the Sea and Rachel Getting Married, a dispiriting majority are basically cinematic white noise; there’s a numbing, rinse-and-repeat sameness to all the emotional repression, breakthroughs and release. Trying to take a shortcut to our most painful feelings, these films have the contrary effect of activating our defenses or, worse, our indifference.
Luckily, there are portraits of grief that bulldoze past our resistance, and their own shortcomings, thanks to the sheer force of their sincerity. Ghostlight, from Chicago-based writing-directing team Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson, is one of them. A dramedy about...

Less than two months after she hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the third time, Emma Stone picked up her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for “La La Land,” which soon led to a victory at the 2017 Academy Awards. As the star of “Poor Things,” she is now on a quest for a bookend trophy that would coincide with her recent entry into said NBC sketch series’ prestigious Five-Timers Club. Even if history doesn’t fully repeat itself, just being included in 2024’s lead actress lineup would give her the impressive distinction of being the only performer with multiple same-category Oscar bids directly linked to “SNL” hosting gigs.
Stone’s fifth official “SNL” appearance (not counting three mid-2010s cameos) occurred on December 2, just one day before the seventh anniversary of her fortuitous third outing. She had also previously served as emcee in October 2010, November 2011, and April 2019. This time, she began...

Stardom came quickly for Anne Hathaway when she first began her career. After one season on an unsuccessful sitcom, Hathaway found herself cast as the star of Garry Marshall’s film “The Princess Diaries.” It was kind of a case of art imitating life since in the film a young high school girl finds out she is really a princess and is launched into the public eye.
The same thing pretty much happened to Hathaway. The acting bug was in her system since after all she was named after the wife of William Shakespeare and her mother was a former actress who gave up her career to raise a family. In one great coincidence, her mom’s last role before motherhood was in a national touring company of “Les Misérables.” In that production she was an understudy for the role of Fantine, the doomed factory worker turned prostitute who sings...

Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard have both officially entered the Oscar race for their extraordinary performances in Michel Franco’s “Memory.” However, the awards campaign has announced that Sarsgaard’s riveting turn as a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease will be submitted for supporting actor consideration at the major ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, SAG and Academy Awards. His Oscar-winning co-star Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will vie for lead actress.
Written and directed by Franco, the film was recently acquired by Ketchup Entertainment for North American distribution and will receive an Oscar-qualifying run in December. It premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard received the Volpi Cup for best actor from the Jury, joining the ranks of past honorees such as Brad Pitt (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) and River Phoenix (“My Own Private Idaho”). Thomasin McKenzie has a doozy of a day, the kind she’ll never forget in the first trailer for “Eileen.” Set during a grim 1964 Massachusetts winter, the William Oldroyd-directed noir concerns a young and impressionable secretary who becomes understandably enraptured by a new counselor (Anne Hathaway) at the prison where she works. The trailer doesn’t spell out what diabolical doings will be done, but the implication is Hathaway goes full femme fatale.
Alongside its two top-billed stars, “Eileen” features Shea Whigham, Siobhan Fallon Hogan and Owen Teague (who will soon headline “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” alongside Freya Allen).
Based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name and produced by Fifth Season, “Eileen” debuted to positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon picked up the picture and plans to give it a year end awards season push. Audiences can expect a...

[Editor’s note: Anne Hathaway received a SAG-AFTRA waiver to participate in this interview for “She Came to Me.”]
“Oh, gosh, I have been fearing this moment,” Anne Hathaway said. The Oscar-winning actress is referring to being asked about playing a psychiatrist in back-to-back independent films, “Eileen” and “She Came to Me” who — in each feature — lets out a cathartic, instantly iconic scream in pivotal dramatic moments, sure to be excerpted by the internet (and adoring gay fans like this one).
In Rebecca Miller’s eccentric relationship comedy “She Came to Me,” Hathaway plays Dr. Patricia Jessup-Lauddem, a hyper-organized, Ocd-tending New York psychiatrist whose desire to achieve her “most uncluttered space” leads her on the path to becoming a nun. In William Oldroyd’s darker queer noir “Eileen,” she’s the elegant blond-headed prison counselor Rebecca St. John, whose rebellious air allures younger, impressionable secretary Eileen, played by Thomasin McKenzie.

Hathaway has confided that she hasn’t always been the model actor on set. She believed her role in The Princess Diaries helped foster an unlikable attitude for Hathaway that carried over to her other films. But at the time, the young star wasn’t aware of how intense her behavior could be sometimes.

Hathaway has confided that she hasn’t always been the model actor on set. She believed her role in The Princess Diaries helped foster an unlikable attitude for Hathaway that carried over to her other films. But at the time, the young star wasn’t aware of how intense her behavior could be sometimes.

Is it Oscar time for James Gray? The director’s new film, “Armageddon Time,” is one of the few competition titles debuting at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, so it is also one of the few likely candidates that may have an impact on the Oscar race.
While Gray’s previous work like “The Immigrant,” “The Lost City of Z,” and “Ad Astra” tends to do better with critics than audiences, this new one may end up pleasing both groups. “Armageddon Time” is a memoir-ish drama, set in Queens, New York during the 1980s, seen through the eyes of a sixth-grader named Paul, played by Banks Repeta. His parents are Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, and his grandparents are two-time Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and four-time Tony-nominee Tovah Feldshuh. Weirdly enough, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, figures in the story, and is played by John Diehl. Recent Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain...

James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” a deeply personal look at how the auteur became the auteur we, or at least the French, came to know and love, debuted to warm applause on Thursday. However, the film’s problematic depiction of racial inequalities in the Reagan era may turn off awards voters. Plus, Gray has hardly been a major Oscar contender in the past.
Following the likes of “Roma” (2018) from Alfonso Cuarón and “Belfast” (2021) from Kenneth Branagh, Gray is the latest auteur to bring the story of his childhood to the screen. Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival the day after “Top Gun: Maverick” is no easy feat. But the Cannes crowd ate it up, giving it a seven-minute standing ovation, a signal that international members of AMPAS may find aspects to embrace, notably the performances of Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway.

Television, this spring, has been full of stories of real-life people struggling against the petty matters of their respective realities and reinventing themselves as heroic figures. On “The Dropout,” Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) pushed past the limits of science to declare herself a genius, no matter how unrealistic her putative accomplishments; on “Inventing Anna,” Anna Delvey (Julia Garner) made herself into a wealthy woman of leisure, despite having neither wealth nor, in her endless gyrating calculations, leisure time. And on “WeCrashed,” Rebekah Neumann (Anne Hathaway)…
I know. It seems out-of-place to situate Rebekah as the protagonist of the Apple TV Plus show about the rise and fall of WeWork, the coworking startup founded by her husband Adam (played by Jared Leto). She’s a part of the story of the company’s eventual implosion, but he certainly was at the heart of the news coverage. And yet the clever thing...

“The Man Who Fell To Earth” has never made for light entertainment. Walter Tevis’ 1963 novel set a dire trajectory, and David Bowie’s 1976 film, among many changes, sticks with the sentiment. An alien arrives in America, hoping to save his species from a distant planet, and… things do not go as planned. The arc, after all, is right there in the title (no matter how you read it).
So viewers familiar with the original template may be on their heels a bit after the latest adaptation — a serialized drama from showrunners Alex Kurtzmann and Jenny Lumet — opens in media res. No, the flash-forward isn’t a surprise (please make them stop), but the hopeful promise made by Chiwetel Ejiofor’s outer space visitor speaking to an auditorium of avid fans as a “man” who’s not only well-established, but widely beloved… well, that’s a pivot. “The line must be drawn he-uh!”
Twenty-five years after Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard most emphatically said those words, that moment from the film “Star Trek: First Contact” has become a full-on meme. Multiple clips of it on YouTube have hundreds of thousands of views each. It’s become one of the defining moments for the character. It also means a lot to its director.
“That still holds up as one of my favorite things I’ve ever, ever been involved in as a director,” Jonathan Frakes said.

Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto have signed on to star in Apple’s scripted WeWork project, which has been ordered to series at the streamer.
The series is titled “WeCrashed,” based on the Wondery podcast of the same name. It is described as following the greed-filled rise and inevitable fall of WeWork, one of the world’s most valuable startups, and the narcissists whose chaotic love made it all possible.
Hathaway and Leto are both Oscar winners. Hathaway won the award for best supporting actress for her role in the 2012 film version of “Les Misérables,” while Leto won for best supporting actor for the 2013 drama “Dallas Buyers Club.” Both will serve as executive producers on “WeCrashed” in addition to starring.

It was likely, if not downright inevitable, that in the year of our lockdown, somebody would make a drama called “Locked Down,” about a handful of people in lockdown. The director Doug Liman and the screenwriter Steven Knight conceived their movie on July 1, sold it in September and had completed shooting it, in London, by the end of October. They turned it around nearly as quickly as Steven Soderbergh did “The Girlfriend Experience,” his shoestring guerrilla drama shot at the end of 2008 in response to the global economic meltdown.
In more ways than not, “Locked Down,” which premieres on HBO Max on Jan. 14, feels like one of the modestly budgeted, shot-on-the-fly movies that Soderbergh has been making as palette cleansers ever since “Full Frontal,” in 2002. The film is set over a few days during the first month of the pandemic, and the heart of it unfolds in a townhouse on Portland Street in West London,...
