Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is focused on a season-long quest for ancient secrets from before the dawn of history, there have also been a few episodes that have been almost standalone in structure. From the time loop in “Face the Strange” to the return of the Iss Enterprise in “Mirrors,” Discovery’s final seasons has episodic stories, woven into the bigger arc. And, out of all of season 5, episode 6, “Whistlespeak,” is probably the most standalone of the bunch.
In order to retrieve the latest clue to the Progenitor tech, the USS Discovery jumps to the planet Halem’no, a pre-warp planet. Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal copyright notice to Sun Pictures for unauthorised usage of his music in their latest film ‘Coolie’, starring Tamil megastar Rajnikanth.
Ilaiyaraaja, in the notice, said that the makers of the film had used his musical work in the teaser without authorisation.
Asserting that he is the rightful owner of the music, Ilaiyaraaja said that the makers of the movie did not seek any formal permission from him.
In the notice, Ilaiyaraaja claimed that the teaser of Coolie had a rendition of his song ‘Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa’ from the film ‘Thanga Magan’, also starring Rajinikanth.
This music, according to the petitioner, is remixed in the song ‘Disco’ for Coolie.
The music maestro emphasised that such usage constitutes a clear violation of the Copyright Act (1957).
Furthermore, Ilaiyaraaja pointed out that the director of Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj, had previously utilised his compositions in the movie ‘Vikram’ without obtaining consent.

French actor Gérard Depardieu is being held in police custody in Paris for questioning over sexual assault claims. On Monday, Depardieu, 75, was detained by the 3rd Judicial District Police in France.
Known for the French films Le Monde and Green Card, Depardieu was accused of sexual assault by two women on the set of both films in 2014 and 2021. In January, Depardieu also had a separate sexual assault complaint dropped. The case was brought by actress Hélène Darras, who accused Depardieu of assaulting her in 2008 on the set of the film Disco.
In 2018, Depardieu was also charged with raping actress Charlotte Arnould. Due to lack of evidence, the case was closed in 2019. However, it reopened in the summer of 2020 on another charge of rape and sexual assault.
Depardieu’s history of alleged sexual assaults includes 13 other women who claimed Depardieu had acted inappropriately or harassed them. Darras was one of the 13 women.

French actor Gérard Depardieu will stand trial in October on charges of sexual assault brought by two women who claim the Green Card and Cyrano de Bergerac star assaulted them on set of the film The Green Shutters in 2021, the Paris Public Prosecutor said on Monday.
French police briefly detained Depardieu for questioning on Monday morning. In a note following Depardieu’s release, the prosecutor’s office said the actor was given a summons to appear before the criminal court “for sexual assaults likely to have been committed in September 2021 against two victims, on the set of the film The Green Shutters.”
Multiple media sources, including Agence France-Presse (Afp) and Bfm-tv, reported that the 75-year-old actor has been accused by two separate women of sexual assault. The alleged incidents reported occurred in 2021 — when Depardieu was shooting French film Les Violets vertes (The Green Shutters) — and in 2014 during the making of...

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine earned its position as a favorite series among fans because of its more complex take on the franchise’s themes, thrusting the United Federation of Planets into a huge war that tested its moral compass time and again. But even at the height of the Dominion War, DS9 also found time to follow Jake and Nog’s search for a baseball card and to check in on a holographic Rat Pack lounge singer.
But even within that wide range of possibilities, the season three episode “Facets” stands out as an oddball. Since 2017, Star Trek: Discovery has been the flagship of the reborn Trek franchise on TV. Call it “NuTrek,” call it the continuing mission, call it “Star Trek Phase 3.” It doesn’t really matter. The fact is, Disco has been the focal point of new Trek canon since it hit nearly seven years ago. Now, with season 5, Discovery will be ending its journey, leaving Strange New Worlds and the forthcoming Starfleet Academy as the two live-action Trek shows for the foreseeable future.
But about that canon. As executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently said in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, any new Trek film created outside of the streaming TV shows will have to “have to honor all the canon we’ve created since Discovery.” To be clear, this doesn’t just mean outright new events and characters, but all the ways that...

Actress, director and writer Karine Silla has spoken out in defense of former partner Gérard Depardieu, with whom she has a 31-year-old daughter.
The actor, who was indicted for rape in 2021, has been at the heart of a media storm in France in recent weeks following the broadcast of a France Télévisions documentary probing multiple historic accusations of sexual misconduct against the actor.
Silla, who is the sister of Luc Besson’s wife Virginie Besson-Silla and is now married to actor Vincent Perez, told celebrity magazine Paris Match that she felt compelled to break her silence over the treatment of Depardieu.
“I thought long and hard before speaking out because, as we know, it is difficult for a surgeon to operate on his own child or for a judge to conduct a fair trial if the accused is a member of his family,” she said.

French prosecutors have dismissed a complaint by French actress Hélène Darras claiming she was sexually assaulted by Gérard Depardieu, citing the statute of limitations for the alleged crime.
Darras filed an official complaint against the 75-year-old French star, claiming Depardieu assaulted her on the set of Fabien Onteniente’s film Disco in 2007. Darras made her allegations public in an interview on French TV in December. The interview, combined with raw footage of Depardieu making sexually inappropriate and obscene jokes, triggered a public uproar in France that some have compared to the #MeToo movement that was galvanized by the testimonies of victims of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
Thirteen women have come forward to accuse Depardieu of sexual assault involving incidents spanning two decades. In February 2021, Depardieu was charged with rape and sexual assault allegedly committed in 2018 against actress Charlotte Arnould. French prosecutors have dismissed the complaint filed by French actor Hélène Darras alleging that Gerard Depardieu sexually assaulted her during the filming of “Disco” in 2007.
In a statement sent to Variety, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said the complaint filed on Sept. 10, 2023 will be dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
The prosecutor’s spokesperson said Darras “had decided to file a distinct complaint after being auditioned as a witness during the ongoing investigation stemming from the lawsuit by Charlotte Arnould” in 2018. Depardieu was indicted on rape charges in connection to that case in 2020.
Darras was one of the 13 women who accused Depardieu of sexual misconduct in an investigative story that ran in Mediapart in April 2023. Spanish journalist Ruth Baza also said she had filed an official complaint against the actor in Spain after being allegedly assaulted during an interview in Paris in 1995, which is beyond the 20-year statute of limitation in France.

A decade ago, Gerard Depardieu played a character inspired by Dominique Strauss-Kahn — the disgraced former head of the International Monetary Fund who was accused of assaulting a hotel maid — in Abel Ferrara’s “Welcome to New York.” In an ironic twist, the iconic French actor has now become the poster boy for the country’s #MeToo movement, having been charged with rape and faced with over a dozen sexual assault allegations.
But the French remain divided over him due to his profile as a mascot of the country’s cinematic history. He’s starred in over 150 films, including classics such as Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” François Truffaut’s “Le Dernier Metro” and Bertrand Blier’s “Going Places.” However, the tide is starting to shift — while French President Emmanuel Macron refused to revoke his Legion of Honor, the Paris wax museum went ahead and removed his statue on Dec.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 6 of “The Masked Singer,” “Harry Potter Night,” which aired Oct. 25 on Fox.
The timing couldn’t have been better: With Halloween approaching, it was a spooky “Harry Potter”-themed episode of “The Masked Singer” this week, so it was only appropriate that “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey would be the next celebrity to be unmasked in Season 10.
Posey was revealed to be Hawk, after this week performing “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” by The Police. “I have this checklist of random weird things that you only get to experience once in a lifetime,” Posey told Variety. “And this fit right in with that. This is just a fun, interesting, random, bizarre experience that I was just completely down to do. It’s also challenging. I’ve always been sort of awkward when it comes to choreographed dancing.

“The Masked Singer” goes whole Hogwarts on this week’s episode with a “Harry Potter” theme, and Variety has a first look. Below, panelist Ken Jeong — dressed as “Harry Potter” character Professor Snape — attempts to figure out Sea Queen’s identity.
The October 25 episode, which airs as usual at 8 p.m. Et on Fox, follows each contestant — Sea Queen, Hawk, Husky and Tiki — as they are assigned a Hogwarts house from the Sorting Hat. Each contestant will then perform a song in theme with the week’s episode, like “Love Potion No. 9” and “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.”
Also guest starring on the episode: Adrienne Bailon-Houghton (Flamingo from Season 2), who opens the show with a performance of “I Put a Spell On You.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 5 of “The Masked Singer,” “A Celebration of Elton John,” which aired Oct. 18 on Fox.
Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote the track “Philadelphia Freedom” in 1975 at the behest of tennis icon Billie Jean King (whose team was the Philadelphia Freedoms). So, it was wildly appropriate that King performed the song on Wednesday during “A Celebration of Elton John” on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”
King performed “Philadelphia Freedom” as the Royal Hen — and the fact that we know she was on the show means that, alas, she was also the next celebrity to be unmasked on “Singer.”
“A true trail blazer, she is famous for championing equal opportunities for all, and has made it her royal mission to be a voice for the voiceless,” a “Masked Singer” voiceover shared in giving the hints to whom the Royal Hen might be.

As “The Masked Singer” panelist Nicole Scherzinger returns to London’s West End this month, starring as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, the show has found a suitable substitute: Singer/songwriter Rita Ora. Ora, who is no stranger to the format as a panelist for “The Masked Singer UK,” will take the U.S. “Masked Singer” panelist chair alongside Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg and Robin Thicke throughout Season 11, now shooting (and set to air in midseason).
Of course, Scherzinger will still be seen this fall on Season 10 of “The Masked Singer,” which taped earlier this year and returned with a special episode this past Sunday (featuring the unmasking of Demi Lovato). “The Masked Singer” returns for its regular Season 10 on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. Et.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 10 season premiere of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Sept. 10 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” kicked off its 10th season on Sunday night with a special episode — and a lotta Lovato. Demi Lovato as “Anonymouse” was the first celebrity unmasked this season — although there’s an asterisk there. Lovato didn’t appear as part of the competition (otherwise they absolutely would have continued into future weeks), but as a one-off.
Lovato, of course, got their start at Disney — a.k.a. the Mouse House — via the Disney Channel movie “Camp Rock” and series “Sonny with a Chance.” So the “Anonymouse” character itself was most definitely a hint to Lovato’s identity under the mask.
Lovato opened the show with a strong take on “What About Love,” as originally performed by Heart. “Just like Michelle Obama, Oprah and Angelina Jolie,...

It’s a sunny afternoon in Los Angeles, but inside a nondescript bar in Hollywood’s Pendry West Hotel, a lavish champagne-topped celebration, fit for the late hours of the night, is well underway. For just one day, the space has become a stand-in for the belle de nuit-inspired Voltaire nightclub, an intimate venue located in Las Vegas’ famed Venetian resort — and it’s all for the Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue.

It’s nearly time for the return of “The Masked Singer,” which means it’s time to meet some of this year’s contestants. And TheWrap can exclusively reveal two of them to you now: Hibiscus and S’more.
Yes, S’more is literally a life-sized s’more from a campfire, complete with a Snidely Whiplash-esque mustache, and Hibiscus does look freshly plucked from a garden. You can see the costumes in full in the photos at the bottom of this post.
Ok, you’re back? Great, let’s speculate. Obviously, the gender of the costume doesn’t always match the gender of the singer inside it. You might recall that last season, “Twisted Sister” singer Dee Snider competed in a female doll costume, complete with heels. So, for now at least, there’s no way to even guess at who might be under the flower and fireside snack costumes.

Pulp stopped in their hometown of Sheffield for a pair of shows on their reunion tour over the weekend. To make the second night even more special, they closed out the set by debuting an unreleased song called “Hymn of the North.”
“I can promise you that no one has ever heard this song except for us on this stage,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker said to the crowd while introducing the performance. “Actually that is a lie. It’s a song — a kind of version of it was featured in a play by a guy called Simon Stephens. And it’s called ‘Hymn of the North.’ So we are in the North, so we thought you should hear it first, Ok.”
Cocker continued by sharing that the band had “some lively discussions” about whether they should play the song live. “There’s a lot that could go wrong with it — I’m playing the piano,...

The Last Days of Disco. Barely a few minutes into Whit Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco (1998), a young Manhattanite refers to the city’s bustling nightclub scene as a full-blown movement—partying is not a lifestyle nor a hobby, but a kind of mission. His name is Josh (Matt Keeslar), a recent graduate who still cringes at the “social wasteland” of his college years, and evidently thought clubs would fix that overnight. “What I found so encouraging,” he tells a pal, “was the idea that when the time came to have a social life, there’d be all these places where people could go to.” Except the right places are impossible to get into. Ironically, the disco enthusiast has never actually stepped foot inside a disco, and as he sneaks his way into one of New York’s most iconic, he marvels at the neon-lit world as if...

He has never cared if his words offend, even if they alienate his audience. Richards said a certain group of fans pissed him off when they criticized the Stones’ album Some Girls and the song “Miss You.”
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards | George Rose/Getty Images Keith Richards was pissed off with purists who called The Rolling Stones sellouts over ‘Some Girls’
The Rolling Stones practically created the blueprint for edgy, boozy, blues-based hard rock. They reached their apex between 1968 and 1973. Their five albums — Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., and Goats Head Soup — produced a slew of glowing reviews and signature songs.
Understandably, the band’s pace slowed down after that.

Kylie Minogue has seen those “Padam Padam” memes… and she loves them.
The singer chatted to Et Canada Pride’s Dallas Dixon, with the host commenting on how much love the single had been getting online.
As Dixon pointed out the memes, Minogue replied, “Stop it! No, don’t stop it!”
Dixon insisted: “I cannot with the memes for this. Are you on Twitter just laughing your butt off at these like I am?” as Minogue responded, “I am! I don’t know if this has ever happened to me!
“People are So funny and so clever and I think it’s only just begun, so yeah, I love seeing them!!”
