In the 1981 TV movie The Intruder Within, Medical Center's Chad Everett plays the commander of an oil rig who inadvertently discovers some prehistoric eggs. One of the eggs hatches, releasing a snake-like malevolent creature that begins to hunt down the crew one by one. Directed by Peter Carter (Rituals), The Intruder Within has the dubious distinction of being one of the first full-on Alien rip-offs on television or film. (Roger Corman’s first attempt, the surreal Galaxy of Terror, would be released theatrically later that year.) It’s a typical early-eighties television yarn with flat visuals, story points timed for commercial breaks and very little onscreen violence. Joseph Bottoms (The Black Hole) is the “Ash” of the piece, attempting to study the life form at any price. There's also a “chest burster” counterpart which is shown,...

Here's something I haven't seen in many a moon: a WWII movie that pits good 'ol cigar chomping G.I.s against leatherclad Nazis while the bigger theater rages in the background. Battle Force is neither in the vein of a sweeping epic or over the top borderline satire; it's straight meat and potatoes entertainment, and sometimes, that may be all you need for a good time.
Battle Force is loosely based on a real special forces unit of American and Canadian soldiers whose job was not that different from, say, a bunch of reputationally compromised children from unmarried parents. They do the nasty jobs, the suicide missions, the ones where extreme force is required.
The film takes place in 1943, on the eve of the invasion of Fascist and Nazi occupied Sicily.

2011 brought a lot of great horror films. From Stake Land to A Lonely Place to Die, there were a lot of films to watch and enjoy. 2011 also served up a lot of misery as well. Here at 28Dla, this reviewer has learned to dodge a few bullets in the movie world. Admittedly, this reviewer skipped Fred Andrews' Creature in theatres and the latest forced production of the Hellraiser series, titled Hellraiser: Revelations was also missed thanks to some early reviews. However a few films slipped under the radar or were shipped to the 28Dla HQ with little warning or previous info'. These are some of those films.
Some of the elements that made a terrible film this year were the inability to create tension or to create interesting characters. Without tension or thrills what is a horror film? As well, not providing any backstory for a character is a...

Scott Martin, who previous wrote and starred in the well-received horror flick The Rig, here turns his hand to directing and the war genre with a film set in the aftermath of the allied invasion of France in the summer of 1944 a squad of American paratroopers struggle to carry out a mission only one of them knows the real reason for undertaking. The crew of an offshore oil rig unwittingly disturb a creature which makes its way on to the rig and quickly starts to work its way through the crew. A tropical storm has hit, which caused most of the crew to be evacuated. Can the remaining few, with communications cut off, survive until the storm breaks and help arrives?

An initial word of warning about that poster. The creature that is on the loose in this film bears no resemblance to that set of jaws. The poster makes it look like some sort of leviathan is surfacing to swallow the rig whole, whereas what we actually have is a man in a black suit, filmed in snapshots and at quirky angles to make it look like, well, something other than a guy in a black suit. This is basement-budget film-making of the first order, with all of the problematic connotations...

Wow, what an absolutely dismal film. Anchor Bay Entertainment continues to distribute some of these lackluster horror titles e.g. Sharktopus, Altitude for no apparent reason. There latest disaster is more of a horror soap opera, than anything else. The Rig has an interesting premise, with elements such as: a hurricane styled storm coming in, an isolated oil rig, and creatures released from deep below. Yet, the film delivers a mish-mash of bad acting, terrible musical compositions and plot holes so big that a huge drill could not fill them in. Unfortunately, those sent to The Rig will soon be looking for their first boat back to Florida.
Several oil workers set up a new drill site, only to unleash a sea borne terror. They look much like a cheap knock off of the creatures from the Alien franchise.

The Beastmaster goes berserk in this stunning trailer for supernatural horror flick, House Hunting! The indie thriller originally caught my attention for three reasons. First, its premise of two families caught in a house that won't let them leave offered an intriguing old-school premise. Second, it's got a pretty odd ensemble cast in Marc Singer (V, Eagle Eye), Art Lafleur (Field of Dreams, The Rig, Cobra), Rebekah Kennedy (Season of the Witch, Creature) and Paul McGill (Man on Wire, Fame). and third, it's the directorial debut of Dp Eric Hurt, who most recently worked on a scifi flick we're dying to see called called Atlantis Down which is premiering at London Scifi Film Festival right away.
Synopsis:
If the American dream for most families is buying a house then for the two families headed to what they think is a simple open house, their dream is about to become a nightmare.

Quick nudity report: Carmen Perez can be seen topless in The Rig, which is avilable now on DVD from Anchor Bay. As a hurricane rages outside, the small but experienced crew of an oil drilling rig settles in to ride out the storm. Isolated on the rig, their calm is short lived when a crew member goes missing and an extensive search proves futile. Slowly, they discover that a deadly creature is stalking the skeleton crew, eliminating them one by one. Surrounded by nothing but raging ocean, their communication severed and no way off the rig, the roughnecks try to survive the stormy night with an unrelenting force of death hunting them down.

Peter Atencio is the director behind The Rig starring William Forsythe (Halloween), Seah D' Laine, Art Lafleur, Marcus T. Paulk, Stacey Hinnen and Dan Benson. The Rig finds the crew of an oil rig being picked off one by one by a sea monster. With The Rig, Peter Atencio has delivered a sleek, polished looking film on a tiny budget that has been picked up for release in the Us by Anchor Bay Entertainment. We wanted to know some about Peter Atencio's thought process while making The Rig, his first feature length film as director solo. Here is what he had to say.
So who is Peter Atencio and what are you all about?
I'm a director in Los Angeles, and I get excited about making entertaining stuff, in whatever form it finds itself.
How did The Rig come about? What was it about this project that attracted you to it?...

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.

Releasing a horror movie on an oil rig almost seems like poor taste given the circumstances as of late, but that hasn’t stopped Anchor Bay from scheduling Peter Atencio’s straight-to-video monster flick “The Rig” for October 5th. And while the film appears to be nothing more than yet another excursion into the “creature killing human in an isolated setting” genre, the picture gets several few extra points in the cool department for prominently featuring William Forsythe in the trailer. I’m not sure how big of a role he plays in the actual story, but at least he’s in the trailer. After all, anyone who understands the fundamentals of marketing should be well-versed in the Law of Forsythe. Speaking of which, here’s the plot in a nutshell: As a hurricane rages outside, the small but experienced crew of an oil drilling rig settles in to ride out the storm.

Updated with artwork. Special features will include an audio commentary with director Peter Atenscio and producer James D. Benson and a behind-the-scenes featurette. The Peter Atencio-directed The Rig is reportedly hitting DVD this fall from Anchor Bay and we've got the trailer to share below. The film, which falls in line with Deepstar Six and Leviathan , stars William Forsythe, Art Lafleur, Marcus Paulk, Serah D'Laine and Stacey Hinnen. The Rig BannerHow appropriate is this? An oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is threatened to go down and take the oil workers in to the depths. Bp will not be getting all the publicity for oil spills as the relatively new director Peter Atencio brings The Rig to DVD in 2010, with help from Anchor Bay Studios. William Forsythe (Dear Mr. Gacy), Art Lafleur ("The Mentalist"), Marcus Paulk (Take the Lead), Serah D'Laine (Parasomnia) and Stacey Hinnen (Sharpshooter) will be those trying to stay alive as a mysterious creature goes about his/her/its business of murder. Watch out Bp there is someone even worse on the prowl.
The synopsis for The Rig here:
"As a hurricane rages outside, the small but experienced crew of an oil drilling rig settles in to ride out the storm. Isolated on the rig, their calm is short lived when a crew member...

The Bp oil spill disaster has left me wondering how long it's going to take before we see a wave of monster movies and disaster flicks centered around the subject. The makers of The Rig may have gotten lucky that they already had a creature feature in the can about a monster loose on an oil rig because now they'll be the first out of the gate when Anchor Bay spills the film onto DVD this October.
Filmed on location aboard an actual oil rig in Morgan City, Louisiana, which right now is practically ground zero for the Bp oil washing ashore, Peter Atencio directs from a script he co-wrote with novice writers C.W. Fallin and Scott Martin with creature effects courtesy of Davis Fandino and Matt Mastrella (both AvP movies and Spider-Man 3). The venerable character actors William Forsythe (Out for Justice, The Rock)and Art Lafleur (Field of Dreams,...

It was nearly two years ago that I first told you of a creature feature called The Platform starring William Forsythe and Art Lafleur about a crew trapped aboard an oil rig with a mutant monster. Been so long I had completely forgotten about the film until the other day when I decided to check on the status of it. At the time information was scarce. Now I find the film has a new title - The Rig, a new website, and a new trailer.
"When a tropical storm forces an offshore drilling company to evacuate non-essential personnel from the "Charlie" oil rig, the small but experienced crew left behind settles in to ride out the storm. Isolated on the rig, their routine night is interrupted when a crew member goes missing and an extensive search proves futile. Slowly, they discover that a deadly creature is stalking the crew, eliminating them one by one.
