Shari Redstone is emphatic: ViacomCBS has plenty of resources and the scale to compete in the new world order for media giants.
“We absolutely have enough scale,” Redstone said Friday morning during her Q&a held as part of the Paley Center for Media’s International Council Summit in New York. “We have an incredible library. We have incredible IP. We spend over $13 billion on content. We can compete with the best of them.”
Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Viacom and CBS, was pressed by moderator Aryeh Bourkoff, chief of LionTree investment bank, which was a key adviser on the Viacom-cbs merger, about the more than 20% drop in the stocks for CBS and Viacom since the long-awaited merger was completed in mid-August. The conventional wisdom on the Street is that investors believe the company isn’t big enough to remain a major player in global media.

ViacomCBS will continue to strike major content deals with third parties as well as keeping some content in-house as the streaming wars heat up.
CEO Bob Bakish revealed its “multi-pronged” approach when asked whether the company should “pick a lane” on Viacom’s last investor call as a standalone company.
This comes after a number of major streaming deals across the spectrum for both Viacom and CBS. Earlier today, Paramount licensed the rights to a Beverly Hills Cop sequel to Netflix and the Svod service also struck a multi-year licensing deal with Nickelodeon for kids content including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, while HBO acquired the streaming rights to South Park.
On the other hand, earlier this week CBS CEO Joe Ianniello noted the addition of children’s programming to CBS All Access.

Spike Lee is set to direct a big-screen adaptation of Ron Wimberly’s 2012 graphic novel, “Prince of Cats,” for Legendary Entertainment. Described as “the B-side to Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’,” the story focuses on Tybalt, the son of Lady Capulet’s brother, Juliet’s short-tempered cousin, Romeo’s rival, and a character from Shakespeare’s tragedy.
Lee confirmed the project with IndieWire.
Set in the 1980s, in “Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn,” Lee’s favorite domain, the official synopsis for the novel reads: “‘Prince of Cats’ is played at an eighties block party in a NY where underground sword dueling blossomed alongside hip-hop, punk, disco and no wave. It’s the story of the minor players with Tybalt at the center.”
After being out of print for four years, the novel was re-worked and re-released in 2016.
The adaptation has been in development since July 2018, when it was announced...
