Los Angeles' Bunker Hill neighborhood was a popular film noir location during the 1950s, and this fascinating cinematic time capsule shows why. Once inhabited by the city's 'best' families, Bunker Hill had become more of a working-class area by the time Kent Mackenzie shot this film while attending USC. From the 'more things change' department: in 1956, Bunker Hill was being threatened by redevelopment; we even see some of the characterless, soulless planning documents depicting the skyscrapers that were going to replace the Victorian houses that dotted the neighborhood. I'm no expert on LA history, but I'm assuming most of those plans tragically came to fruition. This is a wonderful short film celebrating everyday life in a close-knit community. And yes...we do get to see the famous Angels Flight trams.
