Jack Lemmon plays Ashley who has lost his wife and seems to have lost his zest for living.
Ashley is neglecting his daughter who is being looked after by his sister. He has lost interest in his work and entered a world of self pity.
Ashley also thinks that two men are following him around. In fact he is paranoid that they mean danger and this further infuriates his daughter as she cannot have a picnic in the park with her dad.
I thought at first this was a serious look at madness as Ashley certainly looks like a man who is falling into pieces. Maybe the men were a figment of his imagination.
Jack Lemmon gets away from comedy and shows his serious side which he would do so in movies like The China Syndrome.
At the end the story comes together as a thriller. The men do plan to cause harm but to another man living nearby who crossed the mob.
At least Ashley looks forward to living once again by the end of it.
