- With Gideon still missing, Hotchner puts in for a transfer and Prentiss tenders her resignation, but both are drawn back to work by a serial killer targeting women in a particularly heartless fashion.
- Aaron Hotchner is contemplating a transfer to another unit, and Emily Prentiss is quitting the FBI, and Jason Gideon is missing. The team, led shakily by Director Erin Strauss, is called to Milwaukee to investigate a serial killer who has had 5 female victims. Horribly, it seems that the killer is using his young son to lure in the victims. As Aaron rejoins the team, along with Emily, this puts his marriage on shaky ground. We learn the fate of Jason Gideon, as this was the final episode starring Mandy Patinkin, who has left the show.—Dave Goldhirsch
- Following the case at the Flagstaff, Arizona college and the case with Frank the serial killer, Gideon, questioning both his ability and commitment, decides to take a break from work in the BAU, but has not told anyone verbally and as such has basically deserted his job. But he knows that a specific colleague will be tasked with looking for him, that person who will find the note Gideon has written explaining as much as he can in his mindset. Already on shaky ground with Strauss, Hotch is suspended for two weeks because of what happened in Flagstaff. This time allows him, in consultation with Haley, to decide that he will request a transfer to a "9 to 5" job. And Prentiss is also absent, she, who could not take the directive from Strauss to spy on Hotch, is resigning from the FBI to pursue a foreign service job. Specifically with Hotch not leading the team, Strauss temporarily fills in as unit head to accompany J.J., Morgan and Reid to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where young mothers have been abducted and murdered, their heart ripped out of their body. Looking at the timing of the abductions and the body dumpings, the BAU know that the scheduling coincides with school times and thus suspect the unsub may work in the school system. Their suspicions are redirected when they see on a surveillance system that one of the victims was lured away by who looked to be a lost young boy. Regardless of their status, will Hotch (despite Haley's disdain for what the unit has done to her home life) and Prentiss be able to stay away knowing that the BAU is short staffed on this case? And Strauss, despite her hard line, may change her entire view of the unit by being out in the field with them.—Huggo
