A response to jaimeebrummitt's question
juliathelaramite11 April 2021
I don't see any way to reply, but I think I know the answer to your question, and even if you don't see this maybe others with the same question will.

I think the implication is that she's having an affair. The person calls during daytime hours when he would normally be at work so it's probably safe to call home. When he answers, the guy panics and hangs up, and immediately calls her on her cell phone. Could be wrong, but based on the context (him not being home enough, marriage suffering) and the immense tension between the two when her phone rings, I'm pretty sure that's what's happening.

Changes often mean great pain - and some annoying moments too!
mcguin7129 June 2015
Following the recent issues surrounding the unit, and notably his personal loss, Jason Gideons whereabouts and future remain a mystery to the rest of the team. In the fallout Aaron Hotchner is contemplating transferring to another unit, whilst Emily Prentiss quits the FBI. Whilst I'll miss Mandy Patinkins Gideon as a character I always thought he was somewhat light weight as a team member, although to be fair the whole group is a collection of oddballs and brains with a little common sense thrown in just to make it plausible.

Meanwhile life must continue and Director Erin 'I hate the team so why am I in this job?' Strauss steps up to lead the team but fails to make a good impression, especially in the field when called in to investigate a serial killer in Milwaukee.

When it become clear that the killer is using his young son to lure in the victims, and in response to the obvious team dynamic and trust issues both Aaron and Emily join the team, possibly for the last time, in order to see up the investigation and hopefully reach the final victim whilst she is still alive. .... The changes in team dynamic were somewhat grating, though admittedly some of this is deliberate on the behalf of the writers in showing that the upheavals do have consequences especially with the disruptive influence of the new director who is obviously not cut out for BAU case work. .... I don't feel this was a great episode but it was also quite workmanlike and did the necessary moves towards the post-Gideon era. I don't like the Director and whilst I feel the team really needs to be less 'Jet Setting' it seems to be too much of a 'administrative' new face.

A solid if unimpressive - 7

Not bad at all considering the circumstances
TheLittleSongbird10 July 2016
"In Name and Blood" had difficult circumstances around it, with Mandy Patinkin's abrupt departure, team members debating their future and potential career moves, a different director and a different character replacing Gideon at last minutes.

By all means it is not perfect, but considering the circumstances this is a very good job. Gideon's departure, like Patinkin's, was abrupt and it did hurt the team dynamic (but with the circumstances it was inevitable, and it was actually still a worthy send-off at the time, though an even more effective one was done in "Nelson's Sparrow") and at this particular point Edward Allen Bernero's writing showed more experience than his direction.

Haley Hotcher is also very unlikable in this episode (understand the frustration, but was there really the need to be so nasty?) and Erin Strauss really doesn't fit in yet and her chemistry with the rest of the BAU never gels and almost non-existent in places, also didn't warm to her at times almost dictatorial leadership either.

However, there are some delightful character moments, especially Reid's reading of Gideon's letter left for him in one of the most poignant scenes of the show, Garcia's priceless "talk dirty to me" line without realising that Strauss was on the other end of the line which was one of the show's funniest moments and Hotch warning Garcia that the computer glitches mustn't happen again.

"In Name and Blood" is well made and well-scored, with some nice tight writing that balances humour, pathos, intelligent case profiling and tense mystery effectively. The story itself is solidly paced, and while not an exceptional, quite gut-wrenching, affecting or creepy episode (pretty ordinary) there is still a good amount of tension and suspense, the murders are suitably disturbing and the unsub and his son are nicely written characters.

The acting is very good from all the regulars, especially from those who have the standout character moments (so Kirsten Vangsness, Thomas Gibson and Matthew Gray Gubler), apart from a bland and cold Jayne Atkinson which is a lot to do with how Strauss is written. Eddie Cibrian is effective as Joe.

Overall, not bad at all, in fact surprisingly good. 7.5/10 Bethany Cox

Fantastic character work

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

Although I thought the plot of this episode was particularly intense and scary it's the team that made this episode so fantastic.

I thought that the plot was very intense and it balanced the detective work and the time spent with the victim very well. I thought it was very well written and pieces together so that it was all cohesive in the end. And this particular unsub was pretty horrible And using his own son made him even more despicable. Although I think the capture of the father was a little bit rushed I didn't think that it was any less intense as he was trying to convince his son to shoot Prentiss which is horrible yet so greatly dramatic.

But the most amazing thing about this episode was definitely all the characters. I love how García did everything she could to keep Hotchner and Prentiss on team knowing they wouldn't be able to resist another case. I thought Hotchner it was absolutely incredible as you see his sacrificing he does constantly to be with and help the team and we saw how destructive it is to his home life to the point that his wife left him. Prentiss is incredible as she'd rather quit the BAU then ruin in the careers of her teammates who she trusts. Morgan trying so hard to get Aaron to help knowing that's where he belongs. Reid being concerned about gideon the whole episode only to find the letter that was written to him by Gideon in the previous episode which was an excellent way for Gideon to leave.

I'm incredibly sad to see Gideon go but it felt very natural and well done.

Also love seeing that horrible supervisor Strauss realizing how hard Hotchner's job is and why some mistakes will always be made.

I think one of the best scenes is also one of the worst scenes as Hotchner and his wife argue over Hotchner leaving. Of course I think she should be supportive of his career and aspirations but at the same time I'm incredibly sympathetic to her so I found the scene very frustrating yet very realistic.

And I think the camaraderie between Hotchner and Emily was great in this episode is Hotchner was aware of what Strauss wanted her to do and with her quitting they finally fully gain trust in each other which has been a struggle for the last season.

Maybe my only critique of the episode would be them not focusing on Gideon being unheard from for two weeks but they do show concern through Reid and that they likely know where he was so that's just being a little bit picky.

Overall a really great episode with a really great send off for one of my favorite characters.

Great episode
jaimeebrummitt6 April 2021
I just have one question.

What was with the phone call Hotchner got at home when he was reviewing the file Garcia gave him? When nobody responded on the other end and he hung up Haley received a call on her cell phone seconds later????.....

Was that meant to be an opening for a later story and then they trashed it?.....

Kinda weird that it was never explained.

Strauss is a BIG mistake
keysam-0261014 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The character of Strauss was a TERRIBLE idea. The show did not need this sort of drama & apart from that she's a ghastly example of a supposed management level person. Her "don't question me again" crack to JJ is absolutely unacceptable. If the FBI really has any managers like this, they should be ashamed.

Later on in the show, making Rossi fall for her was even more egregious.

Hotch's wife is terrible too (& clearly having an affair judging by the hang-up phone calls) but this is old news.

Really hate the "new director" as she is an ... then top with, hotches wife, as this epi really makes me dislike her too.

She knew who she married and his job and was ok with it before, but now ?!?

It is hinted at that she is the one unfaithful, the phone call(s), to start fighting with her husband because of his job to hide this, then telling him to "kiss good bye his son", really ?!?

The b director, the unfaithful b wife... ok we know whats his name just didnt turn up for work, must be nice to just not show and still... but anyway, his character was ok for what was, and well, went with as show was still not bad, and the new ones coming and going... though have not watched since it ended, as heard few things re... this epi, well not bad, just, repeating, some, the 2 characters, one hated right from start the other, well not bad acting to make ya hate who they are playing.

Question.... when looking for the little boy, instead of just describing the boy to all the guidance counselors ,why didn't they also show them pictures from the video of the boy talking to one of the victims in the store? Seem like very bad writing/consistency?
