The book Margaret is reading as she sits on the couch is "Last Voyage" by Ann Davison, published in 1953.
Jim's hat that Kathy uses for Mr. Quigley's nest is a Homburg, brought to popularity by King Edward VII of England in the 1890s. Edward VII discovered the hat while traveling through Bad Homburg, Germany, the eponymous venue where the hat has its origin as a hat for hunting, but, after the 1890s and Edward VII's influence, it became quite fashionable for formal occasions, sometimes replacing the more formal top hat.
Kathy names the bird Mr. Quigley because, as she says, it looks like the man she calls Mr. Quigley at the local Drug Store.
