Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study, where he finds Tipton seated in a high-backed chair, manipulating an astronomical device. Only his right arm is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, I have always been fascinated by the fact that we always see the same side of the moon. What do you think the other side looks like, Mike?

Michael Anthony : Well, I'd assume it's pretty much like the side we can see.

    John Beresford Tipton : Precisely.

    [Chuckles]

John Beresford Tipton : Yet until they see that for themselves, there are people who'll never be sure they haven't missed something wonderful.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike. Maybe this will expose the unknown face of the moon.

  • Barbara Lydon : [Anthony enters the public library, which has just closed for the day]  I'm sorry, sir, the library is closed. We'll be open at nine in the morning.

Michael Anthony : I, uh, don't want to borrow a book. I'm looking for a Miss Barbara Lydon.

Barbara Lydon : Well, I'm Barbara Lydon.

Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase]  This is a personal matter, Miss Lydon. My name is Michael Anthony. I have something to give you.

    Barbara Lydon : Well, I haven't ordered anything. I don't know you.

Michael Anthony : [Removing a check from his briefcase and holding it up]  Please, Miss Lydon, just look at this. It's a cashier's check.

Barbara Lydon : [Gazing at check]  One million dollars!

    Michael Anthony : And it's yours, tax-free.

Barbara Lydon : One million dollars?

Michael Anthony : [Returning to his briefcase to withdraw a paper]  It's yours on one condition. You are not to tell anyone, with the exception of your husband when you marry, where you received the money or the amount. If you violate this condition, whatever remains of the million must be returned.

Barbara Lydon : Why me? I mean, what have I done to deserve this, and who would give it to me?

Michael Anthony : I'm afraid I can't answer those questions.

Barbara Lydon : Weill, do I have to do something for it?

Michael Anthony : [Presenting the document]  Oh yes. Sign this agreement.

Barbara Lydon : [while signing the pledge]  You mean I can do anything I want with this money, anything at all?

Michael Anthony : [Reclaiming the document and placing it in his briefcase]  Anything.

Barbara Lydon : Mr. Anthony, this is my ticket, my ticket to the world!

Michael Anthony : [Smiling]  Bon voyage., Miss Lydon.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was executive secretary to the fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, the 60,000-acre estate on which Mr. Tipton lived out the last years of his life. Here he had ample time to indulge his many hobbies, the strangest of which was his habit of giving way to a total stranger the anonymous gift of $1,000.000.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a case history, to the viewers]  The recipient of Mr. Tipton's latest gift lived in the town of Freeman Center, Nebraska. Her name was Barbara Lydon, and she was employed by the public library.
