There are two twisty thrillers directed by filmmakers named Shyamalan heading to theaters in the coming months and the filmmakers promise “unease” and “wonder.”
It wasn’t intentional, said M. Night Shyamalan, sitting down for a conversation with his daughter and fellow filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan.
“It just played out this way,” he began, recounting the filmmakers’ conversations with Warner Bros., which is releasing both films. “It was just: What is the best date for that movie and what is the best day for this movie? And it turned out it was in the same summer.”
First up will be the June 14 release of “The Watchers,” the feature film directorial debut from Ishana Night Shyamalan, starring Dakota Fanning as part of a group of humans trapped in the woods who are visited by a mysterious audience every night. That will be followed by the Aug. 9 debut of her dad M.

You might often feel like you’re already living through an apocalyptic nightmare, but I assure you that E.L. Katz’s new culty survival horror Azrael is way weirder and more wild than anything you’re doomscrolling through late at night. Written by Simon Barrett, and starring genre badass Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Azrael is a blood-soaked and buck wild revenge tale set in a fractured world. It’s got everything you could ask for in a post-apocalyptic horror flick. It’s got cults, it’s got shotguns, it’s got seething anger, and (best of all) it’s got weird hellscape creatures lurking in the forest that rip people to shreds...

I don’t think there’s too many bigger fans of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise than myself. I’ve loved all three that have come before V/H/S/94 – they feature a range of brilliant directors and actors in original and gory short films. I loved that this newest movie would be hitting Shudder in time for Halloween.
We start with what is the wraparound segment ‘Holy Hell’ directed by Knives and Skin director Jennifer Reed. It shows a S.W.A.T. team slowly working their way through a building which is showing on various monitors or TVs, the videotapes that lead to each other segment.
And the first segment is ‘Storm Drain’ directed by newcomer Chloe Okuno. Shown as a TV news reporter and her single camera guy following up on a local mythical creature. There’s...

Possession horror is on trend this year, and that looks to continue with Judgment of the Dead. THR reports that the upcoming horror movie will star Mohamed Karim and give an Egyptian spin on the possession formula.
Karim will star and produce Judgment of the Dead. Stuart Ford’s AGC will co-produce with Karim’s Mk Global Entertainment.
The actor will play “Dr. Sherif Hawass, a renowned Egyptologist who must save the world, and the woman he loves, after an artifact he unearths releases an ancient evil.”
Thomas M. Hewlett wrote the screenplay for Judgement of the Dead based on Karim’s original idea.
Interestingly, Judgment of the Dead was initially announced in 2021, under the title Book of Chaos, as a Dark Castle Entertainment feature. Dark Castle initially launched in 1998 by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler and most recently produced Simon Barrett’s directorial debut, Seance, and last year’s Orphan: First Kill.

Last year, director Rebekah McKendry impressed our reviewer Tyler Nichols with the horror film Glorious, which took place in a rest stop bathroom. (You can read Tyler’s 8/10 review at This Link.) Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and it’s going to be released through the Shudder streaming service very soon… just not as soon as we had previously heard. You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.
Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.
While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

The newest episode of the Apple TV+ original series Servant dropped on Jan. 27, and, as usual, the ending left fans wondering about everything they just watched. In one of the final scenes of Servant Season 4, “Séance,” audiences caught a glimpse of a menacing black cloud-like entity. However, that’s not the first time viewers have seen this dark cloud.
‘Servant’ episode ‘Séance’ isn’t the first time audiences see a mysterious dark cloud. | Apple TV+ ‘Servant’ Season 4’s ‘Séance’ introduced in-home nurses Bobbie and Beverly
After Dorothy’s arrival back home proved tougher than expected, she hired two live-in nurses, Bobbie and Beverly. The two women quickly made themselves at home in the Turner’s house, much to Leanne’s annoyance. This article contains some spoilers for Spider-man: No Way Home
Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon have just made one of the highest-grossing movies of all time! What are they going to do next? Well, the answer probably isn’t “Go to Disneyland,” because Disney has likely already brought their biggest money-makers to the happiest place on earth. But the talents behind 2021’s most popular movie Spider-Man: No Way Home certainly have a lot of good work ahead of them!
Tom Holland
Before swinging into Captain America: Civil War as Spider-Man, Tom Holland impressed viewers by playing Billy Elliot on stage and a teenager surviving a tsunami in J.A. Bayona’s The Impossible. Holland’s natural charm and youthful wit made him a pleasing screen presence. But as Peter Parker graduates high school and moves onto the real world, it’s clear that Holland is ready for more complex and adult roles.

For actor Zac Garred, starring in the long-awaited and much-delayed Australian Gangster was like “going to a really cool party and not being able to tell anyone about it”.
The Roadshow Rough Diamond series, written and directed by Gregor Jordan, premieres tonight on the Seven Network some three years after it was shot, with delays due to legal reasons.

The Girlfriend Experience: Barrett Mines B-Movie Tropes in Hybrid Throwback
There’s no greater hotbed of dysfunction and perversity than the homosocial staples of either the boy’s locker room or an all-girls boarding school. The seeming endless fascination with the traumatic universality of these gendered spaces may yet be arguably rife with narrative possibility, and a somewhat underwhelming attempt to recuperate such energies for contemporary parameters is Seance, the directorial debut of Simon Bartlett.
Better known as the favored scribe of Adam Wingard, having penned You’re Next (2011) and their penultimate offering, The Guest (2014), with which this narrative shares some similarities, devious preadolescents and the vengeful female spirits purportedly haunting them formulate this conceit.…...

Now, after a series of films alongside his creative partner Adam Wingard, Barrett’s directorial debut, Seance, has finally arrived despite a 5-year pursuit. Set at an all-girls academy, the slasher mystery begins with the enrollment of Camille Meadows (Suki Waterhouse), who, after being waitlisted, is finally called upon to replace a deceased student. When a new low-budget horror film copies Jessica Harper’s car-bound arrival from the original Suspiria within its first ten minutes, one knows instantly what territory they’re in, as amalgamating scenes and stylistic tics of various ‘70s and ‘80s horror classics has basically been the standard process for a whole decade’s worth of genre film. At the point where you’re just waiting for the obligatory split-diopter shot to show up, it’s hard to not get the feeling of the genre going into a bit of a death spiral. And, when aside from maybe two good blood spurts, the film seems to be lightly ashamed to even be a slasher––not relishing in the deaths at all, or even generating much in the way of tension––there’s an even bigger problem at hand.

For years now, writer Simon Barrett has been involved with several of my favorite modern horrors, including You’re Next, the criminally underappreciated Blair Witch (2016), and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as The Guest. But now, Barrett is branching out creatively, directing his first feature Seance, which follows a group of young women at an elite prep school who are being murdered by a mysterious entity after a prank amongst several of the students goes horribly wrong.
During the recent press day for Seance, I had the opportunity to speak with Barrett about his directorial debut, and we also dug into some of our own geeky tendencies as horror fans throughout our conversation. Barrett also discussed the inspirations behind the story of Seance, the importance of being good to your characters when you’re writing and/or directing, working with his incredible cast, and more.

Along with a few fast-forgotten dogs, Simon Barrett has written some of the more enjoyable U.S. horror opuses over the last two decades, from 2004’s period ghost story “Dead Birds” through a series of Adam Wingard films that laid career path to that director’s current big-budget assignment “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
You might expect Barrett’s own belated feature directorial debut to expand upon the clever, blackly humorous genre mayhem of his best Wingard projects like “The Guest” and “You’re Next.” But “Seance” proves a disappointingly boilerplate retro slasher that’s pedestrian on every level from concept to execution. It’s not terrible, only so devoid of imagination, wit or novelty (as well as scares) that it seems a perversely generic choice with which to launch a new career phase. Many things can be true at the same time, a concept that first-time feature director and long-time horror scribe Simon Barrett tries to tap into with his debut “Seance.” It hints at the possibility of two ghosts within its first five minutes and the twinned ghost stories soon expand to involve all manner of other horror-centric tropes: a creepy boarding school, a mysterious new girl, a shy new friend with (maybe) a secret, even a handsome outsider who loves to lurk — along with the usual assortment of flickering lights, bloody visions, and a basement filled with archival material that might hold some answers. Yes, many things can be true at once, but “Seance” might benefit from being pared to a more streamlined story.
Barrett’s film hints at the sleeker, darker film underneath his many genre fixations; it also sets up the possibility of a followup that could better tap into those ideas.

Suki Waterhouse continues to be a rising star in the genre sphere, but that’s merely one side of the versatile English performer. Returning to the screen in Simon Barrett’s directorial debut, Seance, Waterhouse plays Camille Meadows, the newest enrollee at a prestigious all-girls academy which recently lost a fellow student to a mysterious suicide. Shortly after Camille’s arrival, she takes part in a seance with five other girls in order to figure out what actually happened to their deceased classmate.

I was already curious about Seance based solely on the fact that it unfolds at a boarding school where the new girl is the outsider and may just be at the center of a good old murderous entity mystery.
Suki Waterhouse plays said new girl Camille Meadows, the newest student at the Edelvine Academy for Girls. Shortly after her arrive3l, six girls invite her to join them for a seance where they plan on calling forth the spirit of a former student who is rumored to haunt the school. When one of the six girls turns up dead, the others start to wonder what exactly they summoned.

There are plenty of movies that feel as though they’re bound and determined to follow a set formula while trying to embellish just enough to give the feeling that they’re new and exciting, but there is some comfort to be had in the idea of following that set formula, since it’s familiar and can be plotted from point A to point B. Already the trailer to Seance makes it apparent that the movie will begin with the admittance of a young woman to a top-notch boarding school. She might be a bit odd, a little awkward, but she’s confident enough

Look, in the wrong hands, a film about a group of students at a prestigious all-girls school summoning a demon could be pretty lame and uninspired. A few weeks ago, Dan Stevens teased the possibility of a sequel to Adam Wingard’s 2014 picture The Guest. The cult favorite was recently added to Netflix, and is well worth a watch for anyone wanting to see Stevens as a U.S. soldier who unexpectedly turns up at a family’s home. The actor doubled down on his interest in a follow-up to The Guest in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, albeit while still noting that his collaborators are pretty busy right now.
Stevens had this to say about the prospect of working with Wingard and writer Simon Barrett again:
