RIP Fred Willard
studioAT1 October 2020
I'm enjoying the little flashback moments from episodes gone by that are appearing in these final series episodes. They're a subtle doffing of the gap to the legacy of the show.

This is another lovely episode, made all the more poignant when you consider that Fred Willard himself is no longer with us.

I think 'Modern Family' takes a lot of flak, but there have been lots of good moments in this final series.

Underrated episode

Modern family is about relationships and the relation between Phil and Fred are very real in this episode. Fred so close to the end and Phil so in his prime of life loving his father was both upsetting and uplifting. It was heartbreaking to see Fred near the end of his life still able to act so superbly. Another fantastic example of a golden age coming to an end x

Frank had always been a great character in this show, and his relationship with Phil was nothing but great as well. Modern Family has always been able to strike you with, sometimes very small but, powerful/emotional moments at the end of the most average and sometimes even boring episodes, and this is something I always loved about this show. This is a decent episode with some great character moments and superb acting by Fred Willard, who I didn't know had passed away until after I watched the episode, which made the ending hit even harder. Major props to Ty Burell as well, his acting and the way he delivers that line "I just didn't know it would be the last" I hit hard, I got legit emotional watching this episode, It gave us one of the most emotional moments of the entire series and it was another very good episode of this final season, which I am loving so far.

RIP Fred Willard

Funny moments, sad moments and character moments

This episode was very funny. I'm happy we have some character development for Manny. Love the bond between Phil and his dad. My favourite storyline was Cameron and Gloria's - it was a classic modern family story that rolled throughout the episode.

This is a good episode for many of our characters such as Joe, Manny, Gloria, Phil, Claire, Mitch and Jay. I'd highly recommend it.

This episode is the perfect example of why I'll never understand people basing their ratings on how funny MF is. The show would never have lasted as long as it has if it was JUST funny. Modern Family has so many levels, yes, it's funny, but it's also sweet, touching. It makes you think, it can be mindless, you laugh, you cry. Sometimes at the same time! This is one of those episodes. I'm smiling for majority of this episode but no matter what, as soon as Ty Burrell says that line about not knowing that would be last day he spent with his dad, the tears flow. Especially because by the time I saw the episode the first time here in Australia, Fred Willard had already passed away so it hit harder. Great performances by all on this one. I will only ever give high ratings for Modern Family. If I don't feel the need to, I will keep quiet.

Beautiful episode
Really touching episode between Phil and his dad Frank.

People keep mentioning certain episodes aren't funny and rating them low because of that. Not sure why people expect laughter all the time.

Well, we can literally say it didn't age well. Episode was cute, maybe not the funniest but definitely the warmest.

Missed Opportunity!

The perfect set-up and they forgot to spike it?!?

Other than quirky misunderstandings, conveniently perfect set-ups is what this show is all about.

In season 8, episode 19, "Frank's Wedding," the writers unknowingly foreshadowed Frank's demise with a pretty funny joke:

Frank, "But wait, you're still going to do my funeral the way we talked about, right?" Phil, "The recording of you banging on that piece of wood screaming let me out of here?!" Frank, "It's a real shame I'm gonna miss that."

The time finally came and ultimately went for Phil to fulphil his father's wish. It would have been an irrefutably fitting send-off for this character and exactly what would have made this episode truly deserving to be Fred Willard's farewell episode. As others have mentioned, this show isn't just a comedy, but I sure as hell don't watch it for the drama. What a sappy episode.

Okay - I love the show...But now I'm going to be picky.....I was surprised when Phil spoke about how cool his dad was when Phil was a kid. That his dad was up on everything like using terms like BFF and LOL. I assume that Phil is around 50 years old, so even when he was a teenager in the 1980s, people were not saying that. Those abbreviations didn't become a thing until the 2000's when texting took off.
