The sickness gimmick could prove to be more a hindrance than a help for this show.

Nice to see Christian Kane back, as he has a sanguine onscreen presence which I've liked since I first noticed him in ANGEL.

He, nor the show, is done any favors by the bad acting of co-star Samantha Richelle, who let both down with her rote speech about the "five blocks". This scene required real raw emotion beyond her acting chops. Hopefully experience and time will allow her to become more than the show's pretty face, enabling her to deliver her lines with some believability.

By the way, does her character, Kai constantly wear a bikini under her clothing in preparation for the occasion she may need to be undercover, or perhaps regularly carry one in readiness in her handbag. It was tiny enough to fit.

I do find issue with the premise of the show: sick ex-DEA agent Alex Walker comes to an island in the Philippians for his health, but finds that he doesn't get the rest and peace and quiet he needs to convalesce, as he is continually drawn into dangerous life-and-death situations.

This illness then just becomes a gimmick to get him to the island, and really will only come into play either for dramatic, or even comedic, effort, and nothing else.

Alex Walker may as well not be sick at all, for the actual lack of any real effect it will have on his life and adventures on the island: His illness will slow him down in certain scenarios, will cause him to be in danger in others, and will cause mini cliff-hanger moments at the worst possible times, but in the end will actually lead to nothing of any real lasting consequence.

This will be the status quo of the show (which the audience could get really bored with really quickly), that episode one has already established.

I predict, though that season one will end in a cliff-hanger with Alex Walker collapsing unconscious, and the audience will have to tune in next season to find out if he survived. And then, if the show is renewed for season two, for the audience to find out that it actually wasn't as bad as we all thought. Alex will then get the same reminders and cautions as he did from his doctor at the start of this episode, and for the rest of the season continue on his merry way, following the status quo already established in season one.

Christian Kane Never Disappoints
jksword081 April 2020
I have watched the first episode of Christian Kane's new TV show, Almost Paradise, twice so far in the last couple of days. It was that good that I wanted to watch it again right away. I cannot say that about any other show on TV right now. I watch once, and that is enough. Christian Kane is an extremely versatile actor. He shows such raw emotion. He can make you laugh and then turn around and make you cry in the next scene. You can tell he put his heart and soul into the character of Alex Walker. I absolutely loved all the action scenes. Christian Kane makes it all look so easy. I truly loved this first episode from beginning to end. We all certainly need an escape from the real world right now, and this was perfect. I felt as if I was actually on that island. I cannot wait until next week to see what Alex and his new friends have planned for us.

SPOILERS POSSIBLE

Warning: Spoilers
Have been really looking forward to Almost Paradise starring Christian Kane, of Leverage, The Librarians and Angel plus many other credits! It did NOT disappoint! Lots of action! I love to see Christian Kane perform his own stunts! Lots of emotion which he performs so well. The quips and one liners are an added bonus! Looking forward to more of Almost Paradise. This is something that will light up the dreary Monday night offerings on tv. Looks like Paradise to me!

Finding Mabuhay
Prismark1021 April 2022
It is not quiet Death in Paradise or Magnum.

Philippines does serve as an unusual and exotic setting for this action drama.

Christian Kane is former DEA Agent Alex Walker who has had to leave on health grounds. Suffering from high blood pressure he needs to monitor his heart rate.

His heart which could burst if his heartbeat gets too high.

Therefore he has retired to a small gift shop and apartment he purchased in an island resort. Only to find out that the property is delipidated and subsumed by a giant luxury hotel development.

While he renovates the property. Walker spots a drug bust that is about to go wrong and ends up working reluctantly for the local police.

The first episode sees Walker partnered up with Detectives Alamares and Mendoza. They go after a drug gang who have arrived in Philippines to export a synthetic drug to the USA.

Walker goes undercover to partner up with the drug gang. Hot on his heels is an ex DEA colleague who dislikes Walker.

There is the right amount of action and some comedy in the opener. The paradise island setting does bring to mind the Hawaiian set Magnum.

Walker quickly establishes a chemistry with his new police partners.

The antagonism between his ex colleague is lame. The constant heart monitoring is a gimmick that could get old quickly.

REST AND RELAXATION...HUH!!
tranquilityentertainment1 February 2021
Alex Walker came to Cebu retire....for rest and relaxation. Little did he know things had changed.....and so would his life. Action, adventure, frustration and HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE do NOT GO TOGETHER!! Christian Kane does a FABULOUS job in making it work and finally fits in...finding his Mabuhay.

Strong Out of the Gate

Warning: Spoilers
Full Disclosure: I am a #ChristianKane fan; I have watched almost every movie and TV appearance he has made. I like his acting range, from drama to action to comedy - all of which are demonstrated in this series - and that he performs his own stunts. There are 4 main characters in #AlmostParadise, and we are introduced to all 4 in this first episode #FindingMabuhay. Kane plays ex-DEA agent #AlexWalker as a man trying to make a difference, and ending up being broken by the process. His response to being told that his partner didn't actually kill him, Walker responds "Didn't he?" The second character introduced is #KaiMendoza, a strong, capable member of a law enforcement team which includes the third character, #ErnestoAlamares whose hand-to-hand skills are impressive and are actually performed by #ArtAcuna. I like the combination of Walker and Ernesto best because of their true fighting abilities. The fourth character - which is the first introduced in this episode - are the Philippines and its people. I love seeing a different (less seedy) side of the Islands in this series, particularly when I found out that most of the cast and crew are Filipino. I will see how long it takes for the Philippines to become my co-favorite star, right up there with Christian Kane.
