Over the past 40-plus years, no figure in American documentary has been more important than Sheila Nevins. She has produced or executive produced hundreds of documentaries for HBO and more recently for MTV Documentary Films. And she’s won 32 Emmys, more than any single person.
But there’s one credit that hasn’t been attached to her name, until now: director. At the age of 84, Nevins has added that title to her long list of accomplishments with The ABCs of Book Banning, an Oscar-contending short documentary about increasingly aggressive efforts by conservatives to keep certain published works out of the hands of schoolchildren.
Nevins joins the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss her directorial debut, which she explains was inspired by seeing a viral video of a 100-year-old woman taking on the Martin County School Board in Florida. Grace Linn, who has since turned 101, denounced board...

Mick Jagger joined Jimmy Fallon for a skit on The Tonight Show in which he confirmed that he did, in fact, once get some satisfaction. In the clip, Jagger and Fallon get locked in a walk-in freezer and begin to spill their deepest secrets thinking they are trapped there forever (the sketch is aptly named “Freezer Secrets”).
“One time I did get satisfaction,” Jagger admitted to Fallon in reference to the Rolling Stones’ 1965 hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” “Way back in 1992.”
“Really?” Fallon asked. “From what?” “Popping bubble wrap,...

The music industry’s biggest artists can earn a good chunk of change these days by selling the rights to their musical catalogs, but Mick Jagger isn’t so sure that The Rolling Stones will be the next band to cash out. In fact, they might donate the money from their extensive discography to charity instead.
The Rolling Stones are as much of a brand as a rock ‘n’ roll band, and fans know Jagger has maintained a strong hand in the group’s business dealings. Take his interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine — where he discussed selling the copyrights to the band’s music — as proof. Still, he scoffed at the idea of a sale, quipping, “the children don’t need $500 million to live well. Come on.” Approving the suggestion that the money could go to charity instead of his estate, Jagger added, “You maybe do some good in the world.

Robbie Robertson found his faith and purpose on the radio. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, this child of jewelry-plating factory workers discovered rock-and-roll via the Am airwaves of Wkbw out of Buffalo, New York, and fell hard for the blues in the wee hours when Wlac deejay John R. blasted the 12-bar gospel into his bedroom from the far-off music mecca of Nashville, Tennessee. His path was set, and it brought him to rowdy rockabilly artist Ronnie Hawkins, who was impressed enough with a teenage Robertson's guitar acumen to bring him on as a member of his backing band The Hawks. In the early 1960s, Robertson formed a bond with singer/bassist Rick Danko, singer/pianist Richard Manuel, multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson, and singer-drummer Levon Helm.
It's here that these five, brilliantly talented rock-blues aficionados formed The Band.

Dolly Parton’s upcoming rock album, Rockstar, is a behemoth. It consists of 30 songs, mostly covers and a few Parton originals, performed by Parton and an incredible roster of guests. While most people wouldn’t say no to Parton, a few artists couldn’t appear on Rockstar, but it wasn’t because they didn’t want to.
Dolly Parton said Mick Jagger wasn’t able to appear on her rock album
After being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Dolly Parton made her first rock album. However, she wasn’t going to do it without some help. She is covering many classic rock songs with the help of rock legends and modern stars such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, P!nk, Elton John, Steven Tyler, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Lizzo, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, and Sting.

Paul McCartney is no stranger to putting together a concert setlist. The Beatles stopped touring in the mid-1960s, but their bassist hit the road when he formed Wings in 1971, and he’s been at it ever since. He knows he needs to play “Hey Jude” on every tour, and Paul said he expects The Rolling Stones to perform three specific songs when they play live.

Upon her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, Dolly Parton announced her intention to record a rock album. “If I’m gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I’m gonna have to earn it,” she said at the time.
Parton has spent the last year making good on that promise by enlisting some of the biggest names in music to join her in recording a mix of rock ‘n’ roll originals and covers. The end result, aptly titled Rockstar, will arrive on November 17th via her own Butterfly Records in conjunction with Big Machine Label Group.

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was one of the earliest hits by The Rolling Stones. While the band had been ascending in popularity, this song cemented them as one of the world’s best rock n’ roll bands. The Rolling Stones knew they needed to follow up the song with another hit, and while they succeeded, Keith Richards wasn’t satisfied with that track.
‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ was The Rolling Stones’ first No. 1 hit in the U.S. Keith Richards | Javier Bragado/Redferns
The Rolling Stones had been rising in popularity in the U.K. thanks to a few early hits, such as “I Wanna Be Your Man”. However, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, sent their stardom into the stratosphere. The track was first released as a single in 1965 and later included on the album Out of Our Heads. It was an immediate hit, reaching No.

The Rolling Stones have several hit songs, but the one that skyrocketed their fame was “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and lead singer Mick Jagger wrote the 1965 track. While Richards initially disliked the song, he realized later on what made the song so successful.

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was one of the first songs to use what Richards called a “fuzz tone.” The effect was utilized using a Maestro fuzzbox, which added a distorted sound to the guitar and bass. Sales of the Maestro fuzzbox shot up after this song was released because other artists wanted to recreate this sound. In his memoir, Life, Richards said the “fuzz tone” made “Satisfaction” such a hit.

Many artists would want to savor the moment they realize a song will be a hit. However, when one is as gifted as The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, writing hits comes so naturally that he doesn’t even realize it. Richards said he wrote one of the band’s biggest hits “in his sleep,” and didn’t even remember doing it.

Sam Raimi's 1990 film "Darkman" may be classified as a superhero film, but it bears just as much genre resemblance to a 1930s Universal monster movie. The titular Darkman, Dr. Westlake (Liam Neeson), barely survives and explosion and facial acid bath, leaving only a small fraction of his skin left unburned. Fleeing the hospital, sans a lot of his face, Dr. Westlake begins operating out of a dank basement, working to construct a mask of synthetic skin that will allow him to appear as his did prior to the accident. Synthetic skin, you see was his field of expertise. His realistic mask, however, begins to melt and degrade if it's in direct sunlight for too long, hence his need to be a Darkman.
The aforementioned explosion/acid bath was done by goons working for the crime boss Robert G. Durant (an excellent Larry Drake) who was looking for some incriminating documents uncovered by Dr.

Law & Order: Organized Crime is changing leadership again.
The NBC hit has named Sean Jablonski as showrunner for the highly-anticipated third season of the series.

There’s another change coming in the Dick Wolf universe. Sean Jablonski is stepping in as the new showrunner on “Law & Order: Organized Crime” for the upcoming third season, Variety has learned.
Jablonski becomes the fifth showrunner on the series, replacing Bryan Goluboff, who was announced as the Season 3 showrunner in May. Barry O’Brien had been named interim showrunner in February following the exit of Ilene Chaiken. Prior to Chaiken, Matt Olmstead was showrunner.
“Law & Order: Organized Crime,” produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment, revolves around the character of Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni, who starred on “Svu” for 12 seasons, and then returned to the “Law & Order” universe in 2021. Because of Stabler’s longstanding relationship with “Svu’s” Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) — something fans have obsessed over for years now — those two shows have frequently intersected since “Organized Crime” premiered.

More changes are happening behind the scenes on Law & Order: Organized Crime as the NBC procedural is once again switching showrunners ahead of the third season. As reported by Deadline, Sean Jablonski is set to take over as showrunner for Season 3, just three months after Law & Order: Svu veteran Bryan Goluboff took the reins. Goluboff had previously replaced Barry O’Brien, who was serving as interim showrunner after the departure of Ilene Chaiken in February. That means the show has been through four different showrunners in less than a year. Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp will, apparently, do it all for the nookie. The pair covered the quintessential 1999 Limp Bizkit song “Nookie” for their popular YouTube cover series “Sunday Lunch.”
In the video, the King Crimson guitarist, wearing a sequined baseball cap, takes on guitar duties while Willcox rocks out on the vocals. As usual, the pair filmed the clip in their kitchen, using a fan to create a dramatic wind machine effect on Willcox’s hair.

Sharing an intro of similarly dreamy, plucked guitar, SiR’s latest single “Life is Good” initially feels reminiscent of his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmate Sza’s smash “Good Days.” Yet, whereas Sza tussled with stressors on her track, SiR sounds truly carefree. “Everything but the weather, girl, I got under control,” he sings with his characteristic cool. Guest vocalist Scribz Riley — also one of the track’s producers and a collaborator to Cardi B, H.E.R., and Khalid — puts struggle in his review in his verse. “Like look what a nigga...

The Rolling Stones resumed their 60th anniversary tour in Milan, Italy Tuesday night after being forced to postpone two gigs last week when Mick Jagger came down with Covid, but they took the stage without backup singer Sasha Allen. In her place was Chanel Haynes, a veteran gospel singer that recently portrayed Tina Turner in the UK production of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.

Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox have been serving up their Sunday Lunch cover series on YouTube for over a year, and for their latest effort the pair has unleashed a raucous version of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.”
In the video, the King Crimson guitarist takes on guitar duties while Willcox, clad in a revealing goth top with literal butterfly wings, gives the vocals a punk rock flair. The pair, filming in their kitchen, get some visual help from a dramatic wind machine.

The Rolling Stones spent the past two months bringing their No Filter tour to enormous football stadiums all over America, but they wrapped it up Tuesday night at the relatively intimate Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. The casino amphitheater seats a mere 7,000 people as opposed to the stadiums with roughly ten times that amount. (Tickets were upwards of $2,000, and were going for even more on the resale market.)
The set was somewhat condensed at 17 songs as opposed to the 19 played in most cities, but they still packed in most of the standards,...

The Rolling Stones aren’t launching the 2021 leg of their No Filter tour until Sunday night at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Missouri, but a tiny crowd of invited guests got to see them play a 14-song warmup show Monday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The private event was organized by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

The unbelievably sad news that Charlie Watts has died is just beginning to reverberate around the world. The public knew he was going to miss out on the upcoming Stones tour since he was recovering from surgery, but the 80-year-old drummer had survived past health scares unscathed and it truly seemed like he was made of steel.
Watts joined the Rolling Stones in January 1963 and is the only member besides Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to appear on every record. He also didn’t miss a single concert throughout his 58-year history in the band.

Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox have been dishing out a Sunday Lunch cover series on YouTube since the beginning of the year, performing Black Sabbath, Zz Top, and System of a Down songs from their kitchen. This past weekend, the pair returned to Willcox’s punk roots with a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant.”

As the YouTube description proclaims, Toyah Wilcox finally breaks Robert Fripp’s brain as the couple cover Zz Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” in the latest installment of their Sunday Lunch video series.
Joined as always by their masked guitarist, Sydney Jake, the trio ran through the Zz Top classic with characteristic abandon. About halfway through, though, Wilcox turned to Fripp and flashed him, leaving the guitarist looking dazed and amused, although he still managed to keep his composure and not miss a note.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 4, Episode 6 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Nov. 4 on Fox.
Bob Saget doesn’t demand a recount. The comedian may be disappointed that his time on “The Masked Singer” is over, but he’ll accept the results. (Scroll down to watch his unmasking.)
“I wanted to keep going,” Saget told Variety. “I deserved it. But my voice cracked a bit and, look, the audience voted. And I’m one of those people that accepts the result when people say ‘you know, you’re not coming back.'”
Saget performed as the “Squiggly Monster,” which he admitted was difficult to navigate — but perhaps the safest costume in the room. “The Squiggly head is like 30 to 40 pounds of Covid safety,” he said.
“Nothing’s coming in or going out, including air,” he added. “So, that was the hardest part. I literally couldn’t see,...

The Rolling Stones went into 2020 thinking they’d once again be playing to sold-out football stadiums across North America on their ongoing No Filter tour. It’s still theoretically possible that they’ll find a way to squeeze in those dates before the end of the year, but it’s far more likely that they’ll have to wait until 2021 or even 2022 to play make-up shows.
Fans did get a brief chance to see the Stones play live over the weekend when they appeared at Global Citizen’s “One World: Together at Home” event.

It was all about girl power on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 3.
Joan and Maggie struggled with marriage trouble, and Zoey stepped out of her comfort zone to aid them both.
As Zoey put it, her many years of relationship experience, sarcasm heavily included, made her a qualified couples therapist.
Joan performed Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones, and initially, Zoey assumed it was in response to the team's performance when in actuality it was in retaliation of her broken marriage to her terribly narcissistic husband Charlie.
Already a show focused on female empowerment, it resumed this message successfully and with immense poise. Lorelei Gilmore would never have let a man take over her life.
Joan just needed a bit of a reminder and clear lenses to see that her husband's flawed behavior was unacceptable and deserved a proper send-off.
It's a girl power thing. I scream out when I see injustice.

On Monday, the Rolling Stones announced U.S. dates for their 2019 No Filter tour. The news followed months of rumors, fueled in no small part by the Stones themselves plastering their iconic tongue logo at stadiums all over America. Unlike the marathon tours of the past, this one is hitting a mere 13 markets. When your drummer is going to celebrate his 78th birthday on the road, it’s best to not push things too hard.
The Stones have hit the road every year since coming back together in 2012 after a five-year break.

The Rolling Stones returned to London for the band’s first hometown show in five years on May 22. It was the second stop on the “No Filter” tour and the usually football-ready London Stadium, where West Ham United Football Club plays, was converted to a Ga floor so fans were able to get close to the front. Good thing because it was a stripped-down affair, with no fancy stagecraft or giant inflatable women.
Mick Jagger will turn 75 in July, and while many marvel at the immortal genes of Keith Richards, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone 25 years away from 100 who has the energy, style, grace and, yes, voice of Jagger. That he can still sing is impressive in and of itself, but the fact that Jagger can run across the stage, and up and down a runway that jutted out into the crowd is mind-blowing.
