“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened in second place at the South Korean weekend box office, a distance behind local holdover title “The Roundup: Punishment.”
“Punishment,” the fourth part of Don Lee’s “Roundup” action franchise, dominated proceedings for the third weekend in succession. It earned $5.53 million and advanced its cumulative total to $67.7 million, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its earnings represented a still strong 58% share of the weekend theatrical market, but they were also down by 60% week-on-week, suggesting that “Punishment” may not reach the heights of the previous franchise elements.
In 2022, “The Roundup” earned $95.7 million (using current rates of currency exchange), while last year “The Roundup: No Way Out” earned $76.3 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” recorded $2.45 million between Friday and Sunday with a 26% market share. Over its full five-day opening in Korea, the film earned $3.10 million from 415,000 ticket sales.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” may not feature the words of screenwriting power couple Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, but their imprint is all over the reboot franchise and because of the producer credit they fought for when they wrote “Rise,” their names will be too. Having been an agent before he transitioned into screenwriting, Jaffa was well acquainted with the benefits of obtaining producer status and it has since allowed him and wife Amanda Silver to maintain ownership over a reboot franchise many consider to be better than its predecessor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jaffa said his creative shift away from agency work wasn’t much of a surprise, but that Silver helped him along.

Talking apes managed to wrestle away the top spot of the box-office weekend from a stuntman as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes finished just $6.8 million ahead of The Fall Guy

The failure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to kick on and repeat the exploits it once made fueled concerns about Disney Studios’ outlook. The last thing you want is for your leading franchise to drop the ball. But the studio can put the ghosts of the MCU to bed (for now at least) and celebrate a success that acts as a much-needed succor to the team – the blockbuster opening week of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters, which means key plot details have begun to find their way online.
In a new interview with THR, star Freya Allan (Mae) discusses the ending and how the original conclusion played out in far less subtle - and quite a bit darker - fashion.
Major spoilers follow.
During the climactic battle, Mae makes a fateful decision to blow open the floodgates and destroy the human tech the villainous Proximus was trying to get his hands on, killing hundreds of apes in the process.
“It’s not what she wants to do," Allan explains. "But it’s that, or Proximus has all these weapons and humanity is screwed. She’s gone through so much, she’s lost all the people she cares about, which was a large part of how I justified everything that she did,” Allan says. “So...

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) opened to $56.5 million, slightly above pre-opening projections, which is encouraging after “The Fall Guy” (Universal) last week. That’s a relief to theaters that hope summer releases meet their potential and buffer what is expected to be a major drop in revenues versus last year.
20th Century Fox released “Planet of the Apes” in 1968. For an old franchise, this is one that still has plenty of life: The “Kingdom” opening matched the last “Apes” installment in 2017 (albeit when tickets cost 15 percent less). Speaking of old franchises, it also beat the $55 million opening of the 2021 Bond entry “No Time to Die.” Disappointing B Cinemascore aside, “Kingdom” seems poised for a solid run.
The opening for “Kingdom” doubled that of “The Fall Guy;” that differential happens to reflect the difference in the films’ production budgets. “Apes” took in an initial $129 million worldwide. “The Fall Guy...

One of the prominent features of the Planet of the Apes franchise is that the binary that exists between apes and humans ends up being emphasized through a moral lens and via subversive takes, which acts as a symbolical presentation of the treatment of the marginalized in ‘civilized’ society. However, the ape antagonists who exist on the fringes of the binary, as traits of humans and apes seamlessly intermingle in their characterization, make for the most intriguing discourse involving the two species. In the original series, the orangutan Dr. Zaius played such a role as the ape leader of science and religion; in the rebooted trilogy, Koba, the human-hating Bonobo, made quite an impact as the usurper; and in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the tyrant Bonobo monarch, Proximus Caesar, has left a strong impression on viewers in a short span of time. Despite the character being a...

Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw Then TV Glow is looking at an estimated $195k+ on 21 screens, a great week-two expansion for the A24 film. The number is driven by a passionate fan base for the gender-bending supernatural thriller that’s been skewing very young, male and heavily LGBTQ+. Will continue a rollout in coming weeks. It’s not clear where the screen count will max out, but so far so good.

Freya Allan is currently being praised for her standout role in this weekend's new release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. However, many of you will know the actress best for her breakout role in The Witcher.
The Netflix series lost Henry Cavill at the end of season 3 and, after Blood Origin bombed, the next two seasons will be shot back-to-back, ending with a fifth and final batch of episodes (plans for another spin-off, The Rats, have been scrapped).
Talking to Inverse (via SFFGazette.com), Allan - whose role as Ciri put her on the map before being cast in the latest Apes movie - revealed why she's ready to move on from the Continent.
"The Witcher definitely set up a lot for me, just in terms of being my drama school and providing me with a certain level of confidence," the actress said. "You also learn so many random skills.

The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made a lot more at $72 million, but times have changed, and now a $50 million-plus opening is cause for celebration at the House of Mouse, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes the first solid box office win for Disney (who are releasing through 20th Century Films) in a while. This is much more than the $40 million we predicted earlier this week.
However, there is one potential cloud on the horizon for the film. According to Deadline, the CinemaScore for the film has only garnered a B rating, which is low...

Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” climbed to $72.5 million at the international box office in its first weekend of release.
The newest film in the long-running “Apes” series also notched No. 1 in North America with $56.5 million, bringing its initial global tally to a promising $129 million. Like its predecessors, the $160 million-budgeted “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is projected to earn the bulk of its revenues at the international box office.
Overseas, the movie enjoyed the biggest start in China with $11.4 million (a lackluster debut for the territory), France with $7.1 million, Mexico with $6.4 million and the United Kingdom with $4.8 million. Other top markets were Korea ($3.2 million), Australia ($2.7 million), Brazil ($2.6 million), Germany (2.2 million) and Spain ($2.2 million).
Audiences opted to watch the film in the best possible quality as premium formats represented 41% of global box office revenues. In Imax alone, “Kingdom” earned $13.2 million worldwide, including $6.2 million from foreign territories.

Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $56.5 million in its first weekend of release.
Those ticket sales were a hair above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and were easily enough to tower over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).
“The weekend figure is roughly average for the genre, but average here is based on the biggest action films of all time,” says David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “This is an excellent opening.”

Early Sunday Am: Moviegoers weren’t monkeying around this weekend, making a destination to cinemas to see Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie had a lot of gorilla testosterone and held in there on Saturday amassing an estimated near $20M per non-Disney sources, which is a -10% ease against previews/Friday of $22.2M. Many believe that will get the 20th Century Studios’ sequel to $55M-$56M at the top of the pic’s range. Great job, Disney, and that’s off a B CinemaScore and 79% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
That hold yesterday for Apes gives rivals hope that there’s at least a pulse out there at the box office; many concerned after Fall Guy coming in short last weekend.

In his monologue heading into Mother’s Day weekend, Jimmy Fallon tried to offer some (comedic) advice for former President Donald Trump.
“This Sunday is Mother’s Day,” Fallon began. “So, for the next 48 hours, if you see an Amazon delivery van, pull over like it’s an ambulance, Ok?”
He continued, noting that people will spend around $250 on Mother’s Day gifts.
“But don’t worry, the best gift is free — which is taking the kids somewhere so mom can have five minutes of peace!” Fallon quipped. “That’s what they want.”
“Also, just a quick word of advice to former President Trump,” Fallon added, addressing the Republican candidate. “Whatever you were thinking of spending on Melania this year, I’d double it.”

Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is here, and wreaking havoc on theatres. The movie has been receiving amazing responses from audiences and critics alike, and talks of continuing this story are already in the air. According to sources, the story is supposedly going to continue for five more movies. But for now, let’s talk about the one that’s already out.

Planet of the Apes is one colossal franchise in cinema history. It all started in 1968, kicking off a series of successful sequels, later the franchise received a reboot by Tim Burton in 2001. Though that one got mixed reviews, it set the stage perfectly for what Wes Ball has now delivered. Burton’s film introduced audiences to the Andy Serkis series, which has since solidified its own reputation and garnered immense popularity.

Henry Cavill leaving franchises midway is not something new. The English actor had already left many fans teary eyed when he left the role of Superman in the DC Extended Universe. So when his ardent fans heard that he would also be bidding adieu to The Witcher after giving them three fantastic seasons, it didn’t come as a shock to many. But they were disappointed. And a report suggests that the show is all set to come to an end after Season 5. And Freya Allen couldn’t be more relieved.

Spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" follow.
Koba (Toby Kebbell) from "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is the best blockbuster villain of the 2010s. One of Caesar's (Andy Serkis) sapient apes, first introduced in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Koba was a lab animal in a previous life. The brutal treatment left him scarred (both skin-deep and deeper) and hateful towards humans. In "Dawn," finally in a position to strike back, he attempts to assassinate Caesar so he can lead his misanthropic war.
Koba is much like Magneto, perennial foe of the X-Men, and another figure who believes peace with humanity is impossible because of his past trauma. It's not a one-to-one comparison, though, because Magneto is more noble than Koba. Magneto has done evil, but his goal is the prosperity of mutantkind. For Koba, the violence is the point; he wants humans to suffer,...

Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr.’s resume spans a wide spectrum of genres and performances. While some of these have been huge hits like the MCU movies and his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer, others have failed to make an impact, including the 2014 legal drama The Judge, which recently surged in popularity on Netflix’s streaming charts.

Andy Serkis was absolutely incredible as Caesar in the relaunch of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Throughout the three movies, the actor made the audience connect with the highly intelligent chimpanzee. Fans were absolutely heartbroken when Andy Serkis’ Caesar met his end in War for the Planet of the Apes. Needless to say, the actor’s portrayal of the character was a huge reason behind the success of the films.

Exclusive: 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is beating its chest towards a $125M global bow this weekend. At the international box office, we understand the Wes Ball-directed installment is at around $31M through Friday. As Anthony has reported, domestic is looking at a $52M-$55M start for the full frame.
Overseas, we’re eyeing $70M with some potential upside. Hindrance here is China as we noted in our preview. Even though Apes will come in at No. 1 for the frame there, it’s a soft market coming off of a big holiday weekend last session. This one includes a Saturday workday. The Maoyan (9.1) and Tpp (9.2) scores are good, but the Douban critical note is not so hot at 6.7 which is the lowest of the recent series. Estimates for the no longer reliable market’s start are around $11M.

Every Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Character, Ranked By How Much You Want To Hang Out With Them
Apes not kill apes ... and humans not spoil humans. Be warned: This article contains comprehensive spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
If I were living on a planet of the apes after a man-made virus wiped out the majority of humankind and left our simian overlords in charge, I would simply try to get along with everybody. Seriously, I'd like to know why nobody has ever thought of that before in the entirety of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. The sociopathic Koba is itching to duel-wield machine guns from horseback? Just give the poor ape a Snickers! Woody Harrelson's up to no good as the military leader of a cult-like group of soldiers, clinging to the last vestiges of power they have left? Honestly, Caesar, maybe consider the possibility that even Colonel Kurtz had his good days and bad days before going full "Moses leading...

Despite an overall positive reception from both critics and fans, 20th Century Studios' latest Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has received one of the worst CinemaScores of the franchise.
The Wes Ball-directed sci-fi adventure is now certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 80% (the audience score is also 80%), but has still only managed to secure a disappointing "B" CinemaScore.
For those unfamiliar with this particular system, a B may not sound too bad, but it's rare enough for a major studio blockbuster to fall below an A-, and it also marks the worst CinemaScore of the franchise since Tim Burton's disastrous 2001 remake.
Ultimately, this shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on the film's box office. Cinemagoers do tend to pay some attention to these scores, but not nearly as much as a green splat on Rotten Tomatoes, for example.

Although Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, it takes places hundreds of years later, so the film’s cast is all new, featuring The Witcher’s Freya Allan in its primary human role. As a young woman who partners with a chimpanzee on a hunting mission, Allan’s character is involved in plenty of the film’s action. And, although she had the option of using stunt doubles during the filming, Allan insisted on doing as many of her own stunts as she reasonably could. Has another sci-fi series ever explored the folly of intelligent thought as thoroughly, devastatingly, and colorfully as “The Planet of the Apes”? We here at IndieWire think not. With a now whopping 10 installments within the franchise and countless derivative work adding to the lore, “Planet of the Apes” stands in a league all its own and prides itself on an ability to constantly evolve (see what we did there?).
The concept for the series was first conceived in 1963 in French author Pierre Boulle’s novel “La Planète des singes,” which translates to “Planet of the Apes” or “Monkey Planet.” Sadly, American producer Arthur P. Despite this, the 1968 Charlton Heston- starring original “Planet of the Apes” was a huge success, launching multiple sequels that deftly dive into moral and ethical conversations surrounding modern day issues of the...

In the post-apocalyptic future where mankind has been reduced to mute, feral packs of humans and all of our skyscrapers have grown over with greenery, there isn't much use for money. But until that future inevitably comes, studios need cash to make movies like "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and they need those movies to generate even more money so that the whole hairy cycle can continue.
Fortunately, "Kingdom" is so far living up to the standards of its ancestors with an estimated opening weekend of $52-55 million, after grossing $22.2 million from Thursday previews and Friday ticket sales (per Deadline). That's roughly in line with early box office projections, and also on par with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" ($54.8 million) and "War for the Planet of the Apes" ($56.2 million). However, it falls short of two other entries in the franchise: "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been getting a lot of attention since the release of its trailer. Not only is the film bringing back one of the most iconic science-fiction series of all time, but it is doing it with a fresh approach. There is one star at the forefront of the media spotlight with the film’s release; Owen Teague.
Owen Teague in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as Noa
Taking over the role that Andy Serkis had in the series, with Noa becoming the new Caesar, the actor had some very big shoes to fill. While the role had to have been extremely difficult, there is no doubt that Teague has done an excellent job at it. Wes Ball recently gave an interview where he talked about the casting of the character. It would seem that finding the right Noa was particularly difficult.

If traffic holds up, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will succeed in opening to a solid $52 million to $56 million domestically for a first-place finish. Friday’s haul was $22.2 million, including $6.6 million in previews.
The Planet of the Apes franchise has always been a big player overseas, and the latest installment is opening around the globe timed to its North American release. Hopes are for an $80 million international launch.
The 20th Century and Disney movie is the second event pic of summer 2024 after Universal’s The Fall Guy, which left nerves frayed across Hollywood after opening to a disappointing $27.7 million over the May 5-7 frame. Tracking had suggested the action comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would at least start off in the $32 million to $35 million range, which was already a subdued number.

The entirety of human civilization is built as much upon perseverance and innovation as it is upon exploitation and egocentric control over nature, and as the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy has shown, the consequential hubris led to the ultimate downfall of humanity. The same viral outbreak that marked the end of human civilization—sending the surviving humans back to a primitive state—enhanced the intellectual capabilities of the apes and resulted in the dawn of a new simian civilization, one that continued the harmonious relationship with nature. However, in the recent entry of the rebooted series Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this new world order seems to have been shaken with the introduction of rogue ape clans, and human survivors who were unaffected by the virus and are trying to regain the world they have lost—and also due to the lost legacy of their first leader,...

In a nice piece of good news for exhibitors and studios, audiences are checking out to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in theatres, with Deadline reporting that it’s on track for an opening north of $50 million. That’s about on par with industry projections and better than the $40 million-plus we expected. That’s similar to the openings for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $54.8 million and $56.2 million, respectively. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did much bigger business, with a $72 million opening, but that was seen as a one-off.
While the $50-55 million is undoubtedly softer than those other movies if you adjust it for inflation, the industry has changed in recent years. The Fall Guy had a disastrous opening last weekend despite great reviews. Hollywood and exhibitors are feeling the pinch, especially...

I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

Time and time again, leading figures have shaped the course of human history through their actions and ideas and left behind a legacy to build the foundation of the future. More often than not, their legacies have been distorted by detractors who sought to serve their own selfish needs, misguiding people in the process. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes focuses on this recurrent trait of human history, and viewers are treated to a reflection of the past through an engaging narrative involving simian characters.
As the fourth installment of the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, the 2024 film proves itself to be a worthy successor to Caesar’s saga by capturing the core essence of human-ape dynamics, which is made intriguing thanks to the subverted power equation. Additionally, moving away from conventional and expected narrative progression, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes decides to take risks and also benefits from layered characterization,...

Who knew that French author Pierre Boulle’s slim, satirical 1963 novel, Le Planete des Singes, would lead to one of the most successful science fiction franchises of all time? Consisting of 10 films (to date), two TV series , comic books (including a magazine series from Marvel), toys, games, merchandise and more, Planet of the Apes remains one of the most enduring and unique sci-fi sagas in cinematic history.
The success of the original film, 1968’s Planet of the Apes, led studio 20th Century Fox (which finally made the movie after years of development and stalling) to launch a series of sequels. That wasn’t necessarily unheard of back then, but those sequels—which include Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)—told one complete story, unlike anything done on film before.

This article contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
At the end of the "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," Mae (Freya Allan) returns to the Eagle-raising ape clan to say farewell to Noa (Owen Teague), telling him that humans should be allowed to return to their position as the dominant species. Noa tells her that doing so would stifle the freedom the apes are currently experiencing. The metaphorical genie can't be put back in the bottle, so to speak. But then the audience sees that she's holding a gun behind her back. It's a chilling moment reinforcing the tyrannical Proximus Caesar's belief that Mae is looking out for humans and no one else. It's a shock to the system considering everything the two have been through, and it also leaves the ending up to interpretation. Was she there to kill him? Was the gun a...

Planet of the Apes franchise is not going to end its run with the fourth film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The producers recently revealed in an interview that the original plan for the franchise was to do nine films. Although many expected the films to drop significantly in quality by this time, the films are surprisingly maintaining a regular good standard. However, fans still believe that aiming for nine films might be stretching the luck of the films.
