Familiar Advice
JordanThomasHall17 December 2018
Dagwood is upset over an expensive hat Blondie has bought. Herb's cousin Louise Cooper (Hazel Shermet, "A Star is Born") is friends with Blondie and reveals to her that she writes Aunt Polly's advice column in the newspaper, and asks Blondie to take over for a week while she's on vacation. Blondie agrees. Herb, ever the meddler who likes to incite trouble, suggests Dagwood write to Aunt Polly about his troubles with Blondie. Herb relishes talking to Blondie who doesn't recognize the woman in question to be her. Dagwood and Blondie comically can't see that they're talking to one another through the newspaper. When Dagwood and Mr. Dithers come into trouble due to the advice they begin to take their anger into action.

The hat IS horrible, by the way.

When the story begins, the Bumsteads are having an uncharacteristic argument. It seems that Blondie wants to buy yet another hat...and this one is god-awfully ugly.

The next day, Louise visits Blondie and reveals to her that she is 'Aunt Polly'--the advice column lady in the newspaper. It seems that Louise is going on vacation and she wants Blondie to cover for her. During this time, Dagwood writes to Aunt Polly....as he wants advice about how to deal with Blondie and her hats. Ironically, none of the advice 'Aunt Polly' gives Dagwood works amd repeated it only made things worse.

This episode is interesting because it is such a time capsule into the 1950s. Women wore hats AND sitcoms often came up with plots like this...though you'd never see anything like it today. I am not complaining...more just pointing out how things have changes.

So is it any good? Yes....and it is original but not insanely original like the episode "The Spy".
