The 49th edition of Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival, Spain’s largest confab for films from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, will honor Mexican star Cecilia Suárez with its City of Huelva Award.
With leading roles in Netflix’s “The House of Flowers” and HBO Latin America’s “Capadocia,” Suárez has also be seen in ABC’s drama “The Promised Land” and has worked on films by as Tommy Lee Jones (“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”), James L. A jury made up of members of Gehitu, the Basque Association of Gays, Lesbians, Transexuals and Bisexuals, has short-listed five Latin American films for the XI Sebastiane Latino Award, to be presented during the 71st San Sebastian Festival. The selected titles are Almamula, Cross Dreamers, El filo de las tijeras, El silencio de los hombres and Transfariana.
The award goes to the Latin American feature film that best defends the demands and values of the Lgbtiqa+ community. In 2023 two women and three men directors represent this defence the length and breadth of the continent with four productions from Argentina and one from Colombia.
“This selection reflects the plurality and diversity of Lgbtiqa+ realities and particularly those of trans people”, says Gehitu. The winners of the 2023 Inside Out 2Slgbtq+ Film Festival Awards were announced this weekend in Toronto where $32,000 in prizes were handed out to various 2Slgbtq+ filmmakers. Bendita Film Sales has grown its slate acquiring Itsaso Arana’s directorial debut “The Girls Are Alright,” (“Las chicas están bien”).
The acquisition marks the latest pick up by the Tenerife based-outfit following recent announcements on Juan Sebastián Torales’ “Almamula,” and Lois Patiño’s “Samsara,” both featuring at the Berlinale. The film has already secured domestic distribution in Spain with Elástica Films.
“Itsaso gave us the chance to read one of the first versions of the script for ‘The Girls Are Alright.’ We immediately fell in love and realized that we were dealing with a singular talent, with a unique vision,” said Luis Renart, head of Bendita Film Sales. “It has been a pleasure to follow the evolution of this project and to finally discover this beautiful, festive and unique film, which we are thrilled to bring to audiences around the world,” he added.
