- When Mac is put into a dream state to help him recall key evidence found in Nikola Tesla's secret lab that could stop Codex's deadly plot, he encounters Nikola Tesla, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison...and his mother.
- After receiving a concussion and suffering amnesia, Mac takes a dangerous memory restoration drug to gain a clue to find where Nikola Tesla hid a weapon that Codex is seeking. In his lucid dream, Mac encounter Tesla, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham, and figures from his past that both give him hints and attempt to thwart his progress.—Gislef
- San Francisco, 1922
Nikola Tesla and his companion Charles are walking down the street, when men surround them and the leader demand the map. Tesla insists that his device is to deter violence, and Charles shoots them and gets Tesla to cover. Tesla pulls a b7ulb out of a nearby streetlamp and throws it, knocking out several of the shooters. The others run away, and Charles sees a Codex tattoo on one man's wrist. The two men run off before the shooters can return with reinforcement.
The Present
Riley is sleeping Mac's couch, and wakes up to hear him working with power tools. She goes to Mac's workshop, and he says that he's working on a carbon scrubber and asks her to help. Mac makes it clear that he doesn't want to talk about it, and Desi comes in. He show them that he made then "apocalypse backpacks" and says that they need to do something after they stop Codex from destroying the world.
Matty calls them to Phoenix, and Mac arrives with coffee for everyone. She tells Mac that Russ broke James' code, and Russ explains that he dug into James' life and discovered that the answer to breaking the code was Steve McQueen's birthday since he was in James' favorite movie, The Great Escape. He didn't ask Mac because he needed objectivity. Everyone else looks at Mac, and he tells them to stop protecting him. The code leads to an abandoned home that no one has lived in since 1903.
Mac, Russ, Desi, and Riley break into the house and spread out to search the place. Mac figures that a scientist there and finds books on a bookshelf laid out on like the periodic table. He finds a switch that opens a secret panel and they go into the chamber beyond. There are plans for motors, generators, and a gun-like device name "Shiva". There's also a Tesla coil, and Mac realizes that Tesla was the owner. Desi finds a photo of Tesla with Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, in a DXS lab. Mac says that Tesla was always trying to create giant weapons, and Russ figures that Tesla was doing it for the DXS.
A dog barks outside, and Desi goes to investigate. Meanwhile, the others find a map with an "X" on it. Mac figures the room is a cipher, and Desi comes in and says that five men are breaking in. Mac closes the door and Scarlett and her team come in through the house doors. The Codex operatives search the house, while in the room Mac spots a camera obscura. They use it to watch Scarlett and the others, and Mac recognizes them. He supercharges some wires and opens the door, and when two of the operatives come in, they step on the wires and are shocked unconscious.
The team attacks the others, while the wires cause a fire. Desi and Scarlett fight, and he gets hit in the head. When he wakes up, he's at Phoenix and the others are watching him. He's concussed and amnesiac, and Russ says that they need Mac and his memories to break the code. Russ explains that Codex set them up to decode the map, and the operatives took the map. Riley points out that Mac said they needed the room to decode the map, but Mac doesn't remember why. Matty tells Boxer to reach out to Dr. Cheryl Werner at DARPA, while the others look for information on Shiva. Mac says that Tesla used to lecture at the Markridge Scientific Institute.
Mac, Russ, Desi, and Riley go to Markridge and they start looking through Tesla's files. The librarian, Karen, figures that they're students and asks them to leave. Russ tries to charm her, claiming to be a history professor, but Karen doesn't believe him. Russ continues and says that he's looking for a manuscript, and Karen says that she'll find it. As he goes with Karen, Desi and Riley continue their search and Riley admits that she's worried about Mac since James and Lasky both died recently. Desi admits that she doesn't know what to do.
Russ comes back and warns that he bought them some time but Karen will soon have them thrown out. They continue their search and Russ finds a file from 11/9/37 with 26 letters in it. He figures that Tesla encoded his work, and they look for4 everything dated 11/9/37.
When Cheryl comes in, Matty explains that they're going to give him a drug that will help him regain his memories. When Mac wonders if it's safe, Cheryl snickers and tells Mac that is isn't safe. She asks him if he's ever had a psychotic break. When Mac says he hasn't, Matty tells him that patients have had severe reactions to the drug. She tells him that he doesn't have to do it, but Mac figures that they have to do. Matty warns that the only thing that will pull him out is the adrenaline rush from finding what he's looking for.
Cheryl administers the drug, and Mac finds himself at Tesla'a house in 1922, in the middle of a party. A woman 2who Mac doesn't recognize tells him he should be in hiding or he won't be able to stop the end of the world. Once the woman walks away, a nuclear bomb goes off outside the window in the distance.
Cheryl tells Matty and Bozer that Mac's vitals are up. Meanwhile, Mac looks at the mushroom cloud and then turns as the woman returns. She says that she needs a drink, and leads him off. She says that he name is Ellen, and Mac says that he doesn't know what to do and he feels loss. Mac remembers that he's there for Tesla, and Ellen goes off to greet another man.
Edison and Bell come over to Mac, and Edison tells Mac that he doesn't belong there because it's a party for scientists, not killers. Mac recognizes them, and says that he is a scientist and wonders why they're there. Edison says that he and Tesla are working at DXS to save the world, and Mac doesn't deserve to talk to Tesla. He grabs a bottle of wine from Bell and heats it up with match to remove a cork. Bell and Edison are impressed, and Edison says that Tesla will see Mac now.
As Mac goes into Tesla's room, a frat boy named Donnie grabs Mac and slams him down on a table. Ellen shows up and tells Mac that the drug, DMT, can bring up all kinds of memories including his ninth grade bully. Ellen knocks Donnie out with a bottle and says that they should move on.
Cheryl warns Matty and Bozer that Mac is experiencing long-term memories, and warns that the DMT usage isn't a precise science.
Russ and the others go through Tesla's letters and Desi finds a seemingly nonsense letter about Tesla and his favorite pigeon. Going over the letters, Russ figures that the references to the pigeon are a reference to where Shiva is hidden. He works out that 11/9/37 are coordinates to a ranch in California. There was a gold mine there, and Russ realizes that the code refers to gold.
The trio hear Karen arguing with men that they can't be there, and realize the men are Codex. The two men Codex operatives push past Karen, and Desi shoves a shelf of books on them so they can escape.
Mac finds himself at the bar, and Mac sees a martini glass with blue letters floating in it. She tells Mac that a man is watching him, and Mac knows who. Tesla walks past and Mac remembers that he's there to talk to Tesla. Something sucks air out of the room, and Mac can't breathe. Everyone else collapses, Lasky comes in and Mac sees him. Lasky accuses Mac of letting him die. Mac says that he did so to save everyone else. Unimpressed, Lasky tells Mac that his kids will grow up without a father just like his kids will. He puts Tesla's compass that Mac has been holding back in Mac's hand, and whispers that he hopes "he" finds Mac.
Cheryl warns Matt and Boxer that Mac's vitals are spiking. Matty calls Russ and the others at the ranch, and asks what their status is. Russ tells her what they've found. Russ figures that they won't be able to Shiva unless Mac remembers what he found in the house.
Mac goes to the hidden room, and Lasky follows him. Ellen shows up and tells Lasky to beat it, and she's got it. Once Lasky leaves, Ellen takes the compass and points out that it's covered in blood. Mac can't remembers why he's there or who he is. Ellen tells him that she knows who he is, and says that it's been a while since he last saw her. She sings "Itsy Bitsy Spider", and Mac realizes that Ellen is his mother. She points out that she died when Mac was five, and figures that he was hoping that she hadn't created File 47. Ellen says that she did, and explains that she did it to save the planet. She explains that there was no other way, and tells Mac that his air scrubber is too little, too late. Mac says that she missed most of his life, and Ellen tells him that she was in his head and his blood. He says that James is gone and there's nothing holding him to reality, and that he really needs Ellen. Mac asks her to tell him what to do, and Ellen tells him that he's ready.
Ellen walks off into the crowd, and Mac finds himself facing a man in a suit: himself.
Cheryl reports that Mac's fear centers are lighting up and his vitals are off the chart. Bozer warns to shut it down, but Matty tells him that Mac would want to continue.
Scarlett and her men dig a quarter mile west of the coordinates, while Mac watches them through binoculars. He says that they have to get the weapon before Codex, and they can't wait for Mac to rem3ember.
Dream Mac Suit tells Mac that he knows Codex is right, but Mac insists that they can't lose their humanity. He insists that Mac believes it deep down in his core, but Mac shoves him to the floor and enters Tesla's room. Dream Mc disappears, and when Mac enters the room Tesla tells him that he's taking too long and his friends need him.
Russ, Riley, and Desi enter the gold mine and wander around, lost. Riley finds a lamp but the kerosene is dry. Desi figures that they can use what Mac taught them, and uses iron scraps hat are flammable to make a torch.
Mac looks at the map and tries to remember, and Tesla tells him that his mind is cluttered. He advises Mac to slow down, and Mac realizes that the compass was the cool but it's wrong. He realizes that it shows east is west, and Mac wakes up. He calls the others and says that the map is in reverse directions, east instead of west. The trio find a door and enter the room beyond. There's a trunk and Russ says that he has a way to get it out. They use a mine cart and put the trunk on it to move the weapon, but find Scarlett and her men waiting for them.
Mac tries to work out how Shiva works with magnetism, and Russ calls Mac to tell him that they're in trouble, Desi calls to Scarlett, pointing out that the walls are unstable. Scarlett calls back that they can wait, and the trio retreat. Scarlett reluctantly leads her men in but figures that it's a trap. Mac calls and confirms that the Codex operatives are wearing Kevlar. He says that the trio have to get some space between them and the operatives, and the trio enters the room they found the trunk in, close the door, and barricade it. They open the trunk, and Mac says that it's a generator and they need to repair it with wire.
As the operatives try to break down the door, Mac has Desi find a mine telephone. He walks her through using the wire to generate an electrical field. The machine powers up the generator, and when the operatives comes in they're thrown around and knocked unconscious by the magnetism running through their Kevlar vests. Desi lights a torch and calls in that they're okay. Mac explains that the striking plates in the vests were made out of metal, so the magnetism in the generator tossed them around. Scarlett has escaped, and the trio pack up the generator and leaving.
That night at Phoenix, Mac figures that Shiva was designed to destroy other weapon. Bozer asks Mac what is was like in his memories. He remembers what he went through, but just says that it was fine.
That night at Mac's house, Desi makes soup for the two of them. She asks if he wants to talk about anything, saying he seems different, but Mac tells her that he's just tired. Desi gives him an antique compass and tells him that he's not lost. Mac kisses her and Desi kisses him back. After a moment he turns away, and sees his dream self outside staring at him.
