- Atanas Burov (Assen Blatechki) is considered the most influential politician in Bulgaria's history. The movie is about him and his love story, with Dilyana Popova as the main female character.
- Old American reporter George Smith (Ben Cross) nostalgically goes back to his memories from the distant 1944 at the end of World War II when he was sent by his newspaper to take interview with prominent Bulgarian banker Atanas Burov (Assen Blatechky). George was secretly transferred to Bulgaria through Serbia.
The young American (nathan Cooper) finds it hard to orient himself in the dramatic events unfolding in the Balkans at the time. He risks his own survival as he falls in love with the banker's young secretary, Maria (Dilyana Popova) , who in turn is desperately in love with her boss. George is initially met with distrust, but subsequently becomes the banker's best friend, who turns out to have quite an eccentric character, but in the same time is a great patriot. The communist Red Army of Stalin is now on its way to enter Bulgaria and establish a pro-Soviet regime supported by local guerrillas. The rich banker decides to send his secretary together with the young Western reporter out of Bulgaria to save them. Maria vanishes without a trace during their escape from Bulgaria. Over the years, the rescued American has been looking for his lost love and all possible information about her but has always reached to a dead-end street. What happened to Maria? Did she flee from him to return to the banker, was she kidnapped by guerrilla groups or something else happened to her: he never managed to find out. What remains is only the memory of her, of a banker and of a country at a crossroads that will always stay in his heart.
