Amanda Burton is back!
bosporan24 May 2022
A dramatic opening scene which sees the welcome reintroduction of Amanda Burton reprising her role as Sam Ryan. This beefs up the cast significantly following a few weaker seasons.

The plotline is routine, centred around the thorny topic of data privacy. Unfortunately this occasionally descends into unnecessary expository polemic rather than focussing on solving the crime of the week. The core team are good actors and play well together, but some of the supporting characters are weak, especially law-enforcement types who are condescendingly portrayed as stupid, arrogant and bigoted.

Overall a decent start with promise for the season.

I'm not feeling the love

Last series was dire. This story, when there is one is very good. The stab at this romance between Nikki and Jack is awful. I'm all for character development and change but Jacks feeble attempts at not suddenly falling head long in love is cringe making. It's just weird for me and ruined the flow. I'm also not sold that the new forensic investigator on the team is not a box ticking exercise. Let's have two stereotypes rolled into one minority actress. Black & Lesbian. The series needs more about it if these three are to take on the mantle. Good to see Amanda Burton back in a strong story. It does smack of struggling a bit bringing in old characters though. Hoping it'll improve.

The Perfect start.

Following the shooting of a prominent Politician, Doctor San Ryan calls on The Lyell team to get to the bottom of what happened.

They have gone all out for this one, and I don't just mean the return of the legendary Doctor Ryan. Ed Whitmore for my money has written arguably the show's best episodes, so it's no surprise that he penned this.

Amanda Burton, looking fantastic, it was almost as if Dr Ryan hadn't been away, she stepped back into the role perfectly, interesting to see the journey the character has been on. There is no denying the presence Burton has, she elevated this.

I am wondering if this is going to turn into a story of old Vs new, will it develop into a battle between Nikki and Sam?

It'll be interesting to see how this format works, a six part story instead of the usual two part stories.

An intriguing mystery, I really did enjoy it, I loved the scale of it. Are they veering more towards The Line of Duty style series?

Production values are incredibly high, it looks fantastic, the visuals and music are truly on point.

I know you shouldn't really comment on appearances, but how much training has David Caves been doing, he's looking in incredible shape.

The BBC has promised a lot in its hundredth year, Silent Witness feels like the start of that, hopefully this is the standard going forward, I thought this was fantastic.

Lots of little titbits for long term fans of the show.

For me, this delivered on every level, I wanted it to be great, it exceeded even my very high expectations, 10/10.

Perfect series, love the Nikki and Jack story, so much chemistry there.

Also, bringing Amanda Burton back, great move!

I hope there will be a lot of new seasons coming to us.
