The History Channel filed a trademark for use of the name in October, 2007. Less than a week later, The Sci-Fi Channel filed a similar patent (November 5).
History aired an episode of its series, UFO Files, entitled UFO Hunters in 2005. Sci-Fi ordered its reality series from the production company that gave us Ghost Hunters. History filed a "currently in use" claim, while Sci-Fi was forced to file an "intent to use" claim. Both networks changed their originally-intended air times so neither could claim "prior use." Of course, The History Channel filed their claim as such, even though the working title for the series was UFO Road Trip.
While neither has plans to change the title of their respective shows at this time, History's previous use and earlier filing of claim does not ensure it will be granted license. However, The History Channel's UFO Hunters is "in the can" (episodes have been recorded, edited, and prepped for airing), while The Sci-Fi Channel's UFO Hunters was billed as a "special" and is currently in-development.
Neither claim has been granted yet.
