Bad execution, acting is average
namrathanagaraj7 August 2020
The twists are good as it is hard to guess the suspense. Engaging subject. But very poor screenplay. The dubbing and acting do not match well. First half is boring.

Warning: Spoilers
Good story line but failed to execute it. Over acting from Ramesh, could have been done better. Many series are better than this

Sherlock Holmes deductions
phharshu27 September 2020
Movie could have been a good one, only if they didn't try to imbibe Sherlock Holmes' quality and behaviors into the protagonist.

Few scenes are silly
lohitroyal28 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie has brilliant concept and execution quite decent. But the problems lies in the story. What was the blind girl doing in the pub alone. Why there were nobody in the club other than the two rapists? It was so silly to show one of the rapist in uniform to show that he was a cop. There was no reason why the 11 member team waited 4 long years to take the revenge. When Shivaji goes to the resort for the first time, he tells everything about the owner just by observing the surroundings. Shivaji says that he is an ex commercial pilot, but in the flashback he just looks like a casual theatre artist. Was he really a pilot? Or Does this mean Shivaji's over smartness overshadowed basic background verification a police officer has to perform? Or it was another flaw in the story? Ending is not convincing, as they show that home minister gets convinced to the lame report submitted by the investing officer. Cinematography and editing is excellent, Direction is also good. They should have worked on the story a bit more.

Brilliant writing and screenplay.
Nandapal-6758422 September 2022
Brilliant writing and screenplay. Story and the making keeps us engaged throughout the movie. Acting is sub-par. Genuinely the writer had given his best possible attempt (and succeeded) in adapting the story-line of "murder in the orient express" and added desi-elements to make it a proper sandalwood experience. Definitely everything worked except the casting and acting which wasn't bad but didn't felt very clever (or didn't matched the standards of the writing).

Gripping story and good screenplay keeps each scene interested. Decent music and strong visuals is a plus point. Acting wise everyone as aced their part. After clarity will make you find few flaws in the plot but still i would rate 10 just for keeping it short and just focused on story telling and gladly nothing commercial unwanted was inserted. Personally this was one of the best kannada thriller movie i saw after rangitaranga.

Good but can be better
valentinodashing16 July 2022
This movie is some what similar to Murder on the Orient Express with some extra masala. No doubt overall acting is good but here and there I could see over acting.

Best movie
Ayaan49496821 September 2022
Shivaji surathkal! Watched it on the edge of my seat! On a serious note this is the best suspense thriller movie I've watched in kannada after rangitharanga ! Horror-mystery-thriller by Ramesh Arvind is a epitome of Mystery movie which piques your interest in every detail which pops on ever fickle suspects and keeps you intrigued to the end. Shivaji Suratkal is not a regular kind of film. Though it's an investigation done by police, looks like more of a detective film. Parellel framing of two Stories in Screenplay is beautifully written. First hour is terrific with engaging sequences Pre climax is too good. Ramesh arvind is too good. He excelled in his role. Others are good with their roles. Songs and bgm are good. Perfectly synced with Screenplay. Cinematography and locations can be made as exception for this kind of detective thriller. Highly recommended.

Nice Suspense Thriller Warning: Spoilers
As the makers acknowledge, this movie is inspired from the novels of Agatha Christie and sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although the movie looks little tacky in the beginning with some over the top acting an imitation of Sherlock Holmes, it slowly builds up and gets really interesting in the second half. So definitely an enjoyable movie

Spoiler Alert This movie is influenced by the Oriental Express by Agatha Christie to a large extent. The concept is pretty similar

Story, Plot good, execution terrible
harrynimaggi17 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were 2 stories years apart which had a conjunction running through it.

To begin- I would have expected director and senior actor Ramesh to watch the movie before releasing. The beginning tempo just fails in the end.

Bad cuts, it wasnt linear or non linear ... the transition was too bad between story scenes.. The characters lacked the emotion in them. Just using props , lightings and sounds you cant bring in the feel this story actually needed.

A strong protagonist with successful cases behind him, with the intro confidence or should i say overconfidence shown in the initial part of the film just withers away without justification. Characters go missing and th eunrelaistc shot s make it a bit dumb.

Ex scene: When the minisiter son comes to get a room, he is walked thourgh an estate to his room with all fog, forest feel etc, but while investigation happens his room is shown as if inside a building with corridors. This is plain miss or lack of imagination of location.

Honestly I expected a bit more from Ramesh to add in the narrative. I wish he had seen the full movie before release to.

I am not sure if it was budget or timing, lot of loose ends and medicre acting and rush to finish the product just lost a real good franchise in kannada industry.

If at all a second attempt, then apart from story , please give all consideration to location, screenplay, cuts or editing and tone of the movie.

Story: 9 out of 10 Plot: 8 out of 10 Acting: 4 out of 10 editing: 1 out of 10 direction: 4 out of 10 Tone of movie: 3 out of 10.

Good luck.

Awesome fantastic thriller , it's a must watch movie. Ramesh Aravind is at his best performance. Screenplay is well written and is another highlight. Camera work is beautiful it has created the right mood for the film. The film scared me at few bits and the way the illusion is created is mind blowing. Best part is this a family entertainer we saw it with a group of 10 people and everyone loved it Cheers team we are waiting for the sequel.

Murder on the orient express
bheemaiah8 August 2020
The songs kill the movie. Otherwise a great movie. The graphics on the pigeons are very fake. Like a early 2000 video game. The dead pigeons were really badly made. There was too much focus on the detective. They could have made the hotel a little more dingy would have put some fear in audience.

Fabulous story of a desi Sherlock Holmes.
deepakondeepak29 February 2020
Actor Ramesh Aravind does a very commendable job. The character Shivaji Suratkal is written based on the character of Sherlock Holmes. The screenplay is quite gripping with past and present timeline moving parallel and the intersect at the climax.

Timeless Ramesh Aravind in Agatha Christie-esque movie.
veeresh12099 August 2020
Before I start writing about the movie, I need to talk about Ramesh Aravind first. The man does not age. If you see his Amruthvarshini and this movie back to back you would not guess that they are 23, yes freaking TWENTY THREE, years apart. He looks the same, maybe better now. And he, as usual, carries this movie forward with his grace and versatility. I wish he keeps giving such performances and entertain us.

Coming back to the movie, if you are "Detective" Genre enthusiast then some or the other time you would have wanted Sherlock Holmes to appear in a Agatha Christie novel!. No? Was it just me?. Ok. But if you did (or did not !), then you need to watch Shivaji Surathkal. The movie is inspired by these two greatest things that happened to detective genre. And it does so majestically.

The movie looks inspired from one of the finest novels of Agatha Christie. But it is not a remake or an adaptation, its central theme is original. One of the problems with the detective genres is to keep the attention of the viewers till the end, else the viewer will guess the climax and lose interest in the story. The story of Ranagiri Rahasya avoids this problem successfully. It keeps you guessing till the end. Editing and sound effects add to this distraction and creates a nice recipe to be enjoyed at the climax.

Though there are chinks in the story which could impact the overall watching experience, the movie is worth your time. Hope Akash Srivastsa pens more such movies in this series. Will it be a far of thought if I say that Shivaji Surathkal can be made into a graphic novel? Only one person can answer that.

Movie lacks intense passion in film making...an mediocre fare.
navdp21 February 2020
Bad music, mediocre screenplay, inept direction and sloppy climax makes this a dull watch. What would have been a great franchise in the making fails miserably to take off. Good idea but bad narrative and execution makes this a dull watch.

Movie story is excellent
Sanju-0702922 September 2022
Movie story is excellent nice suspense was build but the only thing I felt below par was the sound effects . Quite a few times I felt that the dialogues said by the actor Ramesh were unimpacted for me just because of lack of background music and sound effects I just wish if the music and sound effects was well handled most importantly I felt movie was dragged by 15 mins when there was no need often this kind of movies must leave audiences with an shocker impact rather than with a sweet ending well for kannada industry this kinda films are huge plus point one star is deducted because film failed for me in sound effects department and for dragging the film by 15 mins.

Not worth of hype createe
deekshithrshetty24 February 2020
First of all the title of the movie is disgusting, Really, "SHIVAJI SURATHKAL", Can't it be better? Sounds like old Darshan Movie title. Coming to the point movie isnt really a bad one, 8.9 rating as on date is unduly high. Story line is good, but implementation failed pathetically. Screenplay is dull boring. Dialogues are bookish rather colloquial. May be if this movie had released 3-4 years back it would have been a good movie, but today everyone expects something better, something different, which is absent in the movie. Starting 15 mins feels like adoption of Sherlock Holmes which is not tolerable to watch, dialogues delivery by Ramesh is too rough. Ramesh as a protagonist couldn't deliver what is expected from the character, acting is really horrible, I couldn't believe it is really Ramesh. Movie had a grip all over, but last 15-20 mins was just like to impress the audience, movie just wanted audience to get satisfied without any creativity. Plots were boring. Movie is watchable, but not in theatre spending money in theatre.

Terrible exaggerated acting
ravindra-g-rao26 June 2022
I'm disappointed by the exaggerated acting by experienced actors. The supposedly thriller turned into a comedy as soon as the hero has introduced. A better watch is rangitaranga.

Amazingggg
Hanan-3853222 September 2022
The movie is a suspense thriller, that carries two linked crime stories in parallel. It depicts the brilliance of an investigating police officer, Shivaji Suratkal, who sets out to solve one crime case, while fighting within him over another one. The interlacing of narrations keep the attention of viewers with lots of twists, and concludes the climax with a plausible ending. Just one word good watch for thriller Everything is Good Engageing and edgy A Murder Mystry with Horror Elements i cant Say or comment its A masterpiece thriller movie or Not but i cant give my word that in Kanada films 2020 its one of great Thriller Movie so who want to watch Just watch it out for one time it wont be disopointing. Give a try.

Brilliant
Sohum-8650222 September 2022
The reasons for watching this movie are many, one of them is that the effort to bring the audience an experience , visually, sound effects , camera work and time switch is a honest one Next is the casting, the role of each character has been tailor made to fit perfectly to the actor portraying it. Ramesh Arvind in his never before portrayal of a detective has done a very good job to bring justice to the fickle , methodical ,erratic , egoistic and brilliant character of a fictional and yet relatable Shivaji Surathkal. Credit also goes to the Direction and Editing work to make the movie engrossing and curious at times . Just when you think you have figured out the plot , there are twists in the movie which gets you onboard a roller coaster and you will start to enjoy the plot. There a few songs which are woven into the movie to help the story get more effect on people's emotions. They are made not to distract the audience but instead impatient to know more . Even the smallest character has a significant role to play and not just cast aside after a few scenes. They all add up to a huge puzzle and each are crucial piece of the same. Even if you have missed the opportunity to watch in theatres , which is a shame really but it is available online on OTT platform. Do watch this movie as this movie is a landmark movie #100 for Ramesh Aravind who has shed his family movie roles to play a complete shift in character. Kudos to the whole team and appreciate the effort . I hope to see more such movies in near future as the story oriented movies are less and less these days.

A thought provoking thriller
pramodbiligiri15 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At one point in this murder mystery which came out in 2020, Ramesh Aravind moves his gaze across some people seated before him and shouts, "How could you - a group of middle class people who shudder at the prospect of a police visit during passport verification - become killers? What's your motive??"

The case assigned to him is just one half of the puzzle that inspector Shivaji Surathkal (Ramesh) is trying to unravel in this story, and frankly he takes it up only because it's shoved upon him by a political bigwig. He has spent his last few years as if in a daze, ever since calamity struck his budding family and killed his wife and unborn child. Until then they were an idyllic upwardly mobile couple, living in Mysore and cut from the cleanest cloth: he from that old city itself and regarded as "Sherlock Holmes" by fellow policemen, his wife from Kodagu a brave lawyer.

Now dour faced and despondent, the middle class heart throb gets no space to act out our aspirations or entertain with comic timing. Instead you see him flit between a dramatic day in the past - variously referred to as four or five years ago - and a sullen present. The day he came home from work to find his pregnant wife missing, and then learned she has been murdered. Some detective work reveals the involvement of powerful people, but the trail runs cold right after and he's stonewalled.

Therefore, not only does our "hero" lack closure, he needs regular meds just to keep a straight narrative, or else will slip into hallucinations where the reality around him becomes a jumbled mess.

The present mysterious death (the son of the state's Home Minister) has our Holmes cooped up in a resort with its dozen guests, and you look forward to how he will fare in this Agatha Christie-like setting! They're pretty much the kind of people you'd expect to see in a resort: an Instagram photoblogger, an NRI couple from California, a documentary film maker ... etc. A stern faced palm reader comes across as the only threatening voice of the lot. A key figure who goes missing is the driver Anwar who guided the politico's son there.

Once the plot and this cast of characters is established, the story moves more slowly than you'd like. Even Ramesh isn't sure whether he's making progress or running in circles! He runs out of medication and the hallucinations return, along with flashbacks of happier times with his wife and the frantic investigation following her death. Will our hero give up again and leave us hanging too this time?

In its own way this movie probes the question of how ordinary people may respond when their political leaders - who're expected to act honourably and uphold justice - behave as if the rules don't apply to them. What if one brazen act by a big shot irreparably damages the lives of many people, linking their fates together (like in this movie)? And will a deaf patriarchy not pay heed until women start taking matters into their own hands?

The film also leaves some loose ends that you may have to tie up yourself. For starters, what kind of a name is Shivaji Surathkal for this Mysore-Kodagu pairing?? All of Ramesh's flashbacks prominently feature some Mysore landmark or the other (the palace, statue square etc). They even have a big photo of the palace holding up their keystand. Or, why is that dreadful event always referred to vaguely as 4-5 years ago (in this murder mystery which came out in 2020, as I wrote in the beginning). While in fact the exact time the protagonist starts to worry is told to us - shown on a clock face and underlined by loud ticks in the background.

On the whole, despite its uneven pace and some cliched police work, I found it a watchable movie with enough plot and character to keep me hooked.
