A bumpy Twin Peaks this week. Surprise horror, painfully drawn out moments, and at least one big revelation: Bobby Briggs seems to be Becky’s father. And at some point Shelly and Bobby were married, as we now know that Shelly’s last name is Briggs (more on the state of that marriage in a moment). So yes, it would seem that I was wrong last week about Leo being Becky’s father (and perhaps wrong about Becky killing Leo). But I would like to remind you that Shelly is still wearing that mysterious ring on a chain around her...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

Since 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson took to Twitter to strike a deal with Wendy’s for free chicken nuggets, he’s gained newfound fame—both on the Internet and in real life.
Last Wednesday, the Reno, Nevada high school student asked the fast food chain on their famously feisty Twitter account how many retweets he would need to get free chicken nuggets for a year. “18 million,” the brand responded.
Though this seems like a far-fetched goal—Ellen DeGeneres currently holds the record with 3.2 million for her Oscars selfie—Wilkerson went for it anyway, pleading with his followers to help him out.

Vanity Fair interviews director John Hillcoat (Lawless, The Road) on his controversial Superbowl ad for Coke. I personally loved it. The right-wingers hate its reminder of America as melting pot.
NPR Jehane Noujaim's The Square, nominated for Best Documentary, is having trouble getting screened at home in Egypt
Theater Mania interviews the great Charles Busch (Die Mommy, Die!) about his career and new play "The Tribute Artist" in which he does impressions of Marilyn, Bette Davis, and Katharine Hepburn among others. (I met Mr Busch at the anniversary Cabaret screening last year and he was so sweet)
Gothamist Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar campaign hits Lincoln Center soon for screenings and discussions of Children of Men and Gravity here in NYC. Ah c'mon Lincoln Center. Throw in Y Tu Mama Tambíen (still his best picture) and we'll totally be talking!
Pajiba on the whitewashing of Egyptian mythology on screen. Why not cast people of color.

When we first meet 13-year-old Jacob in Kat Candler’s Hellion, he’s hopping on his motorbike and furiously speeding away. In the next scene, he’s demolishing a vehicle in the parking lot of a high school football game as heavy-metal guitars scream. He bashes in the windshield with a bat as his friends decorate the doors with red spray paint. Jacob even seems to get one last shot in after he realizes that a few angry adults have spotted them.
These are deeply angry young men, but Jacob is more nuanced than a rage monster thanks to the...

23:00 And just like that, it's all over. Tina thanks everyone for making it the "beautiful mess [they] hoped it would be", but I hoped to see more of them! Yes, that's right, I'd have been happy with it being the Tina and Amy show, I can't help it.
22:58 There's only one award left, and Johnny Depp is here to present it! It's for Best Motion Picture - Drama, and thankfully, all of...

This morning, Aziz Ansari, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde announced the nominees for the 71st annual Golden Globes. The ceremony, hosted by Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler, will take place on January 12th, 2014.
Of course, the list reads mostly as one would expect, but there are a few things worth mentioning. For one, it’s great to see Captain Phillips‘ Barkhad Abdi getting so much recognition. First he received a SAG nomination and now a Golden Globe nod. Could be on pace for an Oscar as well?
Speaking of Captain Phillips, which is one of my favorite films of the year, Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass also scored nominations, as did the film itself for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
A couple other interesting things to note are Rush earning a big nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama, something that I did not expect, and The Wolf of Wall Street finally getting some awards love.

Award season continued today with the AFI Awards in Beverly Hills. The organization honors 10 outstanding movies and films, while also recognizing achievements with their special awards. George Clooney's The Descendants is among the big-screen honorees, which also include Moneyball, Bridesmaids, J. Edgar, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and The Help. Leonardo DiCaprio and Rooney Mara, in Lanvin, came out to represent their films as did Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer, and Chloe Moretz. It was just the latest suited-up appearance for Leo and George since they also stepped out for last night's Critics' Choice Awards. George had girlfriend Stacy Keibler by his side on the carpet, but it was George and Brad Pitt's bromance inside that took the spotlight. Representing the small screen were Claire Danes and Aaron Paul, whose respective Homeland and Breaking Bad got recognition in the TV category along with Modern Family and The Good Wife.

Ethan Miller/Getty Celebrity Apprentice star Annie Duke is a single mom by label only. The 43-year-old is quick to point out to MomLogic that between her live-in boyfriend of four years Joe Reitman, an “extremely involved” ex-husband in Ben Duke and a nanny, she’s hardly going it alone.
“I have a relatively easy single parent life — we do support each other so much in our parenting and really do co-parent in every sense of the word,” she says of Ben. “When people ask me to speak about being a single mother, I often say I couldn’t even begin to speak upon those issues!” Emerging from their divorce unscathed is a source of pride for the one-time couple, who together are parents to Maud, 14, Leo, 11, Lucy, 9, and Nell, 7. Annie adds,
“I wish that every divorced couple would remember this: You chose your partner, so take responsibility for that decision.

With so much fuss being made about J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, it's easy to forget that there is another successful franchise out there with Star... in the title. That would be Stargate, which is due for its own sort of makeover later this year with the premiere of Stargate Universe. This is no sign that the concept is struggling, though. Indeed, the slew of awards that Stargate productions won at the recent Leo Awards in Vancouver, British Columbia (the home base of CinemaSpy) shows that it continues to be admired.
The Leo Awards are presented by the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of B.C.. They were established in 1998 to celebrate excellence in film and television productions that are made in the province. Stargate series and movies are largely filmed in Vancouver.
