Like the previous collaboration between Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig, 2007's Hannah Takes the Stairs, Nights and Weekends is easier to appreciate than it is to enjoy. Actually, I can't imagine many people enjoying it, in all honesty. I could similarly see some not really wanting to even appreciate it either, given how feel-bad and uncomfortable it is.
Lots of other movies with this kind of style and focus on flawed characters balance out uncomfortable drama with similarly uncomfortable comedy, but Nights and Weekends keeps things serious throughout. It's hard to watch, but there's a realism and uncompromising authenticity to certain scenes that I have to admire.
