RTÉ Sport's documentary, 'Ireland's Grand Slam Journey' has been nominated for an award at the 2010 Banff World Television Awards. The Ifta award-winning rugby documentary was produced and directed for RTÉ by Dave Berry (The Dubs: Story of a Season) and Nathan Nugent (editor, Waveriders). The Banff World Television Awards, known as the 'Rockies', look to recognise creativity and innovation from the world's television programming. Chosen from 900 entries from more than 43 countries 'Ireland's Grand Slam Journey' is one of six nominees in the Sports Documentary category and the only Irish nomination at the festival.

Waveriders, the acclaimed documentary directed by Dublin native Joel Conroy and coming out on DVD March 16, is based around an unusual premise: modern-day surfing’s Irish-American roots. The award-winning film traces the history of the “father of modern surfing,” Irish-Hawaiian George Freeth, as well as showcasing the work of Ireland’s top surfers in incredible footage atop Ireland’s monster swells. Conroy’s personal background both behind the camera and riding the waves comes through in the intensely visual focus of Waveriders, which brings the viewer into the ocean with Irish surfers including Richard Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Easkey Britton, Kevin Naughton and nine-time world champion Kelly Slater. “I’ve been in production for 15 years, and I wanted to make the step over,” Conroy told Irish America in a recent interview. Ifta winning productions 'Waveriders', directed by Joel Conroy, and the animation short 'Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty' have both picked up awards at the 10th Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Produced by Margo Harkin of Besom Productions, 'Waveriders' scooped the Outstanding Achievement in Action Sports Filmmaking Award. The doc is currently on release in cinemas throughout Ireland and UK through Element Pictures Distribution.

Director Joel Conroy talks to Iftn prior to the nationwide release of his Ifta Award winning surfing documentary 'Waveriders', opening on Friday April 3rd. 'Waveriders' links Ireland's contemporary surfers and the story of the sport's unlikely Irish roots through the life of George Freeth, the son of an Irishman who was responsible for the rebirth of surfing in Hawaii. The doc explores the international surfing phenomenon and the recognition of Ireland as a prime surfing location. Shot on locations in Ireland, the UK and the Us, the film climaxes when the Irish and international surfers come together on Sligo's Mullaghmore beach to conquer the biggest wave ever to be surfed off Irish shores. Irish surfers to feature include; Ritchie Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies and Easky Britton, alongside World Champion surfer Kelly Slater and brothers Chris Malloy, Dan Malloy and Keith Malloy.

Ifta nominated feature documentary 'Waveriders', directed by Joel Conroy, will receive its Us Premiere at the 24th Santa Barbara International Film Festival on the 28th Jan '09. The film is set to be released by Element Pictures Distribution across nationwide cinemas in Ireland and the UK on 3rd April 2009. `Waveriders' is a co-production between Inís Films based in Dublin, Ireland and Besom productions based in Derry, Northern Ireland.
