• Milly Carter : [Jill arrives at her apartment where she discovers her roommate, Milly, talking to Anthony]  Jill, this is Mr. Michael Anthony. He's been waiting to see you about something very important.

  Michael Anthony : That's quite true, Miss Mayfield. If we may be alone for a few moments?

  Milly Carter : Well, all right. I'll be in the bedroom, Jill. Just holler if you need anything.

  [Departs] 

  Jill Mayfield : [to Jill]  All right.

  [to Anthony] 

  Jill Mayfield : Well, will you sit down, Mr. Anthony?

  Michael Anthony : Thank you.

  [Anthony sits] 

  Jill Mayfield : What's this all about?

  Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase]  I have a gift for you, Miss Mayfield.

  Jill Mayfield : Gift? What kind of a gift?

  Michael Anthony : [Displaying a check]  A cashier's check for $1,000,000.

  Jill Mayfield : One million ..

  [Stops. Suspiciously] 

  Jill Mayfield : Are you an actor? Is this your idea of a joke?

  Michael Anthony : I assure you, Miss Mayfield, I am neither connected with the theater nor in the habit of playing practical jokes!

  [Holding up check again] 

  Michael Anthony : This check is not stage money.

  Jill Mayfield : What's it for? Who's giving it to me?

  Michael Anthony : I cannot tell you the name of the donor. He must remain anonymous. As to what it's for - well that's for you to decide. There are no strings attached. The gift tax has been paid.

  Jill Mayfield : Well, I don't know what to say.

  Michael Anthony : There's nothing you need say.

  [Withdrawing a form from his briefcase] 

  Michael Anthony : However, I must ask you to sign this document. It pledges you not to reveal to anyone, except your husband when you marry, the exact amount of this gift or the manner in which you received it. If you do, you will forfeit whatever remains. Is that clear?

  Jill Mayfield : Yes, I guess so.

  Michael Anthony : Then sign right there.

  [Jill signs and Anthony reclaims the agreement] 

  Michael Anthony : Thank you, Miss Mayfield.

  [Anthony hands Jill the check] 

  Michael Anthony : And now my business is concluded. Good evening.

  [Anthony turns to leave] 

  Jill Mayfield : Good evening.
