The mysterious Becky with the Good Hair has entered the chat again with the release of Beyonce‘s new album Cowboy Carter.
If you were unaware, Becky is an infamous and mysterious character that Beyonce first sang about on her 2016 album Lemonade. At the time, it was largely believed that she was a reference to a woman that Jay-Z had an affair with.
Eight years later, Dolly Parton referenced Becky on “Dolly P,” an interlude that she recorded for Beyonce‘s new album to introduce her cover of “Jolene.”
“You know that hussy with the good hair you sing about? Reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flamin’ locks of auburn hair,” Dolly said. “Bless her heart. Just a hair of a different color, but it hurts just the same.”
After Dolly brought her up again, you might be wondering about the full story behind Becky.

Orbiting somewhere around the Chris Rock-fronted Good Hair and Sion Sono’s Exte, An Asian Ghost Story riffs on wigs, their multiple lives, the mortality of hair, and its afterlife.
Floated into this exploration is the significance of Hong Kong as a midpoint between China and the west, with director Bo Wang using hair exports from the mid-20th century to tell a story of an under-documented industry, broader Asian industrialisation, and the barriers posed by the US to Chinese trade.
Wang’s playful, elegantly experimental film weaves eerie supernatural investigation and multiple potted histories with statically shot street scenes captured with lo-fi film stock in parallel with a narration told from the point of view of a factory worker who speculates on how a wig can retain the spirits of those whose hair was shorn to make them.
Wang’s affection for his subject matter is clear, but he also seems to delight.

Despite what some conspiracy theorists think, Chris Rock hitting the road for a comedy tour right after presenting at the 2022 Oscars was just a coincidence. It’s not like the performer, 30-plus years on the scene, wasn’t going to have a successful run. But Will Smith smacking Rock on live television certainly ensured sold-out arenas for the next stretch of time
The 57-year-old comic kicked off the tour at the 1,200-seat venue The Wilbur in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday night. Reports say he received multiple standing ovations before he even opened his mouth, with someone in the crowd shouting “F–k Will Smith!” getting hearty applause of his own.
But if people were expecting a lengthy comedic inquiry into Sunday night’s transgression, they may have been disappointed. While he did open with a baiting, “so how was your weekend?” Rock confessed that he had a night of pre-written material to get to,...

The 2022 Oscars were all anyone could talk about Sunday night. From Ariana DeBose's historic win to heartwarming red carpet reunions, the evening was meant to acknowledge Hollywood's sheer brilliance, but it turned out to be an unforgettable night for all the wrong reasons.
Like most viewers, the heated altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith threw me for a loop. The Academy's edits in the US broadcast made the encounter look choppy until raw footage later appeared online. Following Rock's tasteless joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her buzzcut (a result of her hair loss and alopecia), the "King Richard" star approached the presenter on the Oscars stage and slapped him in the face. He followed up the hit by telling Rock twice, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*cking mouth." Was it real? Was it staged? That didn't matter to me. Because after my initial shock wore off,...

Another year, and another daunting challenge to keep up with the number of streaming options available from the big online players. And to mark January 1st, there’s some new content to enjoy on the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus and HBO Max, among others, as well as several notable changes in licensing agreements that may affect how you can watch your favorite shows.
On Netflix, the biggest fresh release is the third season of Cobra Kai, which has been a hit for the service since making the move from YouTube. Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. Other highlights, meanwhile, include Netflix documentary The Minimalists: Less Is Now, and a lot of licensed movies ranging from Bonnie and Clyde to Goodfellas.

It’s finally time to start shedding off the terrible year of 2020 and begin thinking positively about 2021, and Netflix is making that fairly easy by starting the new year off the right way. With its first content drop of the month, the world’s most popular streaming service is proving how it got that title with a massive selection of movies and shows that are certain to tickle the fancy of subscribers looking for new stuff to watch.
If you’re a fan of Robert Downey Jr., today is a really great day for you, as the prolific actor has had two additions added to Netflix in a single drop. The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. For much of the world, 2020 has embodied the exact traits of a well-crafted horror movie: twisted, uncompromising, and something nobody really saw coming. If nothing else, the unsettling nature of a year that has been hobbled by both a global pandemic and a divisive election cycle (among other eerie twists) is a reminder that scariness comes in many forms, and the traditional horror formula that many of us celebrate on Halloween is just one piece of the equation. Many of the movies released this year are scary in unexpected ways, either because they tap into timely anxieties or illustrate the precise nature of terror in these uncertain times.
Here are 13 recent disturbing highlights. Don’t watch them alone.

The seven-minute animated short about a girl and her afro hair has won fans and critical acclaim – but the battle is far from won
On its release last year, Hair Love, a sweetly poignant film about an African-American father’s efforts to style his daughter Zuri’s curls, became the latest in a handful of productions to take a deeper look at the cultural significance of afro hair. Chris Rock’s 2009 documentary Good Hair memorably critiqued the billion-dollar black haircare industry, while 2018 rom-com Nappily Ever After explored one woman’s fraught relationship with her natural hair in a society that was openly hostile towards it. It is vital that this subject continues to be explored, not least because incidents in the Us, where a student wrestler was forced to cut his dreadlocks, and in the UK, where a pupil has been punished for wearing her afro, show hair discrimination is still rife.

The plight of black women and their hair has birthed enough cinematic investigations to yield its own subgenre, from Chris Rock’s astute 2009 documentary “Good Hair” to the 2020 Oscar-nominated animated short “Hair Love.” These endearing cultural explorations are mere preludes to the exuberance of “Bad Hair,” a rambunctious, overindulgent comedy-horror excursion from “Dear White People” director Justin Simien. Equal parts vintage Brian De Palma thriller and race-centric corporate fashion satire in the spirit of “Putney Swope,” .
With 2014’s “Dear White People,” Simien became one of the most exciting writer-director voices in black cinema, merging scathing and satiric observations with genuine insights into contemporary African American frustrations. “Bad Hair” turns the clock back to 1989, elaborating on the thorny issues surrounding black women in popular culture, and may as well be a prequel set in the same snarky universe. However, “Dear White People” managed a tricky balance between snark and genuine social commentary,...

Good hair speaks for itself, but this goes double during the holiday season. Sure, you can certainly sport your everyday blowout or go-to topknot at the office Christmas party or to your Bff's gift exchange. But think about it: If you're swapping out your usual jeans and T-shirt uniform for a festive cocktail dress, shouldn't your hair be next level, too? You don't have to go full glam every time a calendar invite pops up on your phone, but you should do something to make it feel special. From brushed-gold barrettes to pro status curling irons, these are all the tools you need to achieve celeb-inspired holiday hair. Did someone say photo time?...

Think 2016 was a dumpster fire of awfulness? Imagine how terrible it could have been if we didn't have Beyoncé. All things considered, it wasn't too shabby a year for Miss Carter, as she is closing it out with nine Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year for Lemonade. As for the rest of her best moments, it's nearly impossible to wean down every single thing she did, but here are 17 of her biggest, best, most Beyoncé moments of the past 365 days, give or take.

Much has been said and written about the receiving and processing of music as a spiritual experience, either in the religious sense, as a way of attempting a connection with God, or in terms of feeling the lift to one’s emotions, the rush of excitement that a great piece of music well-played can offer to the human body and mind. The emotional aspect of musical transportation is pretty easily accessed, on its basest and highest planes. (Just ask any fan of screamo or Yo-Yo Ma.) And there are plenty of folks who will talk to you about how contemporary Christian artists as varied as Keith Green, Becoming Saints and Andre Crouch provide an aural pathway straight to the ear of God. For me, true incorporeal experiences with music are fairly rare. But when I hear the music of late, indisputably great jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, or see him play,...

When Beyoncé dropped her album Lemonade, it was rightfully praised as a huge artistic achievement, one brilliantly orchestrated (and marketed). It’s already become an anthem for women done wrong and moving on. However, it also started the hunt for the, “Becky with the good hair” and people wondering who the heck her husband Jay Z cheated with. Entire articles have been written about who the so-called Becky could be. Then there was the whole thing about whether being called a “Becky” is a slur or not. (The answer is a big no. I do though feel sorry for women

As soon as Beyonce's Lemonade premiered on HBO, changing the lives of Beckys With The Good Hair worldwide, we knew it would provide ample fodder for late night talk shows. And so we were quickly treated to Stephen Colbert White Mansplaining it to us and James Corden's "visual monologue." Seth Meyers took a little longer to get in formation, but may have come up with the best one so far. The women in Meyers' office, inspired by Queen Bey, are taking baseball bats to glass doors, flipping off everyone, commandeering the conference room table and covering it with flowers and shabby chic chairs, and blowing up Meyers' office, destroying all of his comic books. All this and Meyers being called a "bitch boy," below:...

Since Beyoncé dropped her new album, Lemonade, last week, fans have worked hard to decipher her heartfelt lyrics, while a few stars have come forward to let the public know that they aren't featured on the project. In the wake of "Becky With the Good Hair"-gate, Beyoncé's father, Mathew Knowles, spoke to E! News on Tuesday and offered up an interesting theory about the hidden meaning behind some of the songs on Lemonade. "Let me tell you who she's talking about, can I tell you who she's talking about?" The 64-year-old asked before saying, "She's talking about you. You put that in context for you personally. She's talking about you and everybody that is you, that's who she's talking about." He went on to talk about how Lemonade "relates to everyone," adding, "Every one of us have been disappointed before and have had to go through the grieving process of anger and,...

I don’t know about you but I was extremely disappointed with Chris Rock’s documentary Good Hair. I thought it was going to be a film about the beauty of natural hair and black women. Instead it was entirely about hair straighteners and weaves and how great they were and totally ignored sisters with natural hair. No wait that’s not correct. I do recall one standing in the background in one scene. That was a wasted opportunity to say the least. But there have been other films that do deal with the on-going debate and controversy regarding black women and their hair and now there’s a new short film in the works which aims to join the discussion. Everybody has their top ten trailer and poster round-ups, their year-end articles that rate Hollywood’s offerings in neat, succinct – completely biased – lists. But what happens to those throwaway moments that defy categorization?
Maybe Quicksilver’s “Time in a Bottle” sequence from X-Men: Days of Future Past should be getting more attention this year, but not too many people have a best musical moments list (but we do, and it’s good). MaybeGuardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Racoon doesn’t quite make the top ten characters of the year, but surely the foul-mouthed animal deserves some recognition!
And then there’s the ridiculous stuff; The “I just want to talk about why Peeta likes bread so much” kind of stuff.
Our Best of the Rest list aims to find those thrown away gems and shine light on their greatness (or lack thereof).

Prior to Chris Rock’s new film Top Five, my favorite of his scattered (sometimes sadly corny and embarrassing) big screen efforts has been the writer-director’s illuminating documentary Good Hair where he played himself: genial, witty, and inquisitive. Most of his movies underestimate Rock’s range of influences: his stage persona the dominant perception in everyone’s mind. But unless you’re Rodney Dangerfield, seldom does a stage act translate well in features. The wacky inspirations of Louis Ck and Rock’s Pootie Tang were tamed by studio fools; CB4 is just a series of bits. When he does settle his rhythms for a good indie role (2 Days in New York, Nurse Betty), Rock is affable but lacks the confidence shown in concert or a club. Finally perfecting the formula, Top Five is Rock’s triple-hat artist’s statement on fame, culture, relationships, New York City, stand-up, hip hop,...

There’s no question that Chris Rock is really f*cking funny. If you’ve witnessed his standup in person, you know it can be paralytically funny (I experienced it once and almost developed a hernia). But the comedian is also an accomplished writer/director who has made three feature-length films now, on top of conceiving his own TV show and the social documentary “Good Hair.” His latest film is “Top Five,” a celebrity-skewering comedy that makes its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend. Written and directed by Rock, the art-imitating-life comedy sees the actor playing a comedian turned serious film star. Rosario Dawson co-stars as the New York Times journalist shadowing him for a profile. During what becomes a long sparring match between the two of them, the writer forces the comedian to confront the career that has made him famous and the life he left behind.

So Henry is absolutely batshit crazy, and I love it. Let me give you some perspective: Humping a woman out of a window was something a sane person would do compared to the things he’s pulling now. Declaring a servant his new queen? Threatening his own sons? And, most importantly, wielding a sword while attending a wedding completely barefoot? Yep, he’s done them all. At this point, I think Henry’s a bigger monster than The Darkness, but he’s also a much more attractive one, and quite frankly, watching him lose his marbles is nothing if not incredibly entertaining.
