There’s a lot riding on “Luck,” the debut feature from Skydance Animation and Apple Original Films. The fantasy comedy’s August 5 premiere on Apple TV+ not only signals a new animation player, but also the first new feature produced by John Lasseter after his departure from Pixar and Disney amid allegations of improper workplace conduct.
A sweet film about the unluckiest girl in the world, Sam (Eva Noblezada), and her journey into the magical Land of Luck, “Luck” was already in the works at Skydance prior to Lasseter coming aboard as the head of Skydance Animation. At the time, DreamWorks vets Alessandro Carloni (“Kung Fu Panda 3”) and Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise) were attached as director and screenwriters. However, when Lasseter joined Skydance, he wanted a change in direction, turning to two women he had worked with at Disney and Pixar. Peggy Holmes...

Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation have unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new animated film “Luck” on, fittingly enough, Friday the 13th.
This is our first look at a new animated work from producer John Lasseter since the storied Pixar veteran left his post at the Disney-owned studio and set up shop at Skydance Animation, where he currently serves as Head of Animation.
Directed by Peggy Holmes (“Secret of the Wings”) and written by Kiel Murray (“Cars 3”), “Luck” tells the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world, who when she stumbles into the never-before-seen Land of Luck, sets out on a quest to bring some good luck home for her best friend. But with humans not allowed, her only chance is teaming up with the magical creatures who live there to do it.

“Blush,” the debut short from Skydance Animation and Apple Original Films, is a semi-autobiographical work about love, loss, and healing from former Disney story artist Joe Mateo (who was behind the Emmy-winning “Prep & Landing”). A horticulturist-astronaut crash lands on a desolate dwarf planet and struggles to survive, only to be saved with the arrival of a bright, outgoing creature, who makes the planet bloom with succulent plants. All goes beautifully until tragedy strikes.
“I lost my wife, Mary Ann, four and a half years ago from breast cancer, and I struggled to go back to work,” Mateo said. “But that same night when I lost her, I couldn’t breathe. I had to call a doctor friend of ours about this panic attack, which I’d never experienced before. And I’m fortunate that I had my kids around me.”
That panic attack and his inability to breathe got Mateo...

Whoopi Goldberg has joined the voice cast of “Luck,” Apple announced Thursday in a press release.
Goldberg will voice “The Captain,” the head of security for the Land of Good Luck, in the animated feature film. She joins previously announced cast member Jane Fonda in the collaboration between Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation.
Peggy Holmes (“Secret of the Wings”) is directing the film written by Kiel Murray (“Cars”). “Luck” follows a particularly unlucky heroine as she discovers the World of Good and Bad Luck, partnering up with mystical creatures along the way.
John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and David Eisenmann are producing for Skydance Animation.
Goldberg recently appeared in the adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novel “The Stand,” streaming as a limited event series on CBS All Access, and will next be seen in a recurring role in Amazon’s comedy series “Harlem.” Goldberg is one of only 16 Egot winners,...

Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda has joined the voice cast of “Luck,” a new feature from the just-announced content partnership between Apple and Skydance Animation.
Fonda, who has a long relationship with Skydance Media as the producer of her Netflix series “Grace and Frankie,” is on board for a key role in the film that envisions colliding worlds of good and bad luck — and the unlucky girl who must intervene and save the day.
Fonda will voice The Dragon, described as the “exuberant CEO of Good Luck and undisputed luckiest ancient being in all the land. The Dragon is elegant, stylish and as persuasive as she is powerful. The only thing better than good luck is more good luck, so when bad luck starts to spin out of control, she must face her fears or risk losing good luck forever.”

The John Lasseter-led Skydance Animation feature slate is coming together more than a year after he left Disney/Pixar amid workplace sexual harassment allegations, with director Vicky Jenson (“Shrek”) helming a musical fantasy titled “Spellbound” (working title), about a young girl breaking the spell that has split her kingdom in two. Disney musical legend Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast”) has just been signed to compose the score and original songs, with a script by Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin (“Mulan”) and Linda Woolverton (“Beauty and the Beast”). Joining Menken is celebrated lyricist and frequent collaborator Glenn Slater (“Tangled”) and lauded music producer Chris Montan (former head of Walt Disney Music).
“Alan Menken’s music defines a generation and is loved by audiences around the world,” said Jenson. “From day one, we knew this magical world would be full of music, and we knew only Alan could bring it to life.

Hello! It’s been a while since we found out that Disney+ UK’s launch would be running around five months behind its debut in the Us and we’ve certainly had a grumble about it, as we’re fond of doing here on days with ‘y’s’ in them, but the streaming service is finally coming to this green and, er, pleasant land later this month.
Looking ahead to what we can expect to find on the platform, we’ve grabbed an official list of movies, TV series and specials streaming on Disney+ UK at launch, and hopefully you’ll find something that excites you on it. If not? Ehh, there are always those other ten bajillion streaming providers to choose from.
Indeed, you’ll notice a lot of these titles were previously staples of the defunct Disney+ Life app, which is being fully replaced by Disney+, and there...

Planes: Fire & Rescue, much like the Cars sequel, spins us into an entirely new world, and though the Cars franchise sequels haven’t been quite the blockbusters Pixar might have hoped for, this broader sequel theory has made them both far better films than simpler “add-on” efforts might have managed.
Dusty finds himself out of the racing game, and quickly joins with a crew of rescue vehicles who keep an eye on a vast forest in order to contain fires. Naturally, this isn’t something that sounds like a great time to Dusty at first, but he learns that there’s a lot more to life than being in the spotlight.
This all kicks off because Dusty continually pushes himself too far, damaging a part that can’t be replaced. In a fairly obvious maneuver, he ends up crashing, and causing a fire. This leads to the airport being shut down,...

Dusty and the gang are the focus of the posters – designed by Art Director Toby Wilson early in the production of the movie. The Americana-style concepts for the look of Piston Peak National Park were inspired by vintage 1930s Wpa-era prints.

A wayward fairy joins forces with pirates in this underwhelming children's tale
Once again, perfunctory 3D is employed to create the illusion that a straight to DVD title has a reason to be in the cinema. Following on from the equally disappointing Secret of the Wings, this finds errant sprite Zarina (Christina Hendricks) wreaking accidental havoc with colourfully alchemical fairy dust before teaming up with the pre-Peter Pan pirates of Skull Rock. Tom Hiddleston has silver-tongued fun as a young Captain Hook, but the results are as unmemorable as they are innocuous.

After spinning off the Cars franchise to great success last year, DisneyToon Studios are returning to cinemas this summer with Planes: Fire and Rescue.
The original Planes was of course initially expected to be a straight-to-dvd feature, as is typical with DisneyToon Studios’ output, but a late decision from Disney switched gears to give the film a theatrical release, and going one step further to announce Planes: Fire and Rescue before the film had even hit cinemas.
With its July release date on the horizon, the first full-length trailer has now debuted over on Yahoo Movies.

What Richard Did; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; Mission to Lars; TinkerBell and the Secret of the Wings
The Irish director Lenny Abrahamson really is a remarkable film-maker. His debut feature, Adam & Paul, updated the existential black comedy of Beckett's Waiting for Godot, with two addicts scraping their way through the underbelly of Dublin to grimly comic effect. Garage built upon the acting promise of its predecessor as Abrahamson drew exceptional performances from an ensemble cast including Pat Shortt and Anne-Marie Duff. Both films are eclipsed, however, by What Richard Did (2012, Artificial Eye, 15), a tale of youth, privilege, denial and tragedy that confirms Abrahamson as both a major cinematic talent and a distinctive directorial voice.
Adapted by screenwriter Malcolm Campbell from Kevin Power's book Bad Day in Blackrock (which drew inspiration from real-life events still fresh in the minds of many), this deceptively low-key drama centres on Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor), a handsome,...

Sky is to launch a brand new, dedicated satellite television channel that will become the pay-tv home of Disney Studios movies in the UK and Ireland.
Sky Movies Disney will go live on the Sky platform in late March. It is part of a wide-ranging partnership deal between Sky and Disney, that follows similar collaboration agreements between the part-Rupert Murdoch media giant and Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures and Sony.
Sky Movies Disney marks the first time that The Walt Disney Channel has been involved in a co-branded linear movies channel anywhere in the world.
The channel's launch is also the latest initiative in Sky's strategy of dedicating entire channels to a certain genre or brand, following the debut of Formula One network Sky Sports F1, and Bond films channel Sky Movies 007 last year.
New Disney movies will be available on Sky Movies Disney around six months after they have ended their cinema run,...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

No dry January for the UK box office as The Hobbit clings to its perch and The Impossible and Life of Pi perform admirably
The battle for the top spot
After an incredibly strong fourth quarter of 2012, UK cinemas have got off to a flying start in 2013, powered this week by some exceptional results. The Impossible battled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for first place, with the Tolkien adaptation edging out the disaster weepie with £4.08m to £4.03m.
In truth, The Hobbit is the clear winner, as The Impossible's number is inflated by three days of previews totaling £1.56m. Still, local distributor eOne will be delighted with its result on The Impossible, the true story of one Spanish family's survival of the 2004 Asian tsunami – played in the film version by an English-speaking cast led by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Juan Antonio Bayona's film has already proved a...

Here's a little news story that we missed from just before Christmas that is a little bit surprising, if not particularly exciting. Remember that terrible-sounding Cars spin-off that Disney had in development called... ahem... Planes? Well, it turns out that this movie is no longer just a direct-to-dvd cash grab by the Mouse House. Apparently someone out there decided that the final product might actually be good enough to warrant a full theatrical release. In other words, this summer we'll be getting not one but two Pixar films heading to theatres. Well, except for the fact that Pixar wasn't actually involved in Planes. According to Box Office Mojo, Planes has been scheduled for release on August 9th, 2013, just two months after Monsters University hits theatres. The movie is not being developed by Pixar, but rather DisneyToon Studios, the same folks who gave us TinkerBell and Secret of the Wings. John Lasseter...
