'Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone' But A Lot Of People Eat It In All Kinds Of Ways!
ccthemovieman-131 May 2008
Bread: the basic source of food for half the world! Bread: a food discussed often in the Bible and used by Jesus as a metaphor in some of his most profound statements. It's a food that has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians were the first to discover how to make it rise, and then the ancient Greeks developed 70 kinds of bread.

That leads to the question this program asks early on: how is it that something so simple as flour mixed with just water can produce so many tastes and shapes? Every culture has its special bread and many of them are examined in this episode of Modern Marvels.

The average American eats 53 pounds of bread each year, and the best selling bread over the years has been Wonder Bread. Modern Marvels shows us how it's made, explains to us the basics of wheat and yeast, and then we take a trip out west to San Francisco to examine Sourdough Bread.

From Sourdough, we learn about cornbread, altar wafers (communion for Catholics), tortillas, pita bread, bagels to today's latest fashion: artisan bread.

Not even halfway through this program, you want to hit the "pause" button and rush out to get a fresh loaf of one of these breads! They all look pretty darned good, and the people making them look very happy.
