Silverback Films made a splash last year with Emmy-winning natural history hit “Our Planet,” which quickly became Netflix’s most-watched docuseries soon after launching.
Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the ground-breaking series mixed jaw-dropping scenes of nature with an urgent reminder to viewers that everything they are witnessing on screen is imperilled by human activity.
This month, Silverback returns with feature documentary “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.”
Billed as Attenborough’s witness statement to the world, it documents the famed 94-year-old naturalist’s life in filmmaking, the destructive impact of humans on the natural world — and his vision for change to save the planet.
Backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the film has a theatrical release around the world from Sept. 28, and will then launch globally on Netflix this autumn, and is also accompanied by a book.

Over the last dozen years, Disneynature, Disney’s nature documentary wing, has churned out a wide variety of films that cover all manner of the animal kingdom and its attendant environs. Some have been huge hits, like wide-ranging smashes “Earth” and “Oceans” or the beloved animal-centric offerings “Chimpanzee” and “African Cats,” while others have fizzled (remember “Ghost of the Mountains”? maybe “Penguins”?). Along the way, the dozen-strong film lineup has shored up a predictable formula that combines on-the-ground insight with a cutesy, anthropomorphized look at some of the wild’s most majestic creatures.
And when it works, it really works. Mark Linfield’s “Elephant,” the first of two new Disneynature docs pushed directly to Disney’s fledgling streaming service Disney+, is one that works. Linfield, who previously co-directed sterling Disneynature offerings “Earth” and “Chimpanzee” alongside Alastair Fothergill, is now armed with a new partner: co-director Vanessa Berlowitz, a long-time producer...

It’s about wild animals. It’s narrated by Meghan Markle. And it’s one of the first Disneynature films to be released as a Disney+ exclusive. That ought to be enough give “Elephant” a shot of pop-culture currency rare for a nature documentary, and attract some curious viewers who’d otherwise be interested in “Tiger King” or “The Mandalorian.”
Make no mistake, though: “Elephant,” premiering on April 3 on Disney+ alongside another Disneynature doc, “Dolphin Reef,” does not have the train-wreck appeal of “Tiger King.” It’s got some big cats who briefly threaten our plucky pachyderms, but no crazy people around them. And Markle, who is listed in the credits as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” and who came on board in return for a hefty Disney donation to the Elephants Without Borders charity she supports, is a nondescript narrator who mostly stays out of the way; if you didn’t know it was her,...

Respected former Disney France chief Jean-Francois Camilleri has been named President of Paris-based Echo Studio, an international production firm dedicated to creating content with social impact. The move comes about three months after Camilleri announced his departure from Disney where he had spent 30 years in various roles both in France and Los Angeles.
In his new post, Camilleri will develop Echo Studio’s activities including content production, distribution, social impact campaigns, digital and experiences.
At Echo, he reteams with Yves Darandeau and Emmanuel Priou of Bonne Pioche who are also partners in the company. A new Disneynature documentary from directors Alastair Fothergill and Jeff Wilson — they also collaborated on the studio’s bless-the-beasts-and children docs Monkey Kingdom and Chimpanzee — Penguins puts the focus on Steve, an Adélie penguin coming of age during a freezing Antarctic spring. Yup, there is a cute overload; penguins are as adorable as hell. Steve’s 100-mile journey from his natural ocean habitat to the breeding grounds on shore does not skimp on trials and travails, which include nest building and making a life for himself. It’s no easy ride.

‘Penguins’ Review: Disney’s Captivating Documentary Franchise Follows a Plucky Bird Looking for Love
Before Disney wraps up the third phase of its blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe later this summer, the studio has yet another long-running series to keep building out. Sandwiched alongside all those superhero movies, that “Star Wars” franchise, a growing list of live-action remakes, and a continued interest in their Disney Princess films, Disneynature has quietly churned out over a dozen nature documentaries since its inception over a decade ago.
In a crowded House of Mouse, they remain some of the best bets the studio has to offer, uniting entrainment and education in an appealing package. With “Penguins,” frequent Disneynature filmmaker Alastair Fothergill and franchise newbie Jeff Wilson are working in a more minor key than such essential entries as “Chimpanzee” and “African Cats,” but the artistry and relative magic of the series is still on full display.

Long-serving Disney executive Jean-François Camilleri has announced his departure from the company. In social media posts Tuesday morning, Camilleri, whose most recent title was Country Manager, The Walt Disney Company, France, Benelux & French-Speaking Africa, said, “After 30 extraordinary years, I have decided to leave Disney. It’s a family that I love and that I will never forget… The journey was in every way exceptional.”
This is a big move in French industry circles, and comes just a week after Disney officially acquired Fox, although it is unclear if Camilleri’s departure was impacted by the merger. A Disney France spokesperson said there was no further information; we have reached out to Camilleri for comment. In his social media postings today, he noted, “It is time for me to invest myself fully in order to contribute to a meaningful future.”

Successful documentaries stand out any year because with the possible exception of highly-produced non-fiction fare about political advocacy, cute animals or legendary rock stars, they are often viewed as particularly big gambles, even for veteran distributors hardened by the shifting whims of the box office.
Of course, riling up a base of animal lovers, music fans or political partisans are not dollar-making guarantees either, but tapping a crowd just right can hit a theatrical zeitgeist, as in the case of Magnolia Pictures/Participant Sundance doc, Rbg — produced by CNN Films. Directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, the doc ushered in what has been a somewhat common refrain among watchers of the box office as the “Summer of Docs”, a triumvirate which includes b.o. champ Won’t You Be My Neighbor? from Focus Features and Neon’s Three Identical Strangers. The three had their premieres at the Sundance Film Festival last January.

Documentaries are rarely big money makers, but we talk about them as having the power to influence change and motivate people to action in a way even narrative films cannot. So when a documentary does make a splash at the box office, it’s an even bigger surprise. This summer, “Rbg,” “Three Identical Strangers” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” are big hits when it comes to documentaries. And the Mister Rogers doc is well on its way to cracking this list of the top 15 grossing documentaries at the box office. This list is an interesting mix of political, nature and concert documentaries, and several of them likewise went on to win Oscars and critical acclaim. All numbers are domestic totals via Box Office Mojo.

KollywoodThe film's main character is a Chimpanzee named Kong. Digital NativeDigital NativeThe first look poster of Jiiva’s upcoming film titled Gorilla was released by its makers on Thursday. Helming the affairs of the film is director Don Sandy who had directed the crime thriller Mahabalipuram earlier. The film's main character is a Chimpanzee. The Chimpanzee which is named Kong, is from the world renowned Samut training station of Thailand, which boasts of training animals for Hollywood films like Hangover 2, Planets of the Apes hence the shooting of a major chunk of Gorilla is taking place there, a source reveals. In an interview the film's director told Toi, "We have had scenes in Tamil cinema that show bank robberies. But no Tamil film has explored the idea in totality, in a full-length film. This movie will be like those bank robbery movies in Hollywood. It will be an out-and-out comedy where the lead cast heads off to loot a bank. They all have a short flashback as to why they are doing it, too. It will be an interesting subject for Tamil audiences.” Shalini Pandey of Arjun Reddy fame has been roped in to play the female lead and the film also has a bevy of stars in the cast including Radha Ravi, Sathish, Muniskanth, Yogi Babu and Mottai Rajendran. It may be mentioned here that Rj Balaji was initially roped in to play a pivotal role in this entertainer but later he was replaced with Sathish. The film is bankrolled by Vijayaraghavendra under his banner All In Pictures, who bankrolled movies such as Masala Padam and Rum. The music for this comedy entertainer will be composed by Sam Cs of Vikram Vedha fame. Vetri Mahendran will crank the camera and Ruben is in charge of the cuts. Jiiva will be teaming up with Joker fame Rajumurugan for his next titled Gypsy. The pre-production work has begun and soon the team will start shooting for the movie. Unlike Raju Murugan's earlier movies, Cuckoo and Joker, sources say Gypsy will be a commercial entertainer with a subtle social message. It will be a travel based film which will be shot across the country. (Content provided by Digital Native)...

The latest Earth Day release from Disneynature, Monkey Kingdom, is the charming story of Maya, a toque macaque living in the rainforest of Sri Lanka, whose world is changed when her son Kip is born. Anxious for her son to have all the best that life in their troop has to offer, Maya tries, not always successfully, to climb the social ladder and advance up the pecking order of the troop. At the top sits alpha male Raja, and his harem of top females and offspring that get the best beds, the best food and the best treatment.
After an attack on their home, Castle Rock, by a neighboring troop of monkeys, Raja is injured and the troop must now rely on Maya and her mate Kumar’s jungle smarts and street savvy to survive. One particularly hilarious sequence shows the local town and markets overrun with monkeys, stealing every...

In 1948 Walt Disney invented the nature movie with his collection of feature films and short programs he dubbed "True Life Adventures." These programs were revolutionary and essential, educational and entertaining. In short: nobody had ever seen anything like them. (It goes without saying that this breakthrough is, in the laundry list of Disney's cultural and technological accomplishments, frequently overlooked.)
Sixty years after the first "True Life Adventure" was unleashed on an unsuspecting world, Disney created Disneynature, a shingle used to produce new nature films for modern audiences. And these films are great. From the oddly emotional family drama of "African Cats" to this year's joyful "Bears," the new Disney nature films usually spotlight an individual animal species, gorgeously photographed and evocatively narrated. The latest Disneynature production is "Monkey Kingdom," out this spring, and we've got the exclusive new trailer.

During its fledgling years as a film studio, the Walt Disney Company helped revolutionize the nature documentary with its True-Life Adventure series. Here, as never before, audiences could thrill to the story of seals, beavers, bears, tigers, and the rest of the creatures sharing space with us on Earth. These days, what is most striking about these early documentaries is less the physical ground they cover, and more that they come from a patient time in filmmaking. Documentaries like The Living Desert and Seal Island featured narration and music, and sometimes attempted to play up the humor of an animalistic situation, but they were still created by people who afforded their presumed audience a base level of intelligence. In some respects, these nature documentaries were born out of the insistence on...

Who else is excited about Bears, the latest Disneynature documentary, which arrives in theaters next Friday? After taking last year off, the Mouse House is back for another Earth Day release, and sure it’ll feature a lot of anthropomorphizing narration but at least that narration is being spoken by John C. Reilly. And with it also comes the first trailer for next year’s feature (yay, they’re back on an annual track), which is titled Monkey Kingdom. Disney has already gone ahead and debuted the spot a week early, though, and while it doesn’t have any celebrity voiceover (I don’t think this one’s has been revealed yet), it is entirely soundtracked with the singing voice of Lorde. Of course it is. After all, she has a song called “Royals,” perfect for a movie with the word “kingdom” in the title, though the tune in this trailer is “Team,” which...

With the release of the documentary Bears just under a couple weeks away, Disneynature is already beginning to show off their Earth Day documentary release coming in 2015. This time the niche release arm of the House of Mouse is focusing on a group of monkeys in the jungles of South Asia in Monkey Kingdom. The film spotlights the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia, alongside a rich cast of forest characters. More specifically, we follow a mother and her newborn as they struggle to survive. Watch! Here's the teaser trailer for Disneynature's Monkey Kingdom, originally from Yahoo: Monkey Kingdom is directed by Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergill (both of Chimpanzee and Earth) and spotlights the gripping reality of a newborn monkey and its mother, struggling to survive within the competitive...

In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure Bears showcases a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life’s most important lessons. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold.
The world outside is exciting – but risky – as the cubs’ playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches. As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bears must work hard to find food – ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run – while staying safe from rival male bears and predators, including an ever-present wolf.

If you loved Disneynature's heartwarming (and heartbreaking) "Chimpanzee," prepare for another journey into the wilderness with their upcoming film "Bears."
Directed by Keith Scholey ("African Cats") and Alastair Fothergill ("Chimpanzee"), "Bears" follows Sky and her two young cubs as they work to find food, stay safe from predators, and attempt to survive winter.
A new trailer features breathtaking scenery -- stunning mountain vistas and sparkling rivers in the Alaskan wilderness. As with other Disneynature movies, the intimacy of the footage is extraordinary; it almost feels as if you're Sky's third cub.
"Bears" opens April 18, 2014. A portion of opening week proceeds goes to the National Park Foundation.

★★★☆☆ In the ever-watchable Chimpanzee (2012), Blue Planet producers Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield transport us to the Ivorian rainforests of Taï National Park, where we are introduced to three-month-old Oscar - a cheeky ape who gains an unexpected ally when he's faced with more than his fair share of troubles from a rival group of chimps. As is to be expected from a Disney Nature-backed documentary, the tone is light throughout as we witness the daily trials and tribulations of life below the canopy. The level is set (and kept) at 'pleasingly chirpy', with a heavy injection of anthropomorphism given to the travailing troop.
American actor Tim Allen's merry, if at times rather corny narration keeps this rather short, feature-length tale chortling along, referring to the oldest chimpanzee as 'Grandpa' and crowbarring in jokes seemingly swiped from his 1990s TV show Home Improvement. At times, this approach results in...

"If a lion could speak, we could not understand him," said Ludwig Wittgenstein, and he certainly could not tell us his name. Wittgenstein, that great lover of movies, was not talking about Disney Studios' True-Life Adventures though he might well have been, as he lived long enough to have seen that anthropomorphic series of natural history documentaries which began in 1948 (three years before his death) and continued until 1960. It was revived in 2008 as Disneynature, with headquarters in Paris, and is still patronising its young audiences with the storylines and names it imposes upon the excellent wildlife material its intrepid photographers bring home.
A couple of years ago we had remarkable footage about lions in African Cats, shot all over the place and turned into a turf war between two prides in Kenya, one headed by Kali, the other by Fang, and narrated by Patrick Stewart. Chimpanzee cuts together film shot...

I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.

Cuteness proximity alert! Cuteness proximity alert! As with African Cats, the previous film in Disneynature’s animal documentary series, Chimpanzee gets us way closer to creatures in the wild and lets us see them like we never have before, and as we never could in a zoo or some other environment to which they’re not native. This is an extraordinarily cozy and confident film that relaxes into life in the jungle in a way that feels much more comfortable than Cats does, perhaps because we can identify so closely with the tribe of chimps filmmakers Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield followed for months: their attention to and care for one another, friendships and squabbles alike, are heartrendingly familiar... and their clever use of tools and strategy, whether they’re hunting food or fending off an attack by a rival tribe, are potent reminders of how closely indeed we are related to these magnificent animals.

When director/producer Mark Linfield talks about the process of making Disneynature’s Chimpanzee he speaks of filmmaking by evolution. He would like the film’s audience to understand that, counter-intuitively, for animals to behave naturally before the eyes of the world they must first be used to having the eyes of men trained upon them. The idea of safari-suited filmmakers trekking deep into the rainforest and simply ‘discovering’ their quarry is a romantic fallacy. The worldwide search for a group of chimps – who would not only tolerate cameras but go about their day in spite of them – led Linfield and co-director Alastair Fothergill to the heart of The Tai Forest. Access to this vast Unesco World Heritage Site, in The Republique de Cote-d’Ivoire, required fourteen hours of grueling travel from the nearest city. But the reward for their trek was the painstaking work world renowned chimpanzee expert Christophe...

The phrase alpha male conjures pictures of manly men and beastly beasts doing masculine things in a masculine way. One does not expect an alpha male to nurture, to take care, or to love. Disneynature’s stunning new feature Chimpanzee tells the story of the exception to that rule. The exhilarating family adventure transports its audience to Africa’s Ivory Coast, where cheeky young chimp Oscar is just gaining the confidence to explore his colourful rainforest home. Disney favourite Tim Allen narrates the tale with enthusiasm and panache – easily sweeping youngsters into the captivating story and gripping their attention throughout.
Chimpanzee’s director/producers, Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield were already highly accomplished wildlife documentarians. Both had enjoyed box office success with their previous Disneynature feature, Earth, and the team they assembled for Chimpanzee have equally distinguished records in the field. Still, the demands placed on the talented crew must have been tremendous.

The simian star of new Disney film Chimpanzee is the latest animal to be portrayed as having human emotions. But does such anthropomorphism give a distorted view of nature?
You could say cinema and nature got off on the wrong foot, or paw, right from the start. In 1926, to much excitement, an adventurer named William Douglas Burden brought back two komodo dragons to New York's Bronx zoo – the first live specimens the western world had ever seen. Most of that excitement had been generated via a movie Burden had made depicting these semi-mythical reptiles in the Indonesian wild, voraciously devouring a wild boar. By comparison, the real, live komodo dragons were something of a disappointment. They just lay about lethargically in their cage, and died a few months later. It later transpired that Burden's film had been heavily edited and staged to amp up the drama. The dragons hadn't actually...

When his mother died, he was adopted by tough Freddy, to the astonishment of watching scientists
The death of a mother chimpanzee usually proves fatal for her babies. Rarely do other female chimps step in to adopt orphans, and adult males are too busy trying to establish their supremacy within the group.
So when "Oscar", the tiny star of a major new film about chimpanzees, was orphaned two years into a three-year shoot in an African rainforest, dismayed film-makers feared that he faced certain death. Then in stepped "Freddy", the group's dominant male, with a display of tenderness never before captured on camera, astonishing the leading scientists and the largely British film crew making a Disney film to be released in the UK on 3 May.

The news from Walt Disney has been a mixed bag this week. We saw them shutter LucasArts and today the next wave of reductions and layoffs are coming in the name of efficiency. If Chairman Bob Iger is right, and this repositions the company for the world of tomorrow, then it was a wise move, better done now to remain competitive. Creatively, this week we were given three other pieces of news. First, there was the announcement of the anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo, Finding Dory¸ which will arrive in 2015. Here’s the official announcement: Burbank, Calif. (April 2, 2013) – When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar-winning film Finding Nemo, she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov.

Disneynature brings us a family-friendly version of Werner Herzog‘s harrowing Grizzly Man and we’ve got the first trailer today. It is the seventh film from the Disneynature label, following Chimpanzee, Earth, The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos, Oceans, African Cats and Pollen, and this one is lined up to make its debut on Earth Day of 2014, which is exactly Tuesday April 22nd. Meanwhile, Yahoo has the actual release date set for April 18th, 2014, which would make more sense, being a Friday and all. Joining the ranks of DisneyNature’s Earth, Oceans, African Cats, and Chimpanzee, the studio has now unveiled a first look at their latest entry - Bears. The latest of their Earth Day offerings, Bears centers on a family of, well, bears, with the film focusing on a family of Alaskan grizzly bears. Here’s a sneak peek of Disneynature’s Bears, in theaters Earth Day 2014. In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature’s new movie showcases a year in the life of two mother bears as they impart life lessons to their impressionable young cubs. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting—but risky—as the cubs’ playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches.
As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bear families must work together to find food—ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run—while staying safe from predators, including an ever-present wolf pack. Bears captures the fast-moving action and suspense of life in one of the planet’s last great wildernesses—where...

Have a first look at Bears in this featurette, which joins Disneynature's previous documentaries Earth, Oceans, African Cats and Chimpanzee. For every ticket purchased to see one of these films, a portion goes to helping parts of our world, from 3 million trees being planted in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, 40,000 acres of Coral Reef protected in the Bahamas, to 65,000 acres of Savanna protected in Kenya and 130,000 acres of Chimpanzee Habitat protected in Africa. Bears finds theaters on Earth Day, 2014 and this new trailer features input from director Alastair Fothergill. The film transports viewers to the untamed shores of the Alaskan wild, following a year in the life of two mothers, teaching their impressionable young cubs life lessons.
