In the first moments of the sci-fi horror series Parasyte: The Grey, a spore from who knows where falls from the sky. It bounces gently onto the ground as it lands, looking like a squishy toy you’d get from a gumball machine. Then a tentacle sprouts out, slithers toward the nearest person, jumps right into their brain — and creates a tentacled creature that endangers everyone in sight.
The series from director Yeon Sang-ho follows the aftermath when one too many extraterrestrial larvae flop onto Earth in an attempt to take over humankind. As a powerful team called the Grey work to eradicate the threat by any means necessary, one woman must coexist with the parasite that lives inside her. Based on the Japanese manga Parasyte, the Korean series stars Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun.

We have seen time and time again how Netflix can be a place where movies and shows get rediscovered. It is also a place where shows and movies can become extremely popular through word of mouth — mostly because Netflix's own marketing efforts aren't enough to rival traditional Hollywood studios. This is how something like "Stranger Things" became a phenomenon, and how "Suits" got a new chance at life. Video stores might be dead, but that hasn't stopped audiences from discovering things they might have otherwise missed.
Such is the case with a new Korean thriller series making waves and climbing up the Netflix charts. "Parasyte: The Grey" is the new show from Yeon Sang-ho, director of "Train to Busan" and "Hellbound." It adapts Hitoshi Iwaaki's best-selling manga, which is about a high schooler facing an alien invasion after a parasite tries to take over his brain but instead manages only to infect his arm.

While "Dune: Part Two" continues to dominate the box office, Netflix is bringing a whole lot of new titles to the platform -- and we're doing our best to make sure that not all of them get lost in the algorithm.
This April, Netflix is bringing some highly anticipated titles, including what was once meant to be a spin-off of "Doom Patrol" (the best superhero show that isn't a superhero show), a brand new anime from the studio behind "Ranking of Kings," and not one but two live-action adaptations of beloved manga — including one created by the director of "Train to Busan."
Because of the almighty algorithm, it can be hard to filter through the many titles getting released on streaming every week, let alone know they even exist. That's what this guide is for, as we go through our top picks for what we're hoping are some of the...

Netflix is doing pretty well when it comes to South Korean content, as it is dominating the market in the US. With massive hits like Squid Games, All of Us Are Dead, and Hellbound the streaming service has added another surefire hit to the list. Based on the Naver Webtoon titled SalinjaㅇNangam (A Killer Paradox) by Kkomabi, A Killer Paradox revolves around a submissive college student who accidentally kills a serial killer with a hammer. Soon, he learns that he has a superpower that senses evil in people and he starts getting rid of said people while being chased by a relentless detective.

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.

From Squid Game 2 To Extraordinary Attorney Woo 2, Netflix Renews 7 K-Dramas For 2024!(Photo Credit –IMDb)
It’s the Soju’o clock for K-drama lovers as Netflix remains committed to contributing to the ongoing Hallyuwave. The streaming giant has renewed as many as seven dramas, promising to bring some of its wildly popular hits back. In 2023, viewers saw a redemption arc in Korean dramas after a relatively mundane last year, and 2024 is already off to a promising start.
From The Glory 2 to Sweet Home 2 and Taxi Driver 2 to Strong Girl Nam-soon, 2023 was a year of remakes. With 2024 shaping up as a strong year for K-dramas as Netflix promises to keep the entertainment rolling, it’s interesting that the streaming giant has introduced a franchise culture for K-dramas, a rare phenomenon in the Hallyuwood. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to proclaim that South Korea consistently delivers some of the most riveting thriller entertainment. Long before the (K)wave of interest in soppy K-dramas and overproduced K-pop, it was thriller Korean cinema that was gripping audiences all around the world, exemplified by masterpieces like Oldboy and I Saw The Devil. This is probably why said genre keeps delivering hard-hitting shows every month. This year alone, we’ve had a dozen in this category, with Sweet Home 2 being the latest in the mix. So, when I heard of Death’s Game, I was certainly excited to see what the industry was going to cook up for us. The South Korean industry, known for its prowess in adapting webtoons and consistently delivering compelling content, had something promising in store. Oftentimes, though, the buzz surrounding a show intensifies when it hails from said industry. When we got to...

Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning Korean film Parasite, will be removed from the new drama No Way Out, a black comedy surrounding the contract killing of a man who was just released from prison after serving 13 years. Lee was expected to play the role of a detective in the film, which started shooting last week.
On Monday, however, producer Studio X+U released a statement, saying it was reviewing various options to replace Lee after news broke that he was being investigated by the police over suspected drug use.
“Following an unfortunate incident last week with the actor Lee Sun-gyun, he expressed that it would take a considerable amount of time to sort out the current situation and that he will inevitably drop out” from shooting the project, the statement read. “The company reached an agreement with Lee’s agency and respects the actor’s position.

When Netflix announced in April that it’s planning to spend $2.5 billion on Korean content across the next four years, on top of the more than $1 billion already spent since 2016, it made the world sit up and take notice.
In many ways, spending heavily in Korea is a no-brainer. Netflix has already had a global breakout Korean hit with Squid Game, followed by a slew of shows that may not have reached the same dizzy heights but are still international hits such as period zombie drama Kingdom, supernatural thriller Hellbound, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, about a female lawyer on the autism spectrum, revenge saga The Glory, and survival game show Physical: 100.
Of course, Netflix is not the only global streamer in the Korean content game, but it was arguably the first to spot its international potential. On a recent trip to Seoul, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said that 60% of its...

Geralyn Marie Betzler worked on several movies throughout the ’80s and ’90s. On her first feature, 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, she was credited by her full birth name, but as her screen acting career went on she would take credit as either Geri Betzler or Zoe Trilling – and it’s that second name that most fans seem to know her by. Among her credits are episodes of Guiding Light, 21 Jump Street, and Married… with Children, and the films Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, They Came from Outer Space, The Borrower, Dr. Giggles, Night Terrors, Hellbound, and Leprechaun 3 – but her most popular role may be in the 1994 horror comedy Night of the Demons 2, where she stole the show as bad girl Shirley Finnerty. Sadly, just as Night of the Demons 2 is reaching Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory, it has been confirmed that Betzler / Trilling passed away...

Freshly announced this morning, Arrow Video is bringing the Hellraiser franchise to 4K Ultra HD with a brand new Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment Limited Edition 4K Uhd set.
The upcoming set features the following Hellraiser movies:
Hellraiser (1987) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
The most exciting aspect of this release? Arrow’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment set features the newly uncovered Workprint Version of fourth installment Hellraiser: Bloodline!
This never-before-seen version of the 1996 sequel, directed by Kevin Yagher, “provides a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production.” The initial cut of the movie ran 110 minutes long, but the studio executives at Miramax demanded major changes that resulted in Yagher departing the project. The final cut ultimately ended up running 85 minutes long, and Yagher was so unhappy with the finished product that he took his name off the movie. That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is...

South Korea is known globally for its web series, movies and K-pop, with content including Squid Game and Parasite and groups like BTS and Blackpink becoming household names internationally. But there is another Korean cultural export – webtoons and their associated IP – that is starting to have an impact, not just in Korea, but around the world.
Webtoons are comics that have been designed specifically for mobile phones. Unlike Western comics and Japanese manga, they’re composed of single panels arranged vertically so that they can be easily scrolled through with one hand while you’re using the other to hang off the strap of your local commuter train.
Originating on the platforms of two Korean tech giants, Daum (which was later absorbed into Kakao) and Naver, in the early 2000s, the format is already huge across Asia and has become an invaluable source of IP for the region’s booming streaming industry.

Toledo, Spain — In 2022, 32 U.S. titles ranked in a top 100 of most globally popular new scripted TV shows released in 2022.
30 South Korean series made the same Top 100, according to a study by London and L.A.-based consultancy Ampere Analysis presented Tuesday at Spain’s Conecta Fiction.
Ampere’s popularity score is a propriety metric based not on viewership but on the tracking of internet search volume received by a title each month as well as other measures, Ampere’s Alice Thorpe clarified at the presentation.
Nine of the Top 100 titles were Japanese. The fandom base of Korean series and Japanese anime are concentrated in teen and YA demographics, which are also most avid Internet users.
“Demographic skew can certainly be a factor, yes. The existence of fandom around these titles certainly helps. We account for not just search volume/trending topics, however, but also factor in page views on...

Netflix is doubling down on Korean content after achieving global impact with viral series like Squid Game, The Glory and Physical: 100.
The streamer said Monday, in a statement targeted to the local Korean press, that it will spend $2.5 billion in South Korea over the next four years to produce Korean TV series, movies and unscripted shows. The hefty investment would represent twice what Netflix has spent in Korea between its local launch in 2016 and today, according to the company.
The investment plans were first shared during a meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos in Washington,D.C., where Yoon arrived Monday for a state visit.
“We were able to make this decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said Sarandos. “I have no doubt our investment will strengthen our long-term partnership with Korea and Korea’s creative ecosystem,...

Is it time for South Korea’s TV drama series to move over and make way for Korean unscripted entertainment — namely game shows and reality shows?
While 2003 drama series “Jewel in the Palace,” or the more recent “Crash Landing on You,” “Memories of the Alhambra,” “Mr. Queen,” “Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)” and “Descendants of the Sun” have for years successfully tugged at emotional heartstrings across Asia, the unscripted category has equally long been a staple of Korean domestic TV.
Korean variety shows have been a catch-all with multi-generational appeal. Talent contests have worked well in the home market, but often were too quirky — too much dialogue, or distracting titles flashing across the screen — which meant that they were best exported as formats rather than finished shows.
Examples of those include Mbc’s 2015 hit “King of Mask Singer,” which became “The Masked Singer” for Fox in the U.S. (and...

Leading South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in, star of “Burning,” “The Throne” and Netflix series “Hellbound,” must report to the police on Friday in connection with the alleged use of a variety of drugs.
Allegations of Yoo’s drug use emerged a month ago and he has previously spoken with authorities. The Yonhap news agency now specifies that he will be considered as a criminal suspect when he presents himself to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Friday. It is unclear whether Yoo will be formally arrested at that time.
Yoo became a person of interest in early February after the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revealed that he had bought suspicious quantities of the sedative Propofol in a series of purchases starting in 2021. Propofol is a strong sedative that can also be used as an anesthetic. The authorities have looked into several doctors’ offices and clinics in Seoul that may have administered the drug.

This article contains spoilers for Physical: 100 through episode 8.
There are many elements that set Physical: 100 apart from other reality competition TV, but its ambition when it comes to the sheer number of contestants is one of the most striking details. If you didn’t catch it from the title, there are one hundred of them. There are firefighters and ice climbers, baseball pitchers and Olympic skeleton racers. And just when you think you’ve met all of the contestants, we flash back to the hall of torsos to discover another potential star.
From a viewer’s perspective, it can be a bit daunting. From a producer’s perspective, it is an ambitious challenge. On the one hand, how do you keep viewers engaged with so many introductions? (Imagine 100 people coming out of that limo in The Bachelor… we’d never get to the roses.) On the other hand,...
