The really good news this weekend — two new openings combined grossing close to double their expectations — counterbalanced the grim result of a Marvel release collapsing in its second weekend.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) retained its #1 position the second weekend but with a 70 percent drop — the biggest fall ever for a Marvel title from the studio. “Black Widow” at 68 percent was the previous worst decrease (it also had PVOD access on Disney+). It’s slightly worse than “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” which, at the time, felt like a bad omen for that Warner Bros. franchise.
It’s a warning sign, though hardly suggestive of any imminent danger, that theaters can’t assume franchise/comic book movies will always sustain box office. That’s why when two much lower budget titles — both originals, both with less than guaranteed results — do quite well, it establishes that there are alternatives to comic book universe sequels.

There are defining roles that come along once or maybe twice a lifetime, and I have to say that voicing the glorious gato Puss in Boots for almost two decades has made a huge impact in my life. Of course, when I was first asked to play this beautifully imagined and animated character, I had no idea that it would have such a phenomenal global appeal and lasting power.
Coming back to voice the memorable hero for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has been a remarkable experience. I felt like I was visiting a very dear, clever friend that I hadn’t heard from in a few years. We both have grayer whiskers and are no longer the brash, young players we used to be. But we’re now wiser and more introspective — or at least I hope so!

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
Nana Connie and Marcel (Isabella Rossellini and Jenny Slate)
The birth of the profound and heartwarming 1-inch shell voiced by Jenny Slate was an unusual situation that began years before the movie was made, with a series of animated shorts that Slate wrote with her then-husband, director Dean Fleischer Camp, beginning in 2010.
“It actually was a character that started with her joking around in this tiny voice about how small she felt, and then I developed the design and the animation of Marcel based on that voice,” recalls Camp. “It’s been a very long journey where we are both mutually building upon this original riff and adding parts to his character and to his world. I don’t exactly know how to separate my contributions from hers, because it has been such a mind meld, but I think that Jenny brings a real...

Early numbers are beginning to pour in and it appears that I was right on the money with my prediction as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to hit 100 million for the 3-day weekend after posting a 17.5 million Thursday preview. This will make Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania the third highest grossing President’s Day weekend film after Black Panther’s 202 million in 2018 and Deadpool’s 132.4 million in 2016. Reviews for this miniature adventure have been quite dismal, with critics saying this third outing lacks the fun the original two films had as it currently sits as the second worst reviewed film of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (with Eternals’ 47 only 1 point lower on Rotten Tomatoes). However there is a gap forming between critics and fans as the audience score currently sits at 84. Our own JimmyO gave the film an 8/10 in his review, however if I were to rate the...

Studios that utilized theaters to boost PVOD prospects saw their efforts pay off this week. The 19.99 “Plane” (Lionsgate) and “M3GAN” (Universal) lead the VOD charts, followed by Christmas titles “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/24.99) and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Sony/19.99). With studios recouping 14 or more from each transaction, that’s a bonanza — especially with three of those films still in the box office top 10. Synergy at last!
“Plane” is #1 on iTunes and Vudu, #2 on Google Play, with the order reversed for “M3GAN.” “Puss” is #3 on Google Play, fourth on the others. “Whitney,” new this week, is #3 on Vudu and #7 on iTunes. It has yet to chart at Google Play (which often lags), but perhaps it isn’t helped by the site listing it as a “documentary.” “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/6.99) took the #3 spot at iTunes.

Refresh for latest…: The latest rerelease of James Cameron’s Titanic 3D has buoyed the big boat movie to 2.217B globally, meaning it still stands as the No. 3 worldwide release of all time. Right in its wake, Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has now reached 2,213.5M, still the fourth biggest movie ever and less than 4M from Titanic through Sunday. It will overtake Titanic, it’s just a matter of when.
Last session, Way of Water had cruised past Titanic internationally for the No. 3 spot of all time overseas, and holds onto that crown after this weekend with 1.567B through Sunday.
Either way, Cameron was indeed king of the (box office) world this frame, with 22.3M from the Titanic reissue (Paramount has domestic and Disney overseas) as well as 25.8M for 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Way of Water.

Welcome to the weird world of theatrical movies, the weekly scramble to find a formula that fills seats. “Knock at the Cabin” returned Universal to #1 for the first time since October, despite several big hits including “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “M3GAN.”
“80 for Brady” closely followed, with most theaters (with Paramount’s encouragement) capping prices all day to matinee cost. It grossed 12.5 million, significantly above expectations, to take second place. After seven weeks at the top, “Avatar: The Way of Water” dropped to #3.
That meant three films over 10 million and its the first time that’s happened on this weekend since 2017. (This February weekend usually faces Super Bowl competition, which we’ll see next week.) In 2017, the #1 film was another M. Night Shylamalan title, “Split.” It also opened to 14 million; with today’s higher ticket prices, it would be around 17 million.

While no major threat to Avatar: The Way of Water‘s manor at the top of the box office, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish still managed to pull in impressive numbers. While it would trail significantly behind James Cameron’s delayed sequel, for counter-programming, it fared very well in second place. Its domestic total would come out to just over 140M. The films have always been a success, so what’s in store for the future? You might say…an All-Star might come back. Although, Eddie Murphy would proudly like to return to the role of Donkey, Shrek, himself is currently an open option to return according to RadioTimes.

Until this year, my only Puss in Boots-related wish was that I would never have to sit through another film from the Shrek franchise as long as I lived. I must confess, the unexpectedly entertaining Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has entirely changed my mind!
Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) squandered eight of his nine lives with a devil-may-care panache. He sang, danced and swashbuckled his way through a legendary series of adventures but his melodious pursuit of a giant may have seen the bell toll for the last time on those carefree days. Then a standoff with a foe who cannot be quipped into submission shakes the marmalade marauder to his core.
What happens when the charismatic poster puss of living for tomorrow suddenly fears he will not make it through today? Mortality is a mighty foe.

Just-released “M3GAN” and previous #1 “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (both 19.99) took the top two spots on the revenue-based Vudu chart as well as on the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play.
As for the top Oscar nominees, some got the chance to make up for weaker grosses in theaters But for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/19.99) the rich get richer.
Daniels’ metaverse success, which led with 11 nominations, reached home viewing almost seven months ago. It returned to 1,400 theaters this weekend and added 1 million to its 70 million domestic box office. Other than Animated Feature nominee “Puss,” it was the only nominee to make all three charts.
Even more impressive, “Everything” increased its VOD price to 19.99. That includes downloading, but this is an unusual if not unprecedented move.
Among other nominees, “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/5.99), “TÁR,” (Focus/5.99), and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (Searchlight/3.99) — the last two are also streaming — made two charts each,...

Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll when he learns that he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.
The first Puss in Boots movie is one that I deeply enjoyed, which is something that I’m in the vast minority of. The decade-spanning Shrek franchise is quite possibly my favourite kids/family franchise of all time. Each movie in the series (except for the colossally disappointing Shrek the Third) holds a place near and dear to my heart.
So many kid’s movies get a bad reputation for being, well, only for kids. But, the Shrek movies prove that animated movies can be hugely enjoyable for adults too.

Eddie Murphy is more than ready to reprise Donkey in a fifth “Shrek” movie or a Donkey-centric spinoff. So far, only Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots has gotten the “Shrek” spinoff treatment with 2011’s “Puss in Boots” and 2022’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” According to Murphy, Donkey is far funnier and more worthy of the spinoff treatment than Puss.
“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” Murphy told ETalk in a recent interview. “You know, they did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
Murphy continued, “I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another ‘Shrek’ in two seconds.”

Yes, "Shrek" fans, Eddie Murphy would love to do "Shrek 5" - and he wants a Donkey movie, too. The "You People" star recently shared his thoughts on returning to the Shrek franchise in an interview with CTV's Etalk.
"I would do another Shrek in two seconds," he said, before adding the ball is in Dreamworks's court. "That's Dreamworks Animation. They have to want to do it. Dreamworks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I'm ready, I'm sitting and ready to do Donkey."
Murphy also got candid about wanting his fast-talking, wise-cracking character Donkey to finally get his own spinoff. "I love Donkey. You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. Streaming service Peacock closed 2022 with more than 20 million paid subscribers, helping Comcast slip past Wall Street estimates during a challenging fourth quarter in the media business.
Total revenue came in at 30.55 billion in the period, less than 1 ahead of the prior-year quarter but just above analysts’ consensus. Earnings per share of 70 cents fell short of estimates, but exceeded them on an adjusted basis.
Along with Peacock, which added 5 million subscribers during the quarter, a strong return for theme parks helped NBCUniversal post a revenue increase of 6 to 9.9 billion. Advertising revenue rose 4, which the company credited to Spanish-language coverage of the World Cup by Telemundo and an upswing in Peacock ad revenue. After launching in mid-2020, Peacock struggled to gain traction in the early going, hurt more than most new streaming players by Covid’s impact on live sports and original production. If you want to see the #1 film in the world (and see it properly), you need to buy a ticket at a movie theater. And that likely will remain the case for “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) for the indefinite future.
But it’s different for the #2 and (it appears) the #3 top-grossing titles in domestic theaters, at least as of Tuesday. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/19.99) marks its third week atop all three VOD charts we track. And multiple sources indicate that “M3GAN,” following the studio’s normal strategy for films that debut in theaters to less than 50 million, will add home rental platforms as well. (Universal did not respond to a request for confirmation).
“Puss” came out on only the third weekend of play in theaters, yet in successive weekends stayed strong. Its hold in consecutive weekends was down 19 percent, up 7 percent, down 21 percent this weekend.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a bonafide puss in loot, as it will cross the 300M mark globally with today’s grosses included.
The highly reviewed sequel and Shrek spinoff is at 297.8M with Sunday’s worldwide actuals included. Directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the adventure has surpassed Croods: The New Age and Encanto to become the third-biggest studio animation title of the pandemic era, both overseas and globally.
Puss 2 currently sits behind two other Universal animated films (Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2) across the pandemic years. In the near-view rear-view, 2022 has now become the first year since 2008 where every DreamWorks animated release outgrossed every Pixar and Disney Animation release during the same year.

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.
#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.
This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

We've been following Norwegian director Patrik Syversen in these pages for quite some time now. In 2008 Syversen was at the leading edge of the current wave of Scandinavian genre film with his indie slasher Rovdyr - released here as Manhunt - and has since relocated temporarily to the Us to direct the After Dark film Prowl. Well, Syversen was a busy man while on these shores, connecting with fellow expat Marie Kristiansen to shoot something entirely different - the indie drama Exteriors.
Manhunt and Prowl director Patrik Syversen and Artist Marie Kristiansen have directed and produced a new feature in Hollywood.
The two La based directors met through mutual friends in La, and were inspired by the many out of work people with dreams of making it big. Together, they decided to document and dramatize their experiences.

He's ruthless, occasionally mean and easy (very easy) on the eyes. If you're not getting enough of your Skarsgård fix with weekly episodes, I have a little treat for you. Meet the other side of Skarsgård. The Swedish side.
Directed by Johan Kling, Trust Me ("Puss") stars Skarsgård alongside his brother Gustaf Skarsgård in "a comical fresco on human misdemeanours and betrayals, dealing with sex, alcoholism, acne, voyeurism, cleptomania, pregnancy…"
Can't tell you if the film is funny because I can't understand what anyone's saying but Alexander in a red kimono certainly caught my attention and the trailer does suggests a few funny bits. Considering the popularity of Skarsgård, I don't doubt an American distributor stepping in and bringing this to a wider North American audience.
