In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

In late 2011, William Eubank took a job as second unit director of Allen Hughes’ Broken City. Hughes hired Eubank off of early footage from his feature directorial debut, Love (2011), which is a Kubrickian arthouse film that he made in collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves. The second-unit gig was especially meaningful because it not only landed Eubank his DGA card, but it also marked the beginning of his career-long trajectory with Broken City’s co-lead, Russell Crowe, who’s now leading his action-thriller, Land of Bad.
In 2016, while Crowe was on the promotional trail for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Eubank met up with him to discuss his now long-gestating fantasy actioner, World Breaker, however, despite Crowe’s interest at the time, the filmmaker was pulled away when Underwater got the green light from 20th Century Fox. It didn’t take long to see the problem after Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again paused production in mid-June during the writers strike. Fewer than half of the series’ 18 episodes had been shot, but it was enough for Marvel executives, including chief Kevin Feige, to review the footage and come away with a clear-eyed assessment: The show wasn’t working.
So, in late September, Marvel quietly let go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and also released the directors for the remainder of the season as part of a significant creative reboot of the series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The studio is now on the hunt for new writers and directors for the project, which stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer turned superhero.

It’s hard to imagine that the unforgettable on-screen connection between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, including their iconic dance sequence, was almost derailed.
The main roles in the comedy-drama were first offered to Anne Hathaway and Mark Wahlberg, who were set to play Tiffany and Pat, respectively. But after Hathaway dropped out of the project, director David O. Russell cast Cooper instead of his good friend, Wahlberg, who reportedly wanted a special clause in the event that Hathaway backed out.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and filmmakers and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, Conor and I return to The City on a Hill to discuss the career of Mark Wahlberg. The B-Sides include: Contraband, Broken City, The Gambler, and All the Money in the World.
Among the many Wahlberg-related topics that come up, one of the biggest is his continued, consistent success as a movie star. Contrary to what I wrote the Broken City review seven years back, Mark Wahlberg is anything but a “second-tier movie star.” If anything, he’s a more successful version of Bruce Willis when analyzing the box-office receipts.
Additional issues include the two kinds of Mark Wahlberg (tough guy with a heart of gold or high-pitched intellectual), and what the latter kind can get you.

Mark Wahlberg may be an Academy Award nominated actor and producer, former rapper, underrated comedian, restaurateur and regularly finds himself named as one of the highest-paid talents in Hollywood, but over the last two decades you’re a whole lot more likely to see him starring in a run of the mill action thriller than a prestige drama, comedy or family film.
The 49 year-old has built a decent career out of headlining mid-budget genre movies that do solid if unspectacular business at the box office and are the subjects of middling but hardly scathing reviews. If you were looking for one of Wahlberg’s efforts that saw him playing a character with a military or law enforcement background that wields a gun on the poster, there are hardly a shortage of options to choose from.

Exclusive: Warner Bros has just set Albert Hughes to direct a reboot of The Fugitive. Brian Tucker (Broken City) is writing the script, and Erik Feig will produce the film.
The studio intends on putting a new spin on the Andrew Davis-directed 1993 action classic, an exhilarating action film based on the 1963 TV series that starred David Janssen as Kimble and Barry Morse as Gerard. The film earned seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture, with Tommy Lee Jones winning for Best Supporting Actor for playing the dogged U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard, who chased Harrison Ford’s Dr. Richard Kimble. The doc was accused of murdering his wife and was hellbent on finding the one-armed man who actually did it and with whom Kimble struggled after the killing.

It’s not often that we think or talk about the religious beliefs of our favorite superheroes, barring the times when writers blatantly state from where these characters are coming. For example, we’re all aware of how Daredevil’s a devout Catholic, or how Batwoman’s Jewish.
Speaking of which, the latest issue of Batman really hammered home the point that the Dark Knight is, in fact, an atheist. I mean, it’s technically nothing new and has been somewhat explored in the past (I believe it was Broken City that briefly touched on this before), but the latest entry into Tom King’s ongoing saga has really gotten people talking.
You see, this all came about in the concluding chapter of “Cold Days,” an arc that saw Bruce Wayne sit on a jury deciding the fate of Mr. Freeze after he was apprehended by Batman himself. To me,...

Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of MoviePass, has acquired the exclusive option to buy Emmett Furla Oasis Films, the producers of “Lone Survivor” and “End of Watch,” Variety has learned.
If completed, the deal will enable the company to buy the entire film library and current production slate of Efo Films. Helios and Matheson plans to use the library and the filmmaking expertise of Efo Films to launch its own production company, MoviePass Films. Randall Emmett and George Furla will serve as co-ceo’s of the new venture.
The deal comes as MoviePass, best known for allowing customers to see a movie a day for less than $10 a month, is facing questions about its long-term future and current capitalization. Last week, Helios and Matheson’s stock fell to 40 cents-a-share, its lowest closing price, amid investor alarm about a cash shortage. In October, Helios and Matheson’s stock had been trading at $38.86 a share.

Matt Reeves has been deep into the development of The Batman for Warner Bros. and after a fan recently asked how it was coming along, the director offered a brief but enthusiastic response.

The Batman director Matt Reeves has offered an update on his development of the film. In the past, he talked about all the comic book research he was doing for the film and he said that he wanted to focus on the detective aspect of the character. We also know that the filmmaker was looking to plan a trilogy, but he said that he has to start with one first. Now it seems he has locked in the story he wants to tell and he is currently in the process of outlining it.
While a guest on Jeff Goldsmith's podcast The Q&A, Reeves said, "I am outlining, I have the story worked out and I am outlining."
This isn't a huge update, but it offers a little insight on where the project currently stands. It also gives us an opportunity to talk about the things that we would...

If you’re reading this, there’s a very strong chance that you have some level of familiarity with Frank Miller’s immortal classic, The Dark Knight Returns (Dkr). Since its original publication in the mid-1980’s, it’s managed to change the way mainstream outlets view the comic book industry, been adapted to an animated feature, and has influenced countless other Batman comics – along with several of the live action films.
So, when the acclaimed author rolled out the sequel that was The Dark Knight Strikes Again! (DK2) back in 2001, expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, it didn’t reach the bar that its predecessor did, but we’re happy to say that the threequel – Dark Knight III: The Master Race – has lived up to the legacy of the original, with the collected edition undergoing a slight re-titling of Batman: The Dark Knight: Master Race.

Sometimes, when you’re documenting history, you still have to make your own moments.
“When the camera’s rolling and when I yell cut, I made sure my team knew, ‘Don’t ever cut until the subject is off the set,'” Hughes said.
Some of the most satisfying moments in the new HBO docuseries, “The Defiant Ones” — an expansive, four-part history of the last four decades of popular music, premiering Sunday night on HBO — are candid ones. Interview subjects occasionally tinker away on a keyboard or wander around a living room. Stevie Nicks plunks out a tune on a baby grand. Eminem strolls right onto set and starts dishing. As Hughes described in a recent interview with IndieWire, those moments were part of the plan from the beginning.

Despite thinking the Wonder Woman/Tasmanian Devil mashup was alright, the wealth of DC’s recently released Looney Tunes crossovers just haven’t managed to capture my interest. But, when you throw in the Dark Knight, I’ll give just about any absurd idea a read. Thus, I’ll be investing some time in Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 when it comes across my desk.
Some of the more stone-faced of you out there may ask how I could bring myself to do such a thing (the more light-hearted among you may very well be all in), but you, too, may give it a chance upon reading that “after a chance meeting with billionaire Bruce Wayne, Elmer Fudd’s obsession quickly escalates into stalking Batman through the dark alleys and high-class social settings of Gotham City. Welcome to Bat Season!” Yes, that all came from the official synopsis, showing us that we may end up seeing a darker side to Elmer.
Actually, if you’ve managed to browse through the gallery at the top, you’d see that writer Tom King and artist Lee Weeks somehow managed to make this look about as hard-boiled as something by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, and as noir-ish as the legendary works of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Sure, we may not end up putting this in the same class as either Broken City or The Long Halloween, but you have to admit that it’s showing promise.
Also included will be a backup story more visually in line with classic Looney Tunes, also written by King, but with art provided by Byron Vaughns. That one, however, may not end up enthralling me as much, but I’ll still give it a whirl.
Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 arrives in comic shops next Wednesday, June 28.

Ever since Matt Reeves stepped into the director's chair for The Batman, there's been no concrete information on what we can expect from the film. Today, however, we learned from the director that his film will be influenced and inspired by the films of the great Alfred Hitchcock. If any comic book film could fit in with Hitchcock's filmmaking style, it's Batman!
While talking to CNET during the press tour for his upcoming film War for the Planet of the Apes., the director explained:
"For me, point of view is really important. I want to make sure you are experiencing something from the perspective of the main character in the story. I'm a huge Hitchcock fan -- I like the idea of being immersed in that perspective."
It'll be interesting to see how he incorporates the things he loves about Hitchcock into The Batman. Hitchcock was known as the Master of Suspense, and it'd be great to see a truly suspenseful Batman film.
I've always wanted to see a film noir-style Batman movie where we get to see the story really dig into him being a detective. I know some people might think that's a boring way to go, but Batman is known as "The Worlds Greatest Detective", I think it's about time he lived up to that title in the films.
Don't get me wrong, Batman has done some detective work in his films, but I'm talking about Se7en-style detective work. Comic book story arcs like Batman Unseen, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Black Mirror, and Broken City. These stories relied more on his detective work than his fighting skills and would all work great with a Hitchcockian style.
Who knows what he's planning, though. He said they are just starting on developing the project, so there's a long way to go!
What kind of Batman film would you want to see Reeves make?...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Unfocused like a 1970s cast-of-thousands disaster flick, and with little point beyond engaging in bland and easy propagandistic cheering. Boston deserves better. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg’s previous collaborations

There are likely hundreds of amazing, moving stories to be told about the 2013 bombing at the finish line of Boston’s annual marathon… and dang if Patriots Day — named after the local holiday on which the bombing occurred — doesn’t seem to want to tell all of them all at once.
Patriots Day barely introduces us to one set of characters before jumping away to another.
Director and screenwriter (with Matt Cook and Joshua Zetumer) Peter Berg might have been more successful zooming in on star Mark Wahlberg’s composite cop character Tommy Saunders...

I first saw Carol at the London Film Festival last October. So, three months ago. And I’ve been terrified to write about it ever since. This happens sometimes with a movie I fall in love with, because I fear that nothing I could say would do it justice, that I would somehow diminish it with words that fail to capture how transcendent it is. I’ve seen the film twice more since — including again just this morning — in the hope that something would inspire me to feel as if I could pin it down in a fair way.

In danger of setting itself up for a fall with pun-happy critics if it doesn’t land well, a new action thriller with Adrien Brody attached as the lead comes bearing the title Expiration. And if the concept feels a tad familiar, that’s because it’s a spin on an idea that has been tackled before – the tough guy with a ticking time clock, last seen, in some version at least, with Kevin Costner and 3 Days To Kill. Expiration, which has a script from Broken City’s Brian Tucker, finds Brody as a rogue former CIA agent who has turned to the life of a hitman. Because that sort of career switch rarely works out well for anyone in film, he wakes up in hospital after a failed assassination attempt that was supposed to seal his retirement from his killer career with his veins pulsing in the grip of poison.

The only good thing about Sinister was Ethan Hawke’s portrayal of a writer having what looked like a mental breakdown, to the degree that it was easy to suspect that perhaps he was the perpetrator of the family murder he was investigating for a true-crime book. Before that film was half over, however, such a potentially intriguing scenario was rendered impossible, and Sinister became yet another by-the-numbers demon-haunted funhouse. And here’s Sinister 2, which doesn’t have anything so minimally compelling going for it.

How many Mark Wahlbergs are there? I ask because I like the guy who showed up in this week's "Ted 2." I like goofball Mark Wahlberg. I like belligerent Boston Mark Wahlberg. I do not particularly care for serious action mode Mark Wahlberg. And when I look at the ones I don't like side-by-side with the ones I like, I find it hard to reconcile that this is all one person. So again… I ask… how many Mark Wahlbergs are there? Academy Award winner Russell Crowe makes his directorial debut on 'The Water Diviner,' an epic and inspiring tale of one man's life changing journey of discovery.
