The Promise
Tweekums18 February 2022
This French series opens in December 1999; a storm is battering the area and eleven year old Charlotte Meyer is cycling along her forest road. After the chain comes off her bike somebody in a van offers her a lift... she isn't seen again. Detective Pierre Castaing is in charge of the case; he believes Serge Fouquet is responsible but he has an alibi and another man, Tony Andreï, has confessed. Cutting to the present day somebody tries to grab another young girl; she manages to escape and evidence once again points to Fouquet... this time the investigator is Pierre's daughter, Captain Sarah Castaing. Fouquet is arrested again but it soon emerges that another girl has been taken... the race is on to find her. As the series progresses we see Sarah's investigation intertwined with flashbacks of her father's attempts to solve the original case.

I really enjoyed this series; at only six episodes it doesn't drag, nor does it feel overly rushed. There is a good sense of tension; this is raised by the fact that the series makes no secret of the fact that the latest kidnapped girl is alive in captivity and we regularly see her. There are some obvious clichés, notable the leading investigator continuing after being taken off the case and also getting involved with a suspect. The ending was far from obvious; I had a few theories as to what happened but none came close to the truth. The cast is solid; with Sofia Essaïdi and Olivier Marchal impressing as Sarah and Pierre Castaing and Guy Lecluyse is suitably unpleasant as Fouquet. Overall a solid crime drama that kept me gripped till the end.

Unexpectedly well done!

Influenced by the, in my opinion, relatively low rating (7.0/10 out of 116 ratings at Aug 28 2021), this series positively surprised me in quite a few matters: reasonable plot (not a whodunit but about the hunt on a horrible child kidnapper), as well as the acting. Very good camera work and direction and some fine music. Exiting and tensive till the end... A recommendation to everyone who likes a solid and firm thriller.

Really good, why so less reviews?

Really good series, nice and unexpected end! I think the story line with Sarah and her dad is really good.

Great series ruïned by a major plot hole
hharmm8 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Would have been a great series if not for the major plot hole. Dad kills himself for fear his daughter wil be wrongfully incriminated in the first death. But we have seen them together as a family in the car in the woods at that exact time!. So she has a perfect alibi! Plus the accuser would not have been credible even if she hadn't had that. Apparently dad and the writer and director forgot???

Very enjoyable but with a rather disappointing ending

Warning: Spoilers
Overall it was very good and was heading for an 8 until the last episode which was a real anticlimax for me. Great cast and acting and story builds well until the denouement in episode 6.

As other reviewers have noted there are plot holes and the ending could have been so much better but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Unbelievable ending

Warning: Spoilers
This series was really great for five and a half episodes but oh the ending. Are we supposed to believe an experienced police officer would accept the word of an accused person just like that and kill himself for it? Shame because as previously stated this was well entertaining.

Engaging thriller
nicholls_les28 February 2022
I did enjoy this series over all, it was engaging with good characters and was at times tense. I do agree with others that the ending was somewhat disappointing. But it was well acted and directed throughout and I will watch the next series.

Sofia Essaïdi and Elisa Ezzedine were both good as Sarah Castaing. Leslie Medina as Lilas Castaing was full of character and a little underused in the story. Olivier Marchal as Pierre Castaing was good until the last episode as others have said, but that was the writing, not his acting.

Ok - but Spiral was much, much better
JamesR197326 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was an interesting mini series and I thought the format of the two timelines worked quite well (even if the younger Sarah looked nothing like the older one). There was some great cinematography and the whole production was fairly atmospheric with above average acting performances.

But there were some inconsistencies. As already mentioned, would the father really kill himself over such an accusation, especially as he would have known his daughter couldn't have been involved? It did feel like it was stretching credibility.

In addition, some of the actions of the lead policewoman were just all over the place: sleeping with a possible suspect, randomly just investigating stuff without consulting anyone, having that stroppy manner that means she rubs colleagues up the wrong way. As a result, you just don't seem to warm to her at all (this appears quite common in European police dramas - see also the Italian "Thou Shalt Not Kill). Unfortunately , a lot of the plot and situations were fairly cliche - "oddball" accused of something in the past, detective with incredible artistic skills leaving "clues" in notebooks etc.

I'll be honest in that the ending was a bit of a let down and at times borderline comical. It felt that the writers almost let Anais off the hook by making it out to be an accident. If it was all about revenge, and trying to pin everything on Tony, what was with the weird princess/fairy stuff at the end?

But, the cherry on the cake, has to be the final sequence seeing her father smiling at her in the chair. It felt like the end of Return of the Jedi - he only needed a shimmering blue glow to complete the look.

I appreciate that Spiral was built over many, many years - but it did have realistic character development and great writing. If you'd told me beforehand that it was done by the same people I wouldn't have believed you.

Gripping! Another success for the talented creators
BaronVonKolisch8 April 2022
Like Spiral before it, this drama benefits greatly from top class script-writing and a classy, consistent delivery.

These are not the carbon-copy cops that we see in most TV murder-mysteries, but rather, carefully crafted individuals with well engineered backstories.

I was even convinced by the acting of Olivier Marchal, despite finding him dull and uninspiring in other productions, such as The Crimson Rivers. - 8.8/10.

Entertaining but agree about massive plot hole
beatrizperezcayon22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Like another reviewer pointed out, the dad would have never believed his daughter was with Anáis when Charlotte was killed.

The whole family were in the car together and stuck in that muddy field.

Doesn't make any sense. How could no one making the show realise?

Other than that and a few cliches, like the car not starting and having no mobile coverage, I did enjoy it and it killed an afternoon.

Continuity Blunder

Excellent series..But Young Sarah has a mole on the left side of her face and older Sarah on the right. Wonder how they could make such a Blunder. But the series is very gripping, great acting and great direction.

Leaves a stone unturned

Warning: Spoilers
Largely very good but huge unexplained bits, suggesting room for a sequel; (just to get my one complaint out of the way, the ultra-sentimental ending was sickly). But why did Ainis want to kidnap & kill the little girl? It could not just have been continuing jealousy. How did she afford her big house - she must have been a greater criminal than suggested. Why were the silver boots at the old suspect's house. It's OK to have misleading pointers to keep up suspense, but they must make sense.

Was promising but plot devices/holes poor.

So a top cop believes the word of a wee girl over the fact he was in a car with the girl she accused at the time of the offence? Could have been much better if somebody had paid attention to the screenplay.

Inconsistent, but good.
crumpytv25 February 2022
A good production and better than we seem to be able to produce in the UK these days.

I like the way the viewer was left to work things out before it became obvious towards the end of the first episode.

The structure continued well up until half way through the 6 episodes, then it lost its way.

The prime suspect suddenly was found guilty of another crime, although it was hardly mentioned, and disappeared from the story.

A lot of questions were not answered, or asked come to that (Lilas's criminal history as an adult for instance).

In the end the solution was all rather muddled, implausible and disappointing.

Why was Tony released?
btownes-9724516 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I found it very involving up until it unravelled at the end. Folks here have pointed out the major plot hole but I also don't think we are ever told why the original suspect, Tony, was released?

Very watchable

Good acting and a sound plot with standout performances by the kids! The connection to hometown and family was a bit over the top but overall very watchable.

At times this is a good watch, good acting and I like the way they handle the time switches. On the other hand. At he end of episode 4. Where did the matches comes from ?? Silly. It's errors like that, that made me give it a 4.

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't hate this show and I liked it enough to finish all 6 episodes. I usually love European crime shows and don't mind slow but tense drama, but this one was a bit boring. I found it hard to concentrate at times. I wasn't a fan of the ending either, it all became a little silly toward the end. Are you telling me that the sniffer dogs didn't find her body in the forest 20 years ago? And for 29 years through more storms and people walking their dogs and all the searches no one found her, so close to her home?

Unbelievable.
nineteeneightyfivet12 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is weightless drifting overlong character posing from the start. So, so drawn out. Could of been watchable and engaging neat and tidy in 2 episodes.

Watched this based on the constant references to "..from the creators of 'Spiral'," well you could have fooled me. Spiral was committed to authenticity, depth of character , developing and engaging storyline and interwoven plot lines. The Promise gave me lazy posing, cliche after cliche ( including lots of wavy forest skies ) and lashings of cheese, so much so I half expected Obe one and Anakin to appear at the end of the table in the final scene!

Disappointing.

Nonsense
lanceblack16 February 2022
Cliche after cliche after cliche. Another example of good cinematography and decent acting hiding bad writing and ridiculous narrative: "you're off the case!" "You're breaking all the rules!" "Lone female cop wins the day after being derided by male colleagues" Etc etc etc.

Doesn't live up to its Promise!
wheatley-202305 March 2022
I read a review comparing this to Spiral and began watching in high hopes. It becomes clear very quickly that this isn't going to attain that high standard. Spiral built up tension and sucked you in. This dissipates tension as unlikely actions and reactions increase in number, eventually rendering the whole thing rather laughable.

We did watch it to the end as our decision to cease came with only 1 episode left. We should have decided sooner!

Disappointing
cervus-0976723 January 2023
Disappointing, compared to French TV's Spiral and The Bureau. This show re-uses every thumping cliche about child sexual abuse. It's a lazy premise. In addition, it is sad to see the actress Mule made to look silly. In The Bureau (what a terrific show) she was a smart, empathetic and dignified police officer. In this show she wears some kind of ridiculous head-dress or hairstyle, like a low-rent Aida. I can't look without laughing at her. The head-dress spoils any scene she's in.

On the show's positive side, the atmospherics of rain, wind and trees are good. Nice portrait of western France. Sharp, well-thought-out photography. The acting is all right.

Poor storyline gets progressively worse.
iain-1342017 February 2022
This really can't be compared to Spiral which apparently is from same production team and the reason I watched.

A female police detective who's bad at her job surely isn't the ideal protagonist for this flawed series.

It just about gets to episode five with some credibility before bringing on a series of risible belly laughs - which is obviously not the audience response the producers are hoping for.

Maybe just one day there will be a detective who has a supportive partner, that would be radical. And that is just one of the many cliches that abound in the poor script.
