The success of Alan Parks as a TV interviewer and talk-show host, which has led to American TV work, clearly parallels the great TV success of a real-life Cambridge graduate of the same period, David Frost. However, the fact that Parks is an Australian led many viewers to suspect the character was a caricature of Clive James, although the latter's television career was then only in its very early days and he was, in 1976, best known as the television critic of "The Observer" newspaper. It may be that James himself agreed with these viewers, as his several comments on "The Glittering Prizes" during its run were all very negative.
