Hollywood’s next bidding war is about to erupt. “Eruption,” the much-discussed upcoming volcano disaster novel from the late Michael Crichton and James Patterson, is about to be brought to auction, attracting a large group of suitors keen on landing the sought-after film rights.
The auction, being conducted by Shane Salerno at the Story Factory and CAA, will begin within the next two weeks, and could kick off as early as next week, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The project has drawn interest from most major studios, streamers and networks, as well as high-profile directors who have shared that they’d leap at the chance to helm a Crichton project. Projects created by the author or adapted from his work include the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Twister” and “Westworld.” Crichton was also the creator of “ER,” which Variety is told brought in over $3.2 billion for Warner Bros.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) are set to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford, and Deadline reports that A24 has just boarded the project to handle its domestic distribution.
Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. A24 has officially signed on to John Patton Ford’s “Huntington” (working title) for U.S. distribution. Also joining are new cast members Ed Harris and Margaret Qualley, who will star alongside the previously announced Glen Powell.
“Huntington” is a revenge thriller that follows Becket Redfellow (Powell), the “heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves.”
Ford will direct “Huntington” (or whatever it is titled by then). He already wrote the original screenplay, which was inspired by the film’s financier Studiocanal’s “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” the classic 1949 crime film starring Alec Guinness, who famously played eight different roles in the film.

NBCUniversal is looking to wring more money out of Peacock subscribers, with the streamer set to raise prices this summer — one year after its last fee hike — going into effect for new customers ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
Beginning in mid-July, the price for Peacock Premium (with ads) will increase by $2 to $7.99 per month and Peacock Premium Plus (mostly ad-free) is also going up by $2 to $13.99 per month. Peacock Premium’s annual price will increase from $59.99 to $79.99, while Premium Plus is going from $119.99 to $139.99 per year.
The new prices will be effective starting July 18 for new Peacock customers and for existing subscribers with their next billing date on or after Aug. 17.
The Peacock Premium Plus tier provides ad-free content, the ability to download episodes and live local NBC channels. Due to streaming rights, per NBCU, a “small amount of programming” still contains ads on some Peacock channels, events, and a few shows and movies.

Who says this summer is light on blockbuster fare, despite the strikes holding productions and release dates up?
Big movies coming to theaters in the next hot few months include favorite IP getting a 2024 burnish, from “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” to “Alien: Romulus” and “Twisters”. Oh, and a little movie called “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (May 24), which George Miller will first bring to the Cannes Film Festival before opening it in theaters later that month. Plus, poised to be a Netflix hit this summer is Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” (May 24 in theaters), playing for a couple of weeks in select cities before the crime comedy starring Glen Powell hits the streaming platform.
But those bigger-ticket titles aside, summer 2024 is a time for indies to shine, from Annie Baker’s long-awaited festival hit “Janet Planet” (June 14) to India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance premiere “Good One” (August...

The Running Man (1987) was one of Stephen King's earliest books. In a dystopian version of America's future, an impoverished family man named Ben Richards struggles to deal with unemployment and his daughter's mounting medical bills. In desperation, Richards signs up to be on 'The Running Man', a reality show where contestants try to evade highly trained killers. For every hour that they survive, they earn money. If they manage to live for 30 days, they win 1 billion dollars.
Richards has no hope of winning – he's just your average guy, without the physical prowess it will take to outrun and outfight his pursuers. He knows that competing on the show will kill him, but he hopes to live long enough to earn the money it will take to save his family.
Some Major Changes
Five years after the publication of The Running Man, the book was adapted for the big screen.

The ultra-charming and very handsome actor Glen Powell is having quite a run right now, but my dude is far from an overnight success. His first role was as "Long-fingered Boy" in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3" more than 20 years ago, and since then, he's been steadily building his way to stardom. Small roles in "The Great Debaters," "The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Expendables 3" laid the groundwork for his star-making, charisma-filled performance in 2016's "Everybody Wants Some!!" In 2018, he helped resurrect the rom-com with the one-two punch of Netflix films "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (a delightful and underrated gem) and the more popular "Set It Up" opposite Zoey Deutch, which launched him to Internet Boyfriend status.
"Top Gun: Maverick" and "Anyone But You" have cemented him as one of the most exciting male actors of his generation -- the type of guy...

We’re leaving Las Vegas.
CinemaCon 2024 is over — time for studios to go out and prove their pitches at the box office. Based on what we saw, or really what we didn’t see, that will be an uphill battle.
First, let’s take a moment to appreciate the folks and films that showed up. Arguably, the biggest star to attend CinemaCon was Kevin Costner. The cynical point of view? He was pitching not one but two “Horizon” films to theater owners — and simultaneously pitching third and fourth installments to Warner Bros. Plus, Costner received a trophy (the CinemaCon Visionary Award), for which WB execs shooed him offstage just to call him back up. Kinda silly. Speaking of WB execs and no-shows, if David Zaslav was in town, he didn’t come on stage.
Jeff Goldblum did, as did his fellow “Wicked” co-stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh.

Glen Powell has been hired by Edgar Wright, to go where Arnold Schwarzenegger went before in a new take on The Running Man.
If you’ve been following the progress of Edgar Wright’s mooted adaptation of The Running Man, a healthy does of patience has been required but after three years of waiting, we finally have our first real bit of news regarding the project.
First announced back in 2021, development on The Running Man has likely been affected by the global pandemic and Hollywood strikes which have disrupted production and caused many a project to fall by the wayside.
Despite calling it a ‘dream project’, the Shaun Of The Dead director didn’t really offer much in the way of updates until late last year when he confirmed that The Running Man was still alive and in ‘active development.’

Back in 2022, we learned that Edgar Wright had added a potential new version of The Running Man to an already stuffed To Do list. Now, thanks to Paramount's CinemaCon presentation on Thursday, news lands that it has shoved its way to the top of that list, with rising star Glen Powell now aboard to star.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger – and even though that movie was very different from the source material, Schwarzenegger is still a tough act to follow. But now we know who’s brave enough to take on the challenge. Paramount has announced that Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is set to star Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick!
Wright is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.

Writer/director Wright previously announced that he was adapting Stephen King’s 1982 novel “The Running Man” (published under pseudonym Richard Bachman) for another big screen iteration in 2021. Handsome man Glen Powell better get his sneakers on, because he's about to become "The Running Man." Powell will star in Edgar Wright's new adaptation of the Stephen King/Richard Bachman novel, as was announced today at CinemaCon, where we have boots on the ground in the form of our own Ryan Scott. Powell will play the lead character Ben Richards, a man living in a dystopian future where people desperate for money participate in a reality game show where they're hunted for sport. He'll also likely spend the movie looking very handsome and being very charming, because that's his whole thing.
Powell stole the show in "Top Gun: Maverick," and was recently seen in the surprisingly delightful rom-com "Anyone But You." Next, he'll appear in the "Twister" follow-up "Twisters" and the Richard Linklater comedy "Hit Man," which is headed to Netflix. Powell has been working for a while now,...

Glen Powell is lacing up his sneakers.
The “Top Gun: Maverick” star will lead the cast of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man,” taking on a role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 cult favorite. The dystopian action film is based on a novel of the same name by horror maestro Stephen King, which he first published under a pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
Wright, best known for directing the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” will also produce the picture along with Simon Kinberg and Nira Park. The filmmaker, whose work overflows with style and wit, most recently made the psychological horror film “Last Night in Soho.” His other credits include “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
Powell is on a hot streak lately and has found himself in demand by many studios who believe he has the kind of charisma that could make him a major star.

Donna Langley became the first studio mogul to take the stage at CinemaCon this year in a sign of the general angst facing many Hollywood legacy studios.
Sony film boss Tom Rothman’s comments on stage usually turns heads, but his studio stayed home this year. Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav showed up to get to know theater owners, but this year he had scheduling conflicts, so wasn’t part of Warner Bros.’ presentation Tuesday. But like Langley, Paramount chairman Brian Robbins is expected to be part of his studio’s session on Thursday.
Langley has plenty of reason to crow after placing No. 1 in marketshare in 2023 and watching Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer win big at the Oscars.

Twisters might be all tornadoes wrecking the Earth, but at the heart of it is a good banter romance, and that’s what Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have got going on in the latest trailer shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.
That gal-guy back and forth was what was also at the heart of the original 1996 Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.
“You think you can interrupt a tornado,” Powell’s cowboy tornado chaser asks Edgar-Jones’ city girl.
“In theory,” she answers, “in the field and in the moment, I got it wrong. We never had a chance.”
“You want one?” Powell asks, giving her an invitation for a good time.

Director Lee Isaac Chung introduced the footage today during Universal’s presentation at Caesars Colosseum for what he said was his first CinemaCon.

Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes. Twisters got some major love during Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon, with the audience getting to see an extended preview of the movie.
The extended preview starts off at a rodeo, which is disrupted by a giant tornado as bulls and horses run wild amidst the chaos. We see scenes of Powell’s character as assembles a group of storm chasers as two tornados combine to form a super tornado. “It’s alright to be scared… fear is the reason you do it,” Powell’s character says. “You don’t face your fears, you ride them.” Our own Chris Bumbray said that the new footage looks huge with tons of stuff happening, but he added that it looks...

It's been nearly 30 years since tornadoes took the box office by storm with the arrival of the thrilling summer blockbuster "Twister," starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as a pair of estranged ex-lovers who also happen to be passionate storm chasers. Now, Universal Pictures is stirring the storms up yet again with "Twisters."
Though early reports indicated that "Twisters" would follow the daughter of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's characters, it appears the movie is a stand-alone sequel without any characters from the original movie returning. Instead, this is a new chapter following Daisy Edgar-Jones ("Where the Crawdads Sing"), Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick"), Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights"), and Sasha Lane ("Loki"), in an original story that promises to bring the high-speed suspense of "Twister" back to theaters.

There are plenty of ways to describe what happened at Caesars Palace on Wednesday when Universal Pictures delivered Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters to the Colosseum stage. Some examples: The film whipped up a frenzy; exclusive footage spun through Sin City; action scenes blew away theater owners, etc., etc.
All of the above work as Universal debuted never-before-seen scenes of the summer release courtesy of Chung and his castmembers Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who turned up for an extended introduction.
Chung was first to walk out — an appearance that marked his first time at CinemaCon — and the director said that many in the audience might be wondering why he decided to jump into summer blockbuster tentpole territory after carving out a career in independent film. “I’ve been fascinated by tornadoes all my life,” he said, adding that he grew up in Arkansas, where tornadoes were just a way of life.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have somehow found a way to make relentless natural destruction sexy.
The leads of “Twisters,” along with costar Anthony Ramos, showed up onstage at the annual movie theater owners gathering CinemaCon to offer a first look at the sequel to the 1996 adventure film “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
The chemistry between the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Normal People” stars was palpable. The exhibitors ate up Powell as a cocky “tornado wrangler” fond of strutting in wet t-shirts and pushing an absurdly tricked-out pickup truck. The actors were also open about their intense filming conditions, saying they shot in 120-degree heat, got hit with a jet engine, smothered with hay, had a water tank dumped on them, got pelted by ice, were covered in trash and dragged by wires.
While Powell and Edgar-Jones are proven box office draws, the ensemble cast...

Before he was stealing hearts in Set it Up and Anyone But You, flying planes in Top Gun: Maverick, and chasing tornadoes in Twisters, Glen Powell played frat boy Chad Radwell in the Ryan Murphy drama Scream Queens. This short-lived series may have fizzled out with little fanfare in its second and final season, but for many (myself included), this is the project that first put Powell and his charming humor on our radar.
Scream Queens is a slasher comedy, set at the fictional Wallace University in season 1 and the C.U.R.E. Institute medical school in season 2, that follows the girls of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority as they try to stay alive in the midst of a killing spree. The popular girls known as the Chanels are the killer’s primary targets, but the killer isn’t afraid to take the frat boys of the Dickie Dollar Scholars down a peg either.

What happens in Vegas… fuels a year’s worth of hope for theatrical exhibitors.
From April 8-11, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Universal, Paramount, and Disney — not to mention the faith-friendly Angel Studios and anime distributor Crunchyroll — have four days at CinemaCon to wow theater owners (and the press) with their plans for the summer blockbuster season and beyond. However, there are only so many times that NATO, the MPA, and the studios can say “movie theaters are back!” without sounding like Chicken Little.
The reality is 2024 will be lucky to match the levels of last year, and 2025 has its own challenges if the industry faces another round of strikes. Even so, Adam Aron’s hundreds of soldier-owners from his AMC army will be looking to him for reassurance at the world’s biggest exhibition pep rally.

Prior to her latest A24 movie, O’Brian has played parts in projects for Disney like The Mandalorian and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be seen in the upcoming Twisters, where she says, “We filmed a tornado movie during tornado season in Tornado Alley.” She would reveal that her character is “a little sillier” than she has been used to, but she won’t go as far as to call it a comic relief role. “I don’t want to say comedic role, and then everyone’s like, ‘She wasn’t funny.’ We’ll say it’s silly and fun.”

Texas-born actor Glen Powell takes obvious pride in his Lone Star State roots, and still spends significant time at his family’s ranch outside Austin. It must be a particular thrill then to be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame — an annual honor that recognizes the best film talent associated with the state. IndieWire here exclusively announces Powell is now joining the hall of fame’s ranks.
You don’t have to be born in Texas to receive the honor, but you need to have made an impact there.
And what an impact Powell has made in recent years, practically stealing the show out from under Tom Cruise and Miles Teller in “Top Gun: Maverick,” helping bring back the rom-com with “Anyone But You,” and appearing in multiple films by his friend Richard Linklater. Helldivers 2 can be quite stressful especially when players are caught between a rock and a hard place and up against invincible enemies. There is no shame in running, especially if it is a losing battle that requires soldiers to regroup and run for their lives. As players run there is a method that allows them to take offensive action while keeping their distance.
Blind fire is a tactic where a shooter draws his or her firearm by the hip or aims at a direction without the eye being lifted to the weapon sight. It is risky if the shooter fails to hit and injure the target but is effective for close-quarter combat. Doing so can grant the person an extra second to plan and act on their next move while under intense pressure. This method is present in video games like Helldivers 2 and could have helped players survive a bit longer.

Doing so can grant the person an extra second to plan and act on their next move while under intense pressure. This method is present in video games like Helldivers 2 and could have helped players survive a bit longer.

Chalk this up as more information to add to Everything We Know About Twisters. The muscular star of Love Lies Bleeding has broken out with the A24 film since the roles she’s had on The Mandalorian and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but now Katy O’Brian is working out more of her acting muscles in the upcoming natural disaster film, Twisters. Since the announcement of the project, it’s been made clear that the film is not intending to be a direct sequel to the 1996 Jan De Bont blockbuster. However, the Super Bowl spot and trailer for the film do give a nod to Dorothy, the tornado measuring instrument that Jo and Bill (Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s characters) constructed and launched.
O’Brian, coming off her big role in Love Lies Bleeding, has spoken with Entertainment Weekly about her blossoming career, which includes Twisters. She remains mum on all the details,...

Katy O’Brian is about to be a big star — and for audiences who check out Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding,” in which the actress stars alongside Kristen Stewart in an audacious, sexy, unpredictable mash-up of body horror, crime thriller, and love story, that concept will prove to be literally true by the film’s wild end. But she’s not slipping into any Hollywood starlet habits just yet.
Case in point: O’Brian signed on to our Zoom interview a full five minutes early this week (practically unheard of!), and offered to spend our extra time “just chatting.” And O’Brian, whose pre-acting resumes includes everything from bodybuilding to a seven-year stint as a police officer in her native Indiana, is a very good conversationalist.
Before joining “Love Lies Bleeding,” which electrified its Sundance audience and seems destined to join the annals of A24’s boldest films, O’Brian spent time on the small screen,...

Plot: A gym manager, Lou (Kristen Stewart), falls head-over-heels in love with a female bodybuilder, Jackie (Katy O’Brian). But, their bliss is short-lived, as the two end up getting tangled up with Lou’s criminal father (Ed Harris).
Review: Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding is a dark, stylized, ultra-mean-spirited neo-noir. It skates on the edge of perhaps being a little too self-aware for its good in the surreal finale, but it’s still a very entertaining and twisty thriller.
Kristen Stewart is perfectly cast as the laconic noir anti-hero who hooks up now and then with a girl (Anna Baryshnikov), she can’t stand but otherwise leads a lonely life with her cat. Being set in 1989, the constantly smoking Lou is trying to quit with books on tape that have little to no effect, only for her life to be blown up when she sets her eyes on Katy...
