A Very Nice Surprise!
Themattman13 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: Lots of spoilers ahead: Upon reading the first article on Next Avengers (I believe it was Avengers Reborn at the time) I thought to myself "dear mercy, this is either going to be a cheap knockoff of Batman Beyond or the superhero version of Muppet Babies." There was no way in my mind that you could kill off the icons of Marvel Comics, replace them with children and still have a good cartoon. I was wrong! I also thought this was going to be like Spider-Man Unlimited or the 90's Avengers show. Thank goodness, I was wrong there as well.

The cartoon is something along the lines of the Marvel Action hour cartoons from the 90's, just with a better script and much better animation. In fact, having seen the cartoon, I would be more than willing to watch it as a cartoon series. Keep in mind, it is intended for a younger audience, but I think most Marvel fans will enjoy it.

Now, there are flaws. Mainly in that the beginning is done with quite a bit of exposition to get you up to speed on what has transpired in the Marvel U and where the heck these kids came from. I feel that Marvel could have taken an extra 15 minutes and given us a little more to go with than some static shots. But the story is told as a bedtime story to the Avengers' kids, and since it figures into the story later on, I suppose it is all right.

The only other thing that bothered me is that they never explained how Ultron gained that much power. The Avengers have already beaten him several times in the past. The only thing I could think of is maybe after years of being out of commission; the Avengers just couldn't cut it any more.

The kids themselves are pretty well adapted and are very close in persona to their "parents" while being individual enough to not seem like direct rip-offs of the original Avengers. In addition to this, they are also not as strong as their parents. This was what won me over. Marvel could have easily gone off the deep end and made these kids an ultra-powerful super group that every child should want a toy of. They played them off as kids with kid-like uncertainties and still developing skills, however, and it never felt like the kids were supposed to be better than the original avengers. They even needed help from the Hulk, which is a great scene. In the end, all of the kids are very likable, and are very Marvel-esquire.

The writers did good to keep this one just above Saturday morning cartoon level. There wasn't any really painful dialogue. Even Pym, who was supposed to be the annoying little kid of the bunch wasn't annoying enough to stop you from liking him.

The art was nice. The CG used wasn't too overly distracting, and the costume designs were cool and functional and futuristic (keeping with the theme). Iron Man and Hulk both looked good, as did Ultron. The people living below "Ultra City" look like something out of an anime (Origin and Nausicaa come to mind), and seem to serve no other purpose than to explain where Hawkeye's son has been, but it at least explains where the remaining humans have been. The look of the cartoon reminded me of Avatar in a way. Mainly because it has that 'not-quite-anime-but-definitely-influenced-by-it' style that Avatar uses. The animation is very smooth and the fight scenes are energetic and fun to watch. The character designs are nice and, once again, are very much in tune with Marvel. Personally, I liked James' getup. Very retro.

The music was extremely similar to Ultimate Avengers, along with the slightly Danny Elfman-ish theme (which reminded me of the Batman & Robin theme from '97). It fit though, and the music was actually fairly well placed for a direct to DVD movie. The sound effects were also well played, and nothing sounded out of place or distracting.

Voice acting was very good. This is particularly impressive given the age of the voice cast. They all blended very well with each other and fit the characters nicely.

Overall, I think Next Avengers is a very good cartoon and definitely one that kids and Marvel fans will find cool and I recommend it! I really do hope they make more! -Matt

Not entirely on the same level as previous Marvel animated features but still nice!
chrichtonsworld8 September 2008
The Next Avengers is not based on an existing comic. It does however feature characters from the Marvel Universe. Basicaly you can view this cartoon as one of many alternate stories in the Marvel Universe only with one difference. And that is the fact that this cartoon is meant for a younger audience than usual. We get introduced to the children of some of the Avengers. While I have no real objections to this premise I do wonder why these children almost have the same power as their parents. Surely these kids would have some extra or different powers since some of them are products of two parents who both had super abilities. I understand that this is done for recognition and to simplify matters. But it would have been nice to see some new abilities. OK,done with the nitpicking. The story itself is not that impressive. The characters however are fun and there is just enough action to keep you entertained. There are some surprises featured in this cartoon considering you haven't had a good look at the cover of the DVD. Let's just say that a certain character we all love finally gets more screen time then he did in Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2. Overall this is a nice cartoon that plays around with the Marvel mythology.

Decent marvel film but don't draw high expectations...
aryansinha-2917023 July 2018
Marvel's next avengers: heroes of tommorow is a decent film . Not too good not to bad . The concept of the young heroes is good . The first half of the movie looks nice but the second half of the movie is just huge gigantic cliche. But it's ok for marvel to introduce the new generation of avengers

Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2, Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange and now "Next Avengers".

The Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, have been defeated by the machine menace known as Ultron. Presumably the last survivor of that final terrible battle, Iron Man/Tony Stark takes it upon himself to hide the baby children of the Avengers in secret so that Ultron would never find them. He raises them hidden in a underground artificial paradise, constantly spinning them tales about the parents they never knew. Fast forward 13 years later and the children have grown up into fine youngsters, training their individual gifts but longing to find their place in the world. Following a surprise visitation by the Vision and an unfortunate accident, Ultron discovers the location of the Avenger's children and launches an all out attack. Separated from their mentor, Iron Man, and on the run, these "Next Avengers" must live up to their family heritage while dealing with their individual inner turmoil and teenage angst.

How good is the movie? This is my take.

First off, the story is very intriguing and engaging. There is a good amount of mystery and tension in the first act but the second part taking place in Ultron City falls a little bit into futuristic cartoon clichés. The story isn't as intense as the previous two animated movies, nor as character focused, but tries not to fall too far into the juvenile side.

The Characters, you either Love em or hate em. There children are typical kid hero character stereotypes. The irritating youngest brat(Pym), the hot headed slacker turned leader(James), the feisty girl with daddy issues(Toruun), the token African American for political correctness(Azari) and the cold aloof flirty one(Barton). Aside from the clichés their individual story arcs play out very believably. The inner turmoil faced by the heroes alludes to many common problems face by average teenagers nowadays, such as living up to one's parents' expectations and finding a sense of self-identity. These are very Heart warming themes that can appeal to young and old alike. Some of the dialogue may be a little too "saturday morning cartoon" for the older teenagers like myself but those are few and far between.

It is in the animation department where this otherwise great film suffers. The animation is very inconsistent here. The art varies from an intricate level of detail with heavy shadows to flat and cheap looking crap with no other detail other than the basic outlines and features. A number of animation short cuts are jarringly visible and the fluidity of the animation usually varies indirectly to the art detail. This leads the overall animation of the movie to have a budgeted look; more fitting for a TV series than a movie. The character designs had a strong American anime feel to them. Not as exaggerated as Teen Titans but more on par with Ben 10.

On a whole, Next Avengers was an enjoyable movie with themes that are easy to relate to and can be watched by an audience of any age above 7. If it were not for the sub standard animation(compared to other animated movies), I would have given this a higher rating. This was a decent direct to DVD show and i look forward to the next. NEXT PLEASE Marvel!!!

A Marvel movie that's marvelous for kids, but a bit tame for the rest.
blongca046 July 2012
Marvel Animation has been a consistent contributor to the greater Marvel multiverse for years, creating diverse and impressive reimaginings of canon favorites, and adding entertaining, new characters to the already eclectic mix. "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow" does a spectacular job of making its young protagonists feel like natural fits in the already established mythos surrounding them, while also keeping everything family- friendly and fairly lighthearted - in fact, this is Marvel's first PG- rated animated film, and it definitely has a certain cutesy, Saturday morning cartoon appeal.

Pretty lame
DarthBill4 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
An alternate future had the Avengers settling down & starting families, and then getting killed by Ultron, all except Tony Stark/Iron Man, who goes on to be the protector/guardian/foster parent of the kids, Thor, who takes over as King of Asgard, though why Thor would let his daughter get raised by someone else, even a long time friend/ally like Iron Man, isn't really clear (as if Superman being a slacker deadbeat dad in "Superman Returns" wasn't bad enough). The Hulk/Bruce Banner also survives into this future. Years later, the tween versions of the Avenger offspring: James Rogers (son of Captain America & Black Widow), Torunn (daughter of Thor & Sif), Henry Pym Jr. (son of Giant Man & Wasp), Azari (son of Black Panther & Storm) and Francis Barton (son of Hawkeye/Clint Barton, who actually did not grow up with the other kids), are forced to fight Ultron & save humanity from him, even if it means recruiting the Hulk to get the job done.

The recent market of direct to DVD animated superhero features has been pretty hit & miss so far, both for Marvel & DC. "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow" is doomed to be remembered as one of the misses, largely because the kids themselves just aren't compelling enough to capture the imagination of the audience the way their parents did, with the possible exceptions of Azari and Torunn. Most of the films best moments don't even come from the young heroes, but from the old guard, specifically Iron Man/Tony Stark, who was forced to give up his playboy ways for surrogate parenthood.

Overall, stick with Ultimate Avengers 1 (the less said about Ultimate Avengers 2, the better).

Next Avengers Heroes of Tomorrow: A hugely pleasant surprise
Platypuschow15 December 2017
When I go into these Marvel animated outings I expect play by numbers stuff, whether it be a dark or kiddie friendly one they rarely surpise but manage to entertain to some degree.

With this one I went in with even lower expectations than usual. The children of the Avengers? Sounded like a blatant cashgrab and the plot seemed to confirm that further.

However from the opening sequence, it's writing and perfect score I realised I was mistaken and this was going to be something quite special.

Telling the story of a world where Ultron defeated the Avengers and killed most of them, Tony Stark has hidden away their offspring keeping them safe and off the grid. But of course things go wrong and they find themselves forced to embrace their destiny.

The whole thing looks beautiful and almost feels like a AAA movie, the score is outstanding and the movie is a kid friendly riot of fun.

Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow exceeded all my expectations and showed that these things can rise above mediocrity. Really good stuff.

The Good:

Great opening

Very well constructed

Excellent score

Some good ideas

The Bad:

Some really dumb ideas

Few unanswered questions

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Fred Tatasciore is more Hulk than Mark Ruffalo, seriously he's in every one of these things

Horrible Movie
ant_ko22 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, this film was plain horrible. Well, maybe some younger kids could watch this, but no one over the age of ten could watch this film without the urge to scoop their eyes out.

The storyline isn't THAT bad, but it is rather cliché, and too predictable.

BUT, you can't help but HATE Torrun (sp?) and Pym... they're just so annoying. there are constant objections from them trying too hard to teach children about some random qualities which are just lame. About every five minutes, you hear "no we can't!! we have to go back!!! we have to help him!! come on we have to fight them!!" In essence, save yourself from watchign this film... I watched it out of pure boredom.. i would much rather have sat in silenced for one and a half hours than watch this again :]

very strong animated feature from Marvel (8.5/10)
disdressed1223 November 2008
this is one of the latest Marvel animated features, and i gotta say,i liked it.this one involves the children of the Original Avengers, most of which do not appear in the story.i won't say why.you'll have to watch to find out.anyway,i found the premise of the future an interesting concept.but there is more to the story than just the children.i mentioned earlier that mos of the original Avengers do not appear, but one or two do show up to lend a hand.i liked the fact that in this feature, the threat to humanity is very grave, with a very strong and powerful villain.there's some great character interaction here,as well, including some conflict among the heroes.and for action fans, there are some great action scenes, including some great hand to had combat fighting.beyond that,i really like the colour scheme of the movie.,and i thought the voice castling was very good, especially, the voice of the villain.it was truly an inspired choice.my vote for The Next Avengers:8.5/10

Not bad.
13Funbags11 July 2018
If you can overlook the fact that every Avenger that had a kid has died or that Thor's daughter talks like him even though she wouldn't have had any way of knowing how he talked, this movie isn't bad. It was better than I was expecting considering it's about children.

You have to really have an imagination for this one.
Aaron137529 December 2009
This movie was just not all that good. All the Avengers out there and all the possible stories and they have to make a movie about children the Avengers never had because the Avengers themselves were apparently killed by the villain robot Ultron, a villain that Spider-man has taken on without being wiped out before. Here though he apparently kills the powerful superhero group minus Thor. They still should have been able to kill Ultron, if it were like the comics Wonderman and Hercules were also members of the group and both are powerful to take on Ultron. Also, Pym is the one who invented Ultron not Robert Stark, and you also have to believe somehow Stark made a robot more powerful than his own armor, not to wise on his part. This movie had its good parts, I enjoyed the fight between Ultron and Ironman even though it was rather short. I also enjoyed it when the Hulk and Ultron fought, so as you can see I did not really care for the next Avengers all that much as they were annoying kids that never should have been conceived. However, its pacing is rather good and it is nice to see the Hulk get all ticked off, though in the actual Marvel universe that fight would have not lasted all that long as the Hulk is much stronger than Ultron ever thought of being. Like I said Spider-man fought him to a standstill.

Another Quality Marvel Studio production
theycallmemrglass8 October 2008
All of Marvel Studios animated films in the last 3 years starting with The Invincible Iron Man, Dr Strange, and Avengers 1& 2 were first rate comic book animated films that truly delivered the character drive and action that comic book fans have lusted for decades. They now follow up with a suspiciously kiddish animated movie set in an alternative future where the avengers have been long wiped out by Ultron apart from Tony Stark who takes the children of the Avengers into hiding to raise them away from harm. This is definitely a more kid friendly entry but don't let that put any of you off. The children behave like normal children with powers (did that make sense?), are likable, very vulnerable and needing adult guidance. The story is entertaining if rather straightforward with a couple of interesting revelations and welcome cameos. The voice acting for the children Avengers are charming (much akin to those in The Incredibles) with production levels on par with Marvel's previous films. This is not the best of the Marvel series but it is certainly a great deal of fun for both children and adults.

Sevicable enough for kids. Adults, not so much
movieman_kev6 October 2008
In an alternative future, where the Avengers grew complacent and softened considerably opting to give up heroics for family life raising their respective children. Ultron kills them off one by one (save for Tony stark, who keeps vigil over the offspring of the Avengers, Thor, who's retreated back to Asgard, and Bruce Banner). Now Ultron has found out about the teen kids and it's up to them to save the day.

Perhaps I'm not really the true demographic of this movie, comic loving tykes might get a lot more entertainment out of the kid-friendly silly little shenanigans then this late twenty-something did. I will say that the movie is much much better than the simply atrocious but similarly themed "Avengers United"

My Grade: C

DVD Extras: A 10 and a half minute Making of featurette; 'Kid Power: Next gen Marvel" (a 9 and a half minute featurette on Marvel's kid/ teen oriented comics); First looks for both "Hulk vs. Wolverine" & "Hulk Vs. Thor"; and trailers for "Ultimate Avengers", "Ultimate Avengers 2", "the Invincible Iron Man", "Speed Racer: the Next Generation", "the Forbidden Kingdon", "Hulk Vs Thor", "Hulk Vs Wolverine", "Spectacular Spider-man", "Teenage mutant ninja turtles" Volume 6, & "Doctor Strange"

Marvel's best animated movie yet! Did I just say that?
grifter7820 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe I'm saying this but this is the best animated movie Marvel has done so far! And believe me, when I first saw the trailer and read the premise I did not like it. I think what scared me about this one is that after several offerings from Marvel animated movies (some OK, some decent, and some great), suddenly we're getting what seemed like a "kid-friendly" movie which to me completely went against the point of doing these direct-to-DVD movies. Kid friendly Marvel stuff should be left for regular T.V. Well I'm happy to say I was wrong about this one. I think the fact that it's an original story is where its strength lies. First off, the setup for the story is well executed. Ultron defeats all the original Avengers and Tony Stark escapes with their offspring. Another strength is the characters. James Rodgers, the son of Captain America and Black Widow, is first portrayed as a slacker so it's cool to see his father come out in him as things progress. Torunn is the daughter of Thor and I think she may be my favorite character. Plus she has my favorite seen in the movie where she prays to her dad and the way he 'answers' her is awesome! Azari is the son of Black Panther and Storm (not a spoiler, they're now married in the comics). He's kind of the level headed one and it's cool to see the powers of his parents combined in him. Pym, the son of Wasp and Giant Man, was the only one I really didn't like because he's basically the annoying one of the bunch. And Francis Barton is the son of Hawkeye and he's pretty much identical to his dad. They really portray Ultron as a real threat here and they make me believe that he could actually defeat all the Avengers. We also get some action from an aged Hulk and it's great to see him let loose. I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel includes these characters into their comic continuity somehow because they've got some really great material here. Highly recommend checking this out.

The avenger have kids???
WeAreLive12 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie about two years ago and to be honest I just didn't find it that interesting compared to other Marvel animated films I have seen over the years.

I just find it weird that the Avengers have stopped being heroes, settled down and had kids but ended up being wiped out by Ultron. To be honest this whole movie felt like Marvel fan fiction.

One of Marvels best
ThunderKing618 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Marvel animation was good. Then after mcu made its rounds, it turned terrible.

NAHOT was a 1 of a kind type film.

The characters were perfect and the story for an hour film was pretty good too.

Ultron plays the baddie who off screen defeats all the avengers and takes over the world.

The children avengers are being protected by old man stark on an island. the children get tired of being grounded and wander off to save the day.

The animation was 100x better than 2020s animation. Its vibrant and colorful.

Next Avengers was a fun movie for the kids and family.

Thor makes a cameo. Thor easily could have saved midgard but choose to hang out in Asgard abandoning his daughter on earth. Out of Character for Thor since Thor loves Midgard.

Verdict: "Dad says hi."

Great for an animated movie
gamerboy-673703 May 2019
So I watched this film last night and I did not think it would be that good, but it was great. I always have low expectations for animated films because animated films usually have low budgets. But I only have 2 problems with this film, the first problem Thor's daughter should now not talk like Thor because she should have no Idea how Thor talks. The second problem is when this came out only comic book fans knew who the Avengers are, moviegoers would not know about the avengers until 2012.
