In 1879 Germany forms an alliance with the Austro-Hungarian empire and together were associated with Tsarist Russia under the League of the Three Emperors, a private understanding among the three heads of State. Vicky and Fritz are still excluded from State affairs but their son Wilhelm has fallen under the wing of Bismark and shares his views. Fritz is upset when he learns that Bismark has given Wilhelm access to the Ministries and State papers, something he has never been allowed to do. Fritz develops a malignant throat malady and in 1888, the elderly King died. Fritz however could not attend due to his own illness. Although king, Fritz is unable perform any duties and Bismark rebuffs Vicky when she suggests that matters of State be referred to her. On Fritz's death Wilhelm II ascends to the throne but finds Bismark's methods too restrictive.
