- In Canada, between the charming city of Quebec and the crazy Quebeckers, Sophie Jovillard heads as far as the majestic forests of Mauricie. Lying north of the Saint-Laurence River, this little-known region offers over 5,000 kilometers of tracks, trails and footpaths that wend their way between frozen lakes and woods.
- Beginning of the journey in Québec city: Sophie meets Arnaud Marchand, a chef and then they begin to walk through the old town (Unesco World Heritage site): they reach a terrace and enjoy the sight over the Saint-Laurent River and the Chateau Frontenac. Then they travel to the Lac Beauport and arrive at the restaurant: Richard , Arnaud's associate shows Sophie how he prepares the maple syrup. In the restaurant Arnaud prepares a "tarte à l'argousier", the sea-buck thorn, a fruit with a good flavor. Then arrive Sophie, Arnaud's wife and the children and they have supper with pork meat , sea-buck thorn tart and as dessert the "suçons au sirop d'érable".On the next day Arnaud and Sophie are in the port of Québec and they join an ice-canoeing team (the canoes were the only transport for crossing the Saint-Laurent-River in the river), Sophie and Arnaud participate in the training of team.At night Sophie is with Arnaud 's family in the "Centre Vidéotron" and they enjoy an ice hockey match. After that Sophie travels to Saint-Etienne des Grès where she meets Alain Priem; in the summer Alain drives seaplanes and in the winter the same seaplanes but on skis: they have a beautiful flight over the the forests, the frozen lakes and the Saint-Laurent River: they land in the "Mauricie" area and Sophie joins the village of Saint-Paulin: she is received by Patricia Brouard at the "Auberge Damphousse" who shows her a cozy room for the night. On the morning Sophie meets Mr. Brouard who tells her the story of this place (about 1.200 inhabitants were working in the wood industry for export to England and now there are only 70 inhabitants who live mainly from tourism).Sophie meets Frédéric Manseau , a musher and they have a dog-sled tour in the forest (Frédéric manages about 142 dogs ): they arrive at a place and Sophie meets then Emmanuel Proulx, a mycologist who shows her the chaga fungus (Inonotus obliquus, a parasitic fungus on birch and others trees).Later Sophie meets again Alain Priem , they travel by snow scooters to a frozen lake where they meet Steve Blanchette , a fisherman who explains them how to fish in a frozen lake (pikes and zanders).Later Marine Priem,Alain's daughter arrive with a dog sled and all spend a warm moment in the cabin of Steve. On the next day Sophie meets Laurence Plante-Garceau and they have a horseback riding in the snowy forest. In the night Sophie is with all the friends (Patricia, Frédéric, Emmanuel (who shows her dried chaga fungus) and Laurence for a supper. Besides we see zooms about the Saint-Laurent River in the winter (the ferry, the Coast guards, the snowkite), about the snow tubing in the mountains, about the climbing of a frozen waterfall, about the famous poutine, about the carnival in Québec (the ice sculptures, the ice canoeing, the great parade), about the trapper David Robillard, the furs trade and the fashion designer Mariouche Gagne, about the snow scooters (or snow mobiles) and about the "Isle aux Grues".—zutterjp48
