Our dogs do not judge us, however, we still feel the need to judge them. Hence, the birth of dog shows. Whoever's pooch is to perfection wins a silly prize, which is alright for the dog who I doubt cares either way, but what's really amusing is just how seriously people take these forms of competition. George Jetson is about to meet a couple of these people and will have to make a very difficult choice. Everything is riding on this one. Everything. So during another typical day at work, Spacely calls for George to join him in the executive dining room. He quickly gets his hopes up, anticipating a raise or vice presidency, but instead, Spacely had a different position in mind for him: judge for the Spacely Sprockets annual dog show. He mentions the missus will be entering her dog Fifi in the contest, and he's confident George will choose her as the winner. It was that or he'd be fired. Spacely was also nice enough to let George cover their check, however there was worse to come. En route home, George was accosted by two mobsters who took him to their boss, Mangler Mars. Nice subtle name. Mangler somehow heard of George being appointed judge of the dog show and he really wanted his mutt Starbite to win. Either that or they would kill George. Wow, to think a space mobster has nothing better to do with his time. Oh, and Astro will be in the show too. If he doesn't win, his family will lose whatever respect they still have for him. Tough call, huh? Well, helpful little Orbitty suggests George resign his position as judge. He tried, but unfortunately, the decision was final. So George would have to make a choice between his job, his family and his life. Which was more important?
After recovering from a game of golf, in which he incurred the wrath of both Mangler and Spacely, George goes home to relax, where he's forced to endure Astro's hammy tricks. After that, Elroy and Astro go to the gymnasium where the dog gets tossed about by the robot exercise machines. He really wants to win that dog show. Hopefully George will choose him, but that night he had a nightmare where he was being chased around Venus by Spacely, Mangler and then Jane and Elroy, all chastising him. By show time, George was a nervous wreck. Starbite, Fifi, Astro and all the dogs were there. Spacely makes sure to "influence" the judge, while Mangler devises a plan to get rid of all the other dogs so Starbite will win. He does so by deploying a robot cat, which drives all the other hounds insane as they all chase after it, even Astro who was thankfully stopped in time by Orbitty. However this turn of events didn't make George's impending choice any simpler. He was still left with having to choose the three dogs each representing an aspect of his existence. Well, what happened next you might say proves without the shadow of a doubt that George has a guardian angel, for just at that moment, the space fuzz arrive and arrest Mangler Mars for dog-napping (Starbite ain't his), then Spacely and his wife have to leave with Fifi, who as it turns out is going to have puppies. That only leaves the rightful winner, Astro. He wins the gold cup, and as for the year supply of Doggie Woggie Delightful Dinners goes to a starving young pup who wandered in, so it thankfully all worked out. And not a moment too soon.
While I didn't like this episode that much, I thought the ending was really good, since all parties got exactly what they deserved: Mangler Mars got time in the big house, Spacely is stuck with 15 puppies, Astro won the dog show and his new little friend won a year supply of dog food. Now I have to stress again just how seriously everybody took this contest. Mangler Mars actually went out of his way to steal a dog just so it could be entered? Instead of pulling bank jobs or robbing jewelry stores, he cared more about a golden cup and a year supply of pup chow? He needs a hobby. I guess they added the Mangler subplot so it wouldn't be a typical "George must choose between his family and his job" plot, which as we know, they already made a hundred of. Nice to see how worked up everybody got over this, glad to know some folks in the galaxy have nothing better to do, and judging a dog show can mean the difference between life and death. That's insane. My recommendation: might wanna skip this one.
