This marks the fifth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

It’s tempting to draw a straight line between the Academy’s increasingly global composition and the unprecedented triumph of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” in 2019. And if we regard the Academy’s changing attitude less as a driver and more as a symptom of a more general broadening of cultural horizons, the correlation is more than pure coincidence.
But the real story of international talent making waves at the Oscars is more complex, differing from category to category and complicated by varied international release strategies. With respect to the role international festivals can play in this process, “Parasite’s” win at Cannes gave it an enviable profile boost in 2019, but even that was a little anomalous: in recent years Venice has eclipsed Cannes and U.S. festivals as a launchpad for Oscar players.

“Josee, the Tiger and the Fish,” a new anime film based on the 1987 short story of the same name, tells the tale of a young woman named Josee, who uses a wheelchair and develops a relationship with her caretaker, Tsuneo. Kotaro Tamura directs this adaptation of the story, which comes after multiple film adaptations in recent years. So what did Tamura want to do differently with this film? “A lot of the other adaptations and movies tend to end the film in a sadder ending, with a darker tone, with a more realistic view of what it means to have a disability or handicap,” says Tamura in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “We wanted to have a very uplifting and positive message.” Watch the video interview above.
As Tamura suggests, there is a stereotype with films centering on disabled characters to make the conflict about their hardships. The...

Remaking highly regarded works is often a difficult, and occasionally a thankless task. It requires a level of staying true to the material it is based on, but nonetheless an original spin, and a narrative which takes the audience to a place it has not been to before. In that regard, “Josee”, the remake of the 2003 Japanese film “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish”, both of which are based on the award-winning short story of the same name, works to a degree, but in a similar fashion to a large portion of remodelled movies, fails to lack the ultimate punch that its predecessor so succinctly offered.

At the heart of the story are two characters of a similar age, but yet two people with completely contrary lives and perspectives. Firstly, there is Young-seok (Nam Joo-hyuk), a confident college student who takes things as they come,...

Heading into its 60th anniversary, France’s Annecy Festival long ago established itself as one of the world’s most important animation events, but this year it holds the added distinction of being one of the first major international festivals in Europe to return to an at least part in-person format. Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 5,000 attendees Annecy CEO Mickaël Marin explained on Thursday evening, as Annecy announced its 2021 program.
Included in the evening’s announcements were masterclasses, keynote speeches, sneak peeks and its highly anticipated feature film lineups, boasting a strong mix of previous award-winning films and several box office hits, as well as a number of French, European and world premieres. This year’s online offering will look and function much like last years, although Marin is confident that the very few bugs from the first time around will be ironed out this year. Online...

Based on the 1984 short story by Japanese author Seiko Tanabe, Isshin Inudo’s “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish” was released in 2003. The story has experienced a bit of a revival of late, what with a South Korean adaptation from Kim Jong-kwan and an anime version from director Kotaro Tamura both being released in 2020. What better time then to re-visit the original adaptation and see how it fares almost two decades on?

Stars, directors and other local film folk turned out in impressive numbers on Saturday afternoon for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo International Film Festival. The glitzy red carpet was replaced with a series of more static photo ops on a stage in central Tokyo, with plexiglass partitions keeping the talent separated.
The festival has had to re-write most of its activities this year due to the impact of the coronavirus – the selection has shrunk to just 32 features in the new Tokyo Premiere section, which has replaced the competition and two other sections.
Also, the only Tokyo Premiere prize to be given is an audience award – but the simple fact that the festival is still going ahead in physical form is typical of a Japanese doggedness and determination to push on through adversity to get things done.
Even the opening film, a boxing picture by Take Masaharu, spoke to that theme.
